Te Aroha Holiday Park and Backpackers
Reviewed January 18, 2012

We stayed at Te Aroha Holiday Park on a whim when having a short break away. It has lovely park-like grounds with huge trees and nice gardens. Our kids enjoyed the pool and when one of them lost their goggles the owners kindly mailed them back to us when they were found. Our accommodation was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed.
Only slight negatives would be, our shower unfortunately seemed to have a blockage and didn't work properly, (however it wasn't a major issue, we informed the owners and used the communal showers which were great), and we felt the pool could do with a clean.
However we thought the holiday park was lovely and down to earth and we are going to definitely stay again.

Room Tip: They seemed to have a variety of sizes available as well as camping spots.

Booked a motel unit online the morning of our stay looking forward to the whole mineral hotpool experience they advertise. When we arrived were disapointed to find large pool green and dirty with leaves and debris and hotpool not much better. Free wi-fi not available in unit, no milk supplied, bedlinen torn and towels threadbare. The whole place could use some tlc to tidy up gardens and units. Would not recommend.

Great place for families, and those who like peace and space. Lovely views of Mt Te Aroha, rural countryside with cows and horses over the fence. Our unit was spotless, quiet and comfortable. This is a great place to base yourself to do the activites in the area. If you want matching towels and crockery, this isn't the place for you. It is basic and beautiful and great value for money, would go back tomorrow!

I stayed in a lovely little cabin "Mercedes" at the back of the property - small TV, fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster and kitchen bits - I didn't even need to use the main kitchen but I didn't do any 'proper' cooking. The cabin had a little entrance room where the fridge and microwave lived (brilliant! - one of my biggest bugbears about hotel rooms is hearing the fridge all night).

For $38 a night (cabin booked through Wotif) this place is excellent value for money. It's also peaceful and relaxing. The owners are very friendly, helpful and work hard to keep the place shipshape. The property is very green with lots of trees and views of the mountains. The free hot pool was lovely. I would definitely stay again and recommend it.

The only drawback for me was you couldn't really walk into town.

This campground exposes the Qualmark rating system for the scam that it truly is. Apparently this is a 3 star rated accommodation, if this is truly the case then the criteria to obtain this level must be extremely low.
Upon arrival what I assume were the owners kids checked us in - this was fine but didn't exactly portray a professional image. I handed over my Eftpos card for payment only to be told there were no Eftpos facilties and they only accepted cash or Credit card. They only had a manual credit card machine. It is extremely rare to find any outlet without Eftpos facilities these days, and I found it particularly ironic that even though the reception was low-tech, the campground had Wi-Fi access.
We camped in the pet friendly area with a group of 3 families one of whom brought a dog, and were told within about 30 minutes of arrival that they had to keep the dog quiet. If it is a pet-friendly campground as claimed then this is an unusual response from the owner.
The campground facilities are extremely old and basic. " I (Anna Blatter) took over this park in 1990 and am committed to the parks continued development" reads the blurb on the back of the camp map. It appears that this doesn't apply to the amenity block which probably hasn't been touched since 1990. There were only 2 toilets and showers in the mens.
The pool was old and tired. The playground was just a trampoline and a rope swing which the kids seemed to enjoy nontheless.
We had a good time only because we were with a group of friends, but won't be back unless the facilities are vastly improved. Having worked in the tourism industry previously, I understand the difficulties of operating a seasonal business but if other holiday parks are able to provide a higher standard then so can Te Aroha campground.

Room Tip: No Eftpos facilites - be prepared with enough cash or credit card.

My family stayed in these holiday for quite a few times as we have family in the area. For us, it is home away from home.
The staff in the holiday park are really friendly and helpful, the flat are nice and clean. Afforadable price, handy location to Te Aroha town. Also, my kids really enjoyed the tree swing.
We are looking forward to go back next holiday:)

We were told we could bring a pet and then told it's not okay to have it there. Had to hide the dog away in case others saw it and got upset. We went out and were told we were irresponsbile for confining our pet in a cage in our room, we were told not to leave the pet alone ever while we stayed. This meant we could not puruse any family activites in the grounds. We left on the same day we arrived dissapointed and upset by our experience.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a towel each, we got given two towels for three people
