Reviewed July 16, 2014

Stayed at the Savannah Beach for two weeks all inclusive holiday booked through Virgin Atlantic holidays.

Welcome
Arrived after a long flight from Manchester. Check-in was simple and straight forward. However, the queue was quite lengthy and took some time. The receptionist was quite intent on ensuring a security deposit was gathered and informing us of additional charges if we lose the room key. A nice touch was the porter getting rum punches for those waiting.

Accommodation
The room was very nicely prepared for arrival and the luggage took no time in being delivered.
Staying for 2 weeks we found the maid service to be first class and the towels were changed every other day as promised. The TV service was of poor quality and we lost the satellite service for a few days at a time.
The bathroom was a bit tired and some of the bath tiles were cracked.

Restaurants

Drifters
Very nice to have your lunch and dinner here on a daily basis when open. Entertainment was featured here most evenings which was very enjoyable with some acts exceptional. As you can guess the music was mainly calypso and reggae. No karaoke or bingo included!

The cocktail list was extensive and over the two weeks there was plenty opportunity to sample them all.

Rachael’s
Ate breakfast here every day and dinner on a few occasions.
The breakfast was really good and could be as light or as heavy as you want it. The made to order omelets was a nice touch.
Dinner was good particularly on a Sunday with roast beef.
We were told more formal dress was required ie trousers and shirt, but dress shorts were acceptable.

Chopstix
We ate in this noodle bar on three occasions as the food was very fresh and tasty. This restaurant is not open every night and is limited to 24 covers. Highly recommended.

Beach Area
The hotel opens out right on to the beach which is really handy. There is a general beach and a hotel club section which you have to pay extra for which saves you walking to the bar to get a drink and has posher loungers.

While on the beach there was a fight on the beach between two jewelry vendors which was a bit scary particularly for the younger kids.

The beach area was cleaned and raked every day.

Night time was fascinating on the beach as this beach is one of the best beaches for turtles to nest on. We saw this with four different occasions.

Staff

The majority of bar staff were helpful and friendly but some were a bit sullen at times and didn’t seem to smile. On the first night after the long flight etc. my wife asked for “two local beers” to which the tall maître d’ stated “we only serve local beers” and stomped off without explaining it was a help yourself buffet etc.

Sometimes it took a while to get served at the bar as only one person was on the bar at a time.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in this hotel which was small enough to get to know other holiday makers but also had enough different areas to be if you wanted to be on your own.

We will go back to The Savannah Beach Hotel! The people that work there are the friendliest and most helpful of any place we have ever been! They recommended and booked excursions for us and helped us rent a car. Our luggage did not arrive on the airplane until the day after we arrived and the people at the Savannah called the airline for us and took care of everything. We asked about the Rasta bus and they gave us advice as to riding it to Oistens for the Friday night festivities. We had a wonderful time and the Savannah Beach was a big part of our perfect vacation. The rooms were a good size- not too big and not too small. We had a nice balcony that we sat on to drink coffee in the morning. We enjoyed dressing nicely for dinner and sitting at the bar visiting with other guests and listening to good live entertainment. Many of the people we met have been visiting the Savannah Beach for several years. I think that speaks well for the hotel. I highly recommend the Savannah Beach Hotel!

Just returned from a fantastic holiday at the Savannah. Made to feel very welcome and special. The staff and management are like one big happy family and do all they can to make your holiday wonderful. Food is fantastic especially in Rachael's where a la carte dining is offered 5 evenings a week with waitress service, much better than the buffet. Lunchtime food in Drifters excellent first week but they changed it during our last week and it was just pizza/burgers/pasta very repetitive - the buffet / barbecue were much better at lunchtime. We had a fantastic room over looking the beach. Upgraded to the Club which was very worthwhile - looked after very well on the private decking by Jackie / Michael and Martin. Hope to return.

My wife, two grown up children and I visited the Savannah Beach first week in July and we couldn't have chosen a friendlier hotel. Not too big, with a very friendly team, from the warm Bajan welcome at the front desk, to the almost family feel of the restaurant staff - nothing was too much trouble. We had a beach facing room with terrace, which was well shaded, so in the heat of the day offered a relief from the sun. Rooms very clean and spacious and plenty of clean towels. Food good and cocktails always a highlight of the evening. Only downside is beach. A bit rocky, but a short walk in either direction brings you to more sandy stretches. Great free wifi everywhere on the property - yeah!!!

