“Renovating - Handy for catching Ferry to Dover next Day”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

One gets the feeling that an injection of money or new owners have taken over the establishment. They were busy cleaning the outside, and our room had a lovely new bathroom - not quite in keeping with the feel of the Chateau. The rooms are in need of refurbishing and refreshing, but the staff were quite helpful - the dinner menus are good value for money, simple fair but lovely food and breakfast was reasonably basic but filling. Not a long stay holiday location YET but it was a very good spot for catching the ferry the next day.

We have stayed at this hotel several times over 15 years and have always been impressed with the restaurant quality and the staff attentiveness. Its location is ideal for an overnight stay before returning to the UK via Calais or as afirst stop on the way into deepest France. Our most recent was a little disappointing only because the service was not as welcoming as before. Since leaving the "Best Western" hotel group the owners have commenced refurbishing the rooms notably the bathrooms which are to a better standard than I have seen at this hotel previously. The rooms are comfortable if a little bizarre in their furnishings, a mix of new and old styles which doesn't always work.. The restaurant is still excellent quality with good service, reasonable choice and price. The wine list is particularly good and reasonably priced for a restaurant of this standing, cheapest wines around £18 £25ish for a reasonable Cotes Du Rhone. I have read a few reviews refering to the musty smell in the corridors, I must say that there has always been a similar smell but I am not sure it is musty, it reminds me of old furniture polish rather than damp and I have not experienced it in the rooms

Room Tip: The hotel often offers standard room with breakfast included for around 110 Euros which is good valu...

We booked into the Chateau for a 2 night stay, including breakfast, at the last minute after Hurricane Sandy cancelled out trip to NY. We booked a deluxe room with a double bed. Check in was very easy a quick show of our on-line reference confirmation and we were shown to our room. The first thing that struck was the damp smell in the cold corridor leading to the room. For a so called deluxe room the room was very basic. The double bed was 2 singles pushed together which is a particular bug bear of ours. The bathroom was very basic, bath no shower and a plug with chain not atached. There were 3 screws on the sink unit which we couldnt figure out what or where they were from. There was a TV in the room but no tea or coffee facilities, disappointing for a deluxe room. Breakfast was very basic and certainly not worth 13 Euro's. We did have an eveining meal on the first night which was not too bad. This place could be spectacular if a significant amount of money was spent on it.

Our last night before heading back to England was at this lovely chateau. It was a quiet Sunday evening and there were only a few guests in the bar and the dining room. Our elegant room with a most modern en-suite overlooked the front lawn, and the scrabbling hens. We dined in where several menus were on offer. We chose the Menu Saissonier. The amuse-bouche, starter and main course were all tasty with the only disappointment being my dessert of Foret Noire which was served as a trifle in a coupe.
The peace and quiet, understated grandeur and general ambience all contributed to an excellent end to an excellent holiday touring the region.

Oh how I do wish we had read the recent reviews before we arrived as we would have cancelled and avoided the distress of a sleepless night.
In a nutshell-there is an overpowering musty all pervading odour in the corridors and bedrooms which gets into everything, even to the stage of making sleep difficult- made even worse by an intermittent drains smell from our bathroom.
It is a shame because the Chateau has so much going for it-5 minutes from AutorouteJ1 ,20 minutes from Calais, lovely grounds, quiet position, stylish dining room and the owners have spent a fortune on designer bathrooms (ours had a monsoon shower) and new TV’s and beds-all wasted money because of the unpleasant smell.Other guests also commented, and complained about the smells.
The staff said “we will mention it to our colleague” but as the hotel was full no alternative rooms were available and we were on the ground floor and could not open the window because of security concerns. The public rooms, however, are odour free.
The staff are friendly and put up admirably with a very rowdy young group, led by the loudest mouth in London -mobile phone salespeople, weekend bonding perhaps ?
The dining room is stylish and the menu, although limited, was good although the chef does not have a light touch. We lingered late in the bar, not wanting to confront the smells or the noise in the restaurant, to no avail.
A miserable nights sleep awaited us,after a long drive through France,as the odour wafted around us.
All in all a very big disappointment ruining what could have been a pleasant stay.
And to think we changed our booking from Hotel Meurice to Cocove, what a big,big mistake!

Avoid.

Room Tip: Don't book here until they sort their smells out.

I have never in my life walked out of a restaurant in sheer exasperation - until my wife and I attempted to dine here. It took around fifteen minutes for our order to be taken and around thirty for the first course to appear. After ninety - yes ninety - minutes we gave up waiting for the next course and walked out. Other diners were experiencing the same delays - one chap got up no less than three times to chase his order and another got up and helped himself to bread from another table. An utter shambles. I made it clear that I did not expect to be charged for a meal that had not been served and it did not appear on the bill the next morning - what was also missing however was an apology. The room was pretty uninspiring. We stayed in nine hotels in France on this trip: eight were very good to excellent. Nothing would persuade us to return to Le Chateau de Cocove.

We stayed in a 'superior' room on the ground floor. My most abiding memories will be the smell of damp in the corridor [ only to be expected from an old building] but far worse was the awful dank and drainy smell in our room. Also only one light worked out of three dim lights. Obviously the room had not been checked for days. We were moved next door which was slightly better. One member of staff had to do everything: receptionist/bar maid/ waitress. Consequently service was very slow, too much for one person to do. Dinner was ok, nothing special for the price. Our clothes still smelled of the room when we got home! I wished we had stayed at the Holiday Inn at Calais as we had done the week before on our way out.
