Owner description: A Spectacular Botanical Garden and Wildlife Park Open to the public since the 1st April 2001, the Botanical Gardens at Deshaies are a recent creation. This park, whose youth is imperceptible, has very quickly imposed itself as the place to be for nature enthusiasts and lovers of tropical plants. Situated on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, 100m in altitude up above the town of Deshaies, the garden stretches out over 5 hectares of sloping mountainside. Its favourable location guarantees beautiful views over the coast and an unrivalled vantage-point overlooking the bay of Deshaies. The site was already home to a nursery created by Guy Blandin, a plant-lover who brought rare and unknown plant species from his travels around the world back to Guadeloupe. Many of them unfortunately disappeared when Cyclone Hugo hit and severely damaged the island in 1989. The humorist Michel Colluci, also known as Coluche, acquired the property in 1979. A few years later, in 1985, he invited his friend Michel Gaillard, an interior landscaper in mainland France, to set up his nursery there in exchange for taking care of the property's garden. A year later, the death of Coluche brought the future of the property back into question. Michel Gaillard bought back the property in 1991 to honour the memory of his friend, with the idea in mind of creating a botanical garden. This risky and ambitious project required several years of planning, of research into its feasibility and then of execution. The garden was finally brought about in accordance with Michel Gaillard's and the landscaper Samuel Craquelin's plans. Over the course of the path which snakes its way through the gardens, visitors today discover a world of real abundance: a world with 800 species of plant all brought together, with several animal species, which were introduced much to the delight of children, and with the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes following one after the other. Tourists are invited on an unforgettable walk amidst fifteen or so different scenes.

As we arrived in Deshaies via our sailboat, we walked up to the garden. It is a bit steep but very doable, 1.4 k. The garden itself is just lovely. So many beautiful flowers and incredible plants. We thoroughly enjoyed a meander through the garden.

If you are in need of a fresh, cool breeze, go for an easy stroll in the Botanical Garden in Deshaies. It is all worthwhile and a great alternative to the beach.

We hiked up from Deshaies, 1.5 K all uphill. If you aren't in decent shape you might want to hire a taxi. Admission was pricey, but it was worth it. The gardens are extensive and very well kept. There is one paved path that leads through the gardens so it is very easy to navigate through. However, the path is not handicap friendly - it is very hilly and would be difficult for someone with crutches or in a wheelchair.
One minor annoyance - all of the signs were in French. Period. You might want to have a translation dictionary handy.

Having visited other Carib gardens, our expectations were somewhat low. But this place simply blew us away with its diversity, magnificent collections, and sheer beauty. Walking the paths were a delight with pleasant surprises at every turn.

The level of gardening is extensive with mixes of African, Asian, and other species of fauna and flora both mixed and separate in their displays. The cleanliness and orderly presentation was exceeded only by the diversity. The plants were largely immense when compared with our home-town varieties. The features of the parrots, the waterfalls, etc., were outstanding.

There are two issues we should mention -
The gardens are located high above the port and impossible to walk up the necessary hills - don't think about not taking a cab
The signage is substantial but exclusively in French - a problem for non-speakers like us.

But there is so much to enjoy, the fact that you can't read about it is no problem.

Wow so much to do here! My partner loved feeding the fish, it made for some great pictures. We loved the walk around taking our time to appreciate the beautiful flowers and plants. The waterfall with the bridge was a stunning location and we loved seeing the flamingos, goats and birds. We knew it was the number one attraction in Deshaies so this was one not to be missed!
