My family of three loved our Easter week stay at Fleurs des Iles. Although this hotel is (incredibly) only a two-star, it fully merits the previous five-star reviews on Tripadvisor. The hotel is located two kilometres north of the small town of Deshaies and about 40 kilometres from Pointe a Pitre and the airport, on the more mountainous and scenic half (Grande Terre) of Guadaloupe. It comprises a semi-circle of 20-odd bungalows aligned around a tropical garden and swimming pool, just 100 metres behind the beautiful, golden beach of Grande Anse.
The bungalows are cute, colourfully decorated and immaculate, both inside and out. Inside there is a main bedroom, a decent-sized bathroom and a small second bedroom which has a single bed, a bunk bed or both, depending on the bungalow. The second bedroom also contains shelves for clothes and storage. The smaller bedroom is fine if you have no kids or (like us) just one, but would be rather cramped for two or more children. The airconditioning is quiet and efficient. The front third of the bungalow consists of an open eating/sitting area and well-equipped kitchen, which is very pleasant as it looks over the beautiful, flower-filled garden and is discretely screened from neighbours.
There is no restaurant in the hotel but this is not a problem. Around 700 am each morning a well-stocked baker's van calls at the hotel, with excellent French bread, patiseries and even quiches. At lunchtime there are half-a-dozen restaurants to choose from along the beach, just five minutes walk away. Nearly all of those are shut in the evening, but then there is a van selling excellent takeaway pizzas parked on the main road, or a decent takeaway "traiteur" called Creole Passion, 300 metres inland. Alternatively, you can always drive to one of the harbour-side restaurants in Deshaies (a hire car is pretty essential here). Another big plus is free internet access for guests in the hotel reception.
The best thing about this hotel is the location. Very light sleepers may notice an occasional farmyard animal (including an over-enthusiastic cockerell) or the distant rumble of a lorry on the mainroad, but the overwhelming impression is one of peace and tranqulity. It is so pleasant to be able to stroll barefoot from bungalow to the pool and beach, with no road to cross or stairs to take. The pool is not particularly large but was often empty and never had more than five or six people in or around it. The beach is also peaceful. Even on the Easter weekend, it was uncrowded and spacious.
In conclusion, anyone looking for animation and night life should consider one of the large hotels on the flatter wing of the island (Grande Terre). For those seeking a peaceful getaway in tropical surroundings, Fleurs des Iles is the perfect place.