Room Tip: We had ground floor room facing beach on opposite side from pool, which is quieter than those by the...

We really looked forward to our stay at the Savannah after reading reviews on Trip advisor but our experience turned out to be different from most of those here.

Location:
The hotel is small with nice grounds and situated on the beach and is approx 20-30 minutes from the airport, not much within walking distance but you can walk to the race course and to Carlisle Bay which has a fantastic beach (don’t pay to swim with turtles, just watch where the boats go and then
swim out with your own snorkelling gear. Easy to get around on public transport and a very entertaining experience especially the Reggae buses and ZR vans, both of which you can find some interesting characters and appeared safe (be warned some of the reggae buses and ZR vans actually pump out gospel music). You can walk in either direction along the beach, we preferred to head left to and along the Board-walk. The main pool is quite small with enough room for only 20 sun beds and only two umbrellas, a meandering pool runs up the court yard, service at the pool bar is poor, you need to ring a bell and eventually someone will pop their head over from the main bar and will unenthusiastically take you order.

Rooms:
We stayed in a court yard view room which was nice however the bathroom was dated. Towel change is on certain days but you don’t have to wait more than two days. Cleaning of rooms was ok but some floor stains were not cleaned the whole time we were there, balcony is a good size, TV had rubbish reception (but who cares), the room safe is a little different in the way it operates and is not the largest but it does the job.

Beach:
The hotel is on a beach, although for 12 of the 14 days we were there the beach was covered in seaweed (photo). The hotel said it was the first time they had had seaweed that bad but a local told us it has been like that for the last 5 years? We felt that the hotel did not do enough to get rid of the seaweed and should have offered more trips to Copacabana beach. Once the seaweed was cleared very few people ventured into the stony waters expect when nature called. The beach is not that big and was well shaded by trees, you have to keep moving the sun bed to follow the sun as it passes through the trees.

Food & drink:
Not the greatest, we were here for 14 nights and thought the food was only average quality, limited and repetitive.
The biggest gripe for us was the use of plastic plates and glasses at evening meal and the bar (Drifters) yes the restaurant is the beach/pool bar during the day and we have no problems with plastic around the pool and beach, but both the pool and beach is not used at night, we don’t expect to spend that sort of money to eat evening meals on plastic plates and drink out of plastic glasses all night (hot drinks included). Rachels restaurant is a la carte with a limited menu and average food but well presented, you have to eat here on Wednesdays and Sundays as Drifters is closed. We don’t eat noodles so can’t comment on Chopsticks but heard mixed reviews.
At approx 4.30pm they put out cake & sandwiches at Drifters which comprises of 2 plates of cake and 2 plates of sandwiches, sandwich filling include cheese spread, ham spread, tuna and a chicken spread, not very imaginative!

Hygiene:
Being open air, Drifters attracts quite a few birds which results in birds eating your food if you’re not at the table, they also eat off the serving spoons and serving dishes where they can. Staff routinely had to clean bird muck off the chairs in between meals. Tap water is safe to drink in Barbados and all water served at Drifters comes from the grotty little sink in the corner of the bar, even the water jugs at meal time are filled here (not a good customer experience). As mentioned above, all drinks are served in plastic glasses/cups and there appears to be a limited amount of these glasses, quite often when ordering drinks the barman would get a dirty glass run it under the grotty cold water tap and run his hand around the inside and then shake it before serving your drink (not a good customer experience). The gent’s toilet at Drifters has no running hot water. Even with these observations we never saw or heard of anyone being ill.

Staff:
Mixed reviews here, some staff were professional, polite and talkative but there was a couple of staff that had attitude, especially one of the barmen at Drifters.

Service:
Reception – good
Room cleaning – ok
Rachels – ok
Drifters restaurant – varied depending on staff on duty
Drifters bar – ok

We so wanted our first trip to Barbados and this hotel to be great but we left a little left down, however it really wouldn’t take much to put things right here.
