“Quiet and at the foot of the forests of the Kaimai Ranges”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

The cabin was quaint and small. It was hot to start but we acclimatised quickly. The park is a short drive south of the town. There is a kitchen where you can cook meals, and the cabin we stayed in had a small fridge with a small freezer, bunks and a queen bed. There was a tv set on a set of drawers, inside the drawers there were cooking and eating implements. I bought my own cooking and eating implements though. The floor was floorboards. There is free wifi but vouchers expire and we didn't like to continue to ask for more vouchers. Access to the wifi was slow without the vouchers, but we made do with the NZ sim. Toilets and showers were clean and never a wait for them, and most of the time the water was hot, once the water was cold but that was fixed quickly. As the park is out of town we experienced a couple of water outages, I believe the park relies on a tank, that issue was rectified quickly too. The washing machines were good, and there was a dryer and a clothes line. There was a piano and pool room, and kids can use an adventure playground which has swings, and a trampoline. The gardens are well kept, but walk around in shoes or thongs because there are many acorns on the ground. The oak trees are tall and magnificent. The staff are friendly and always willing to help. There are a number of long term campers who were also more than willing to offer assistance if needed. We did not try the hot pools unfortunately, but we did go to a hot pool at Tokaanu which is a bit more than a two hour drive south of Te Aroha. In the township of Te Aroha there is a hot pool facility also. There is a Countdown supermarket in town. We also did a walk to Wairere Falls which looks like a forest something out of Lord of the Rings, and driving past Paeroa towards the beach there is an amazing drive through a gorge. Waihi Beach is well worth a look at and less than a one hour drive from the park.

Room Tip: If you want access to a private kitchenette and shower you will need to spend a bit more than we did...

We were looking for a last minute B&B for a pre Waitangi Day break away and found this little gem 2 kms south of town. Poppy Cottage in Te Aroha Park was perfect.. a small but perfectly formed converted cabin, with a comfy bed, excellent shower, kitchen facilities and even a little dressing room and outside deck.
The little touches of a vase of pretty blue hydrangers and all the windows open on our arrival made us feel very welcome. Anna and her family were helpful and suggested eateries and activities.
There was no sign of any bugs or spiders in the rooms and the bedding smelt fresh and sweetly of sun-dried and aired linen.
We were planning on spending about $140 for a B&B in town, but at a special of $61 we felt we'd hit the jackpot. Even at the normal rate of $80/night, Poppy Cottage is a gem. The property was very quiet.
There was a spa very close to our unit for our use @$15 for 1/2 an hour, but we didn't use it.. maybe next time!

We loved staying at the Te Aroha Holiday Park in our camper in a delightful site under the trees with a very lovely view of the bush clad hills. The toilets and showers were very very clean and tidy.We want to bring the grandchildren to visit as they would love the various adventure playground and swimming pools. We looked at one of the cabins and what a cutee, all that you would need and delightful polished floors. So very happy and look forward to our next visit.

We stayed one night in the cottage poppy cabin. The bed sheets and blanket were not clean and bugs and spiders in room. There are not screens on windows. It is hot and if you open windows to cool off more bugs come in. The pools are in need serious make over. We highly recommend the mineral hot spring in the town of Te Aroha but don't stay at the holiday park.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to read about your dissatisfaction while staying in Poppy Cottage. Insects can be a problem in this farming environment, especially during summer months and after rain. We have installed an automatic insect control dispenser in the Cottage now to ensure a relaxing stay. All our linnen is freshly laundered and sun dried, I have advised all cleaning staff to improve on final checks for stains from our natural spring water (which sometimes comes through the pipes with the water suppy) before refitting beds and am sorry if this had been missed in your case. Our swimming pools were build in the 60is. It is an old concrete pool, deep and a lot of fun for people to use during our hot summer months. The water is a bit cloudy as it contains iron , manganese and other minerals in their natural form. The little hot pool gets re-filled daily is available all year ( weather permitting) and the larger ( unheated) pool is available during summer months. We have recently water blasted all concrete surfaces, so hopefully this helps in improving their appearance. Thank you again for your feedback, it always helps to refocus on continuing maintenance priorities.

Great site for very special mountain views.
Really like the feel of the place but think there hasnt been much attention to detail during room services and grounds maintence that really lets it down.

My suggested areas of attention below,
Reception should be uncluttered & dusted
Towels are not stained, plates not chipped
Investigate ways to make towels less stiff
Sweep verandah, replace teabags/coffee daily, Ensure sufficient plates cups cutlery
Freshen rooms with natural oils ie lavender or eucalyptus.

Pool- paint & seal pool areas
More shade or umbrellas

Grounds-Remove dead leaves & branches
Wipper snip around units, plant fruit trees

Rather than charge bbq- should sell frozen meat (profit) or homemade sweets from area?

We stayed only one night at Te Aroha Holiday Park at Cottage Poppy. We found it to be a cute quirky little cottage that suited our needs exactly. It was clean, plenty of towels, comfy bed, great shower. It was well equipped with kitchen amenties and also a good tv. Even a little vase of flowers which was a nice cheery welcome! We would certainly return to the camp.

Te Aroha is a wonderful town to visit so I wanted to show it off to some Japanese friends of mine. Decided to do it the kiwi way and stay in a tent so booked to stay at the holiday park (the only one in the town). We turned up a bit early but as we were staying in a tent I figured it would be ok (not like they needed to make the bed for us or anything).
When we provided the owner with our booking confirmation she told us that she didn't have any record of our booking. We had booked this several days before and had the confirmation email and number to prove it. So after that was settled we were told that if we wanted to check in now that would be an additional $20.
Deciding that we didn't want to pay the extra we went back to Te Aroha for an hour before returning to the holiday park. This time there was a helpful member of the staff who attended to us. Surprise surprise she found our booking with no worries and advised us on where we were allowed to set up the tent. As we were about to move the car to our selected site the owner comes across and says that we are not allowed to pitch the tent in our selected spot (beside two other tents) and we had to go to the otherwise of the park away from all the facilities!!!
I was so shocked at her treatment towards myself and my friends.
If you wish to stay in the area drive the 30 odd minutes to Matamata and stay there.
Avoid the Te Aroha holiday park like the plague and have an enjoyable holiday somewhere where you are not treated like something found on the bottom of a shoe.

Thank you for your feedback. Please accept my apologies, if upon your arrival, you found reception unacceptable. As you arrived very early, our guest arrival ' s list had not been prepared, but I am pleased to read that you were later satisfied with check in procedures. Our check in time is 2 pm, early check in (after 10 am) is possible, if we have your room ready or in the case of camping, if you don't mind waiting for communal facilities to be cleaned. In any case a surcharge applies and I am sorry that this was not made clear to you at the time of your booking. We have 2 separate types of camping sites, powered and unpowered sites. Your booking was for an unpowered site which is situated in a different area to the powered sites. Both tenting guests and campervan guests can use these sites. My apologies again, I should have explained to you that for a small surcharge of $ 3 you could have upgraded your existing unpowered site to the one you had chosen for that day. I can understand that you were dissapointed when you could not pitch your tent at the pitch you had in mind. I really hope you can come back some other time and give us another chance to please you and your friends in our usual way.
