“Something special”
Reviewed March 29, 2011

We checked in early evening into a very laid back reception area with the sound of the ocean echoing through the open plan design. This took less than 5 minutes before we were into our upgraded ocean view room. The trip to our room was through the bar area which was fairly full of happy hour guests.

Our room was big enough, with 2 queen sized beds, a flat screen tv, a kitchen area and a patio next to both ocean and bar. The room was always clean and the maid service was around 1 pm each day. Everything worked great, with the exception of the hot water in the shower. This was warm enough to shower only after it had been running for 5+ minutes only, sometimes longer. We asked maintenance to have a look at it, he did and told us nicely that we were impatient, the hot water had to come from the roof.

There was a complementray bottle of Mount Gay Rum in the room and a couple of cokes, he suggested we had a drink whilst the water warmed up. Obviously this became our daily routine at shower time.

The afternoon tea is a nice touch and Happy Hour was a pleasant way to enjoy the sunset each evening. The beach is awesome, - large and empty with more than enough sunbeds. The comparison with the beach of the Escape Hotel next door was clear, they appeared to have many times more guests in much less space and the sunbeds were next to each other in uniform rows. At the Southern Palms, you just drag your sunbed to the exact spot on the beach you want (or you can ask one of the staff to drag it for you!).

The hotel is situated on a one way road with not much traffic on it. A five minute walk either way will take you past several bars and restaurants. If you take room only, you have considerable choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner just across the road.

The area feels very safe and extremely friendly, 90% of the locals greet you as you wander around each day.

if you ever have the priveledge to stay at this hotel which has amaxing views over the ocean at dover beach, make sure you keep an eye out for the turtles, lazy days on a quiet stretch of beach...and on thursday night indulge in the bbq, fantastic value! soup then mixed salads, then steak, catch of the day and chicken with mixed veg, plantain rice and potatoes etc, then a variety of desserts followed by coffee or tea,all accompanied by the lovely strains of the barbados steel drum band.....a true taste of the carribean, well worth a visit..or two!!! tracey and maxine from uk .

We stayed 7 nights at this hotel last week, just returned yesterday,
Wew have been to Barbados at lest 18 times and this is the most over priced hotel we have stayed in, it was a big disappointment.
The rooms are very basic and dated, the beds are a double and a single, we had an ocean view room, couldn't fault the view, we asked if there were any queen beds and we were told they were on the first floor, we were on the second floor, the room available was directly below ours but the view was obstructed by a big hedge, so having paid the extra for an ocean view we decided to stay where we were.
The floor in our room was not cleaned for our entire stay, our feet were filthy.
Ther is only a kettle, two cups and two spoons, I really think a toaster woud be a welcome addition,
The restaurant food wasn't bad, but the service very slow, not many people ate there for this reason, we saw many people leave after waiting far to long.
We paid for wireless internet in our room $25 per week, it did not work unless you were hanging over the balcony, we complained but to no avail.
We have stayed in some top hotels that did not cost this much per night, Barbados in general is out pricing its self, there is a wide choice of places to vacation these days and people look for value for money and The Southern Palms is not, Bougainvilla is a far more superior hotel for the money and we will stay ther again next time

My partner and I were looking for somewhere with a great beach, nice rooms, and in a good location - we found all this and more at Southern Palms.

From the moment we arrived and walked in to the pink reception area, through which you glimpse the ridiculously stunning beach we knew we had made the right decision. The rooms are simple but colourful, well equipped, spacious, and very clean. We had a fridge and small kitchen area which was really helpful just to keep water and fruit etc in the room. The balconies are large and I think most, if not all, rooms look out over the sea in some way. We hadnt booked an ocean view but our balcony looked straight out at the beach.

Dover Beach has to be one of the best things about the resort, we didnt see a nicer beach during our stay, even on the west coast. The water was clear, warm, full of turtles, the sand was golden, I know it all sounds like a cliche but it was just perfect.

The Gap is great for restaurants and bars, we had some lovely street food there too, and it's brilliant that it's all on your doorstep, whilst the resort is self contained and quiet enough to feel like a real retreat from the hustle and bustle.

The hotel bar is also brilliant, it's right on the beach and the happy hour rum punches are a great way to mark the shift from day to night before heading out for dinner or drinks. We also had lunch there a few times and really enjoyed the food, we still crave flying fish sandwiches...
Oistins has to be done and was a great night out, Bridgetown is good for shopping and a couple of touristy things like the Mount Gay rum tour which I'd really recommend, and jumping on a reggae bus up to the west coast is well worth it too.

That said the hotel, the staff, the views, the service, the food and drink, and the whole experience is so good I think I'd be happy just staying there for a week doing very little at all. It's a brilliant base from which you could have any kind of holiday you wanted.

I can't recommend the Southern Palms enough and just can't wait to get back there.
