“A jewel amid the vineyards”
Reviewed June 25, 2009

My husband and I are enchanted by le Relais du Val d'Orbieu. The owners are incredibly nice people. Mrs Gonzalvez decorated the Relais and it is truely beautiful and serene. Mr Gonzalvez is the perfect host. Their dog Jeff, a big yellow lab, is part of the welcoming committee and everybody loves him. Their chef, a 30 year old man is a genius, born with the gift of cooking. I dare say that the meals he prepared were perhaps the best meals that my husband and I had ever eaten.....and we are connaisseurs of good food. The relais located amid the vineyards is beautiful, peaceful and enticing, close to the Mediterranean Sea and the medieval city of Carcassonne, it is the perfect spot to relax after a full day in the Languedoc sun.

We have stayed at this hotel several times both with and without children. The location is fabulous although the cars on the nearby road are often moving very fast. The owner is helpful and friendly and Jeff (his Labrador), is good with children and great to hang out with. The food is great; I especially like the way that the child menu consists of smaller portions of the adult dishes. I love the caramelised cherry tomato aperitif which I could eat for ever. The wine selection is good - I particularly recommend the local rose what the owner will be happy to point guests at. Rooms are clean and tasteful with good quality televisions and mini bars. The pool is 'un chemically' which makes for a non smelly and very refreshing dip and the terrace and gardens are just wonderful. Across the road is a basic but usable tennis court. If I have any criticism, it is that neither food nor drinks are served at lunchtime or in the afternoon. This can lead to a very thirsty flop by the pool although the village about 1km away has a reasonably friendly bar (especially if you like rugby which is the religion in Ornaissons), and the local bakery has roqufort cheese straws to die for.

We stayed here for 4 days as part of a touring holiday in Languedoc. I'm afraid the days seemed long ones. Partly this was because the weather was disappointing and my husband wasn't very well - neither of which, of course, was the hotel's fault. But the accommodation was a disappointment too.

We'd booked and paid for a 'superior' room but, apparently because of a misunderstanding between the hotel and the holiday company (VFB) ,were initially shown a poky and very basic little room. Having agreed to pay extra, we moved to one which was a good size, but still rather lacklustre, and far from luxurious. An annoying feature was that there was no air conditioning yet neither had the windows been fitted with protective screens to exclude mosquitoes (as had been done in some other rooms). In July this meant an unpleasant choice between being too hot at night or getting bitten.

We had booked half-board but found the food unimpressive, though quite pretentious, and the atmosphere again lacklustre. The service was sometimes slow and the wine very expensive - although we were surrounded by vineyards. The owner did chat to us a certain amount (in English, whilst we prefer to practice our French in France). However, we gained the impression, perhaps unfairly, that the welcome lacked genuine warmth. Perhaps we were failing to play our parts as appreciative English tourists.

The hotel is situated some way from the nearest village. Again, we certainly wouldn't blame the hotel itself for this - but those who, like us, like to walk their dinner down should be aware of it. The choice for doing this is a dark, but quite busy, road or a rather short march between the vines.

All in all, I would definitely come down in the camp of the first reviewer on this one.

As for places to see, we enjoyed walking by the Canal du Midi, but Carcassonne, in July at least, was another disappointment - more like a tacky Disneyland than a medieval town, with heaving crowds and innumerable noisome tourist-trap restaurants and bars.

My husband and I spent one night at this hotel in March. We had booked 2 nights at a hotel in Sete, but decided that we didn't like the town at all and we only stayed one night. The restaurant though at the Grand Hotel was good. Having decided to move on we looked for a hotel in the Homps area where we were due to view some properties we were interested in. Our Tom Tom came up with the Relais du Val and we decided to give it a try. As the previous reviewer commented, Mr Jeff the labrador rushed out to meet us, closely followed by his owner, who couldn't have been more welcoming. Our room was very bright, clean and cheery. When we went into the restaurant for dinner it was like home from home with the colour scheme of yellow, white and red being the same as our kitchen. The proprietor came to our table several times during the meal to make conversation about the hotel and his family, which made us feel very much at home. The food was very good and well presented. Afterwards we took coffee in the cosy lounge with it's bar and extensive range of malt whiskeys. All in all we were very impressed and would certainly go back if we were in the area again.

  • Liked — Both the owner and his wife were very welcoming and friendly.
  • Disliked — It was perhaps a little overpriced, although there is not too much competition in the area.

My fiance and I recently traveled from Montpellier to Narbonne to visit the Relais du Val Hotel, hoping to find a venue for our marriage this summer. We are planning to have less than a dozen guests, so we hoped that a hotel this size might accomodate our group. Upon our arrival, however, the owner was incredibly curt and negative towards us. We were looking specifically for a venue to house our 10 guests overnight as well as dinner in the hotel restaurant. Before we could even give the owner our details (approximate date, budget, etc) he told us "No". Obviously, he was not interested in our business. The grounds were considerably shabbier than the pictures depicted on the hotel's website, and the only welcoming aspect was the charming Yellow Labrador that greeted us with a wagging tale (perhaps the owner could learn from his hospitable pet). We quickly left the "chateau" and decided we'd take our money elsewhere.
