My friends and I visited Gecko lounge for 2 nights and the services was great. We liked the chalets, simple and clean and comfortable. We had all our meals at the restaurant where they have the most delicious pizzas and burgers. You must try the super gecko pizza and the chilli sauce beef burger. The best food we had while we were in Malawi. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, attended to all our requests. Be prepared to dance the night away as you have some drinks at the bar, but dont worry when you are ready to sleep, the music cant be heard from the chalets. However, in the morning there is a lot of noise coming from the village, children playing etc and might disturb your sleep.
But that did not taint our image of the place. We had a good variety of activities, the sunset cruise, snorkeling, feeding the fish eagle- as our boat "captain/chef" prepared some fresh fish for us to eat by the water.
Thanks Gecko Lounge crew, we totally enjoyed ourselves.

I heard that Gecko Lounge made the best Pizza in Malawi, so I decided to go an check it out for myself. Their Pizza is the best and I even took one for take away :)
I am not sure what their rooms look like as I did not stay there, but from what I could see it looked very comfortable and clean.

I came here with a big group of friends for dinner and the food was very nice. The pizzas were great. The service was good and quite fast.
The view out over the lake is also amazing, especially around sunset.

Definitely the best pizzas and hamburgers I have had in Malawi, but don't be in a rush after ordering...
A very busy spot with friendly staff, and a popular restaurant and bar, but definitely not for older people looking for a quiet holiday spot. But I recommend everyone visiting Malawi to go to Chembe Village at least once to experience the life in a fisherman's village. The locals are living right next door to Gecko Lounge; they are washing themselves, dishes and clothes in the lake. Not the best spot to swim and snorkel, but going on a boat trip from Gecko Lounge to snorkel at Otter Point or Thumbe Island is a must.

Cape Maclear was our favourite spot on our road trip of Malawi. We hired a car from http://www.littocarrentals.com/ (who we can recommend highly). There are many places to stay along the lake, but we chose Gecko Lounge and were very impressed. It is easy to get to with good signage and backs right on to the lake with pretty specky sunset views.

We stayed in the dorm which was very clean and probably one of the best dorms I’ve stayed in as it had these thatch partitions giving you the sense that you had your own little room. The bathrooms were clean, with constant warm water for showers. The only black-eye of Gecko is the neighbour… a very noisy rooster that cleared his throat every morning at 4am! There is also some street noise as the dorm backs on to the road – so bring earplugs :)

The food was delicious (from $4 for brekky and $6-10 for lunch/dinner). Can get cheaper in town but we enjoyed all the meals we had at Gecko. There is also a cheaper restaurant called Banapaya(?) just down the road which had delicious food for around $4-6 but be prepared to wait for an hour or more for your meal!

We went snorkelling, which although doesn’t compare to the Great Barrier Reef, was worth doing. There is a risk of bilharzia swimming in the lake, but we took our chances as the water is so beautiful. Gecko has its own guide, but it is very pricey and you don’t necessarily need to go with him. We went for $10 each with the SCUBA dive place for around 2 hours which was a good amount of time. (One member of our party went scuba diving, and the rest of us tagged along – so we are not sure what the cost would be if only snorkelling).
We definitely recommend a visit to Cape Maclear – we only wish we had stayed longer!

The Gecko Lounge is in an extremely built up area of Cape maclear. Its quirky and great to visit for drinks or a meal but an extremely busy spot to stay at. I would imagine that this would appeal to those travellers in their early twenties as it looks like the party continues well into the early hours. If you are looking for a quiet spot for accommodation in this beautiful part of the world - this is not it.

Gecko lounge is situated in beautiful surroundings, serves good food (try the Spo burger), and has clean rooms with a personality. You're right on the beach, and in the middle of the city if you want to explore the curios shops or the missionary graveyard. The hammocks are great for relaxing after a long day out on the water. We stayed in a dorm, and were very happy with our stay!
