Owner description: A Spectacular Botanical Garden and Wildlife Park Open to the public since the 1st April 2001, the Botanical Gardens at Deshaies are a recent creation. This park, whose youth is imperceptible, has very quickly imposed itself as the place to be for nature enthusiasts and lovers of tropical plants. Situated on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, 100m in altitude up above the town of Deshaies, the garden stretches out over 5 hectares of sloping mountainside. Its favourable location guarantees beautiful views over the coast and an unrivalled vantage-point overlooking the bay of Deshaies. The site was already home to a nursery created by Guy Blandin, a plant-lover who brought rare and unknown plant species from his travels around the world back to Guadeloupe. Many of them unfortunately disappeared when Cyclone Hugo hit and severely damaged the island in 1989. The humorist Michel Colluci, also known as Coluche, acquired the property in 1979. A few years later, in 1985, he invited his friend Michel Gaillard, an interior landscaper in mainland France, to set up his nursery there in exchange for taking care of the property's garden. A year later, the death of Coluche brought the future of the property back into question. Michel Gaillard bought back the property in 1991 to honour the memory of his friend, with the idea in mind of creating a botanical garden. This risky and ambitious project required several years of planning, of research into its feasibility and then of execution. The garden was finally brought about in accordance with Michel Gaillard's and the landscaper Samuel Craquelin's plans. Over the course of the path which snakes its way through the gardens, visitors today discover a world of real abundance: a world with 800 species of plant all brought together, with several animal species, which were introduced much to the delight of children, and with the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes following one after the other. Tourists are invited on an unforgettable walk amidst fifteen or so different scenes.

“Beautiful gardens in an amazing setting”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

Every season is different and none disappoint. I have visited these gardens a couple of times. You need time to explore every area, the plants, trees and flowers are everwhere, most are exotic and incredibly beautiful. The birds, fish, flamingos and water features add to the exotic atmosphere. Take time to relax into the gardens, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the beauty. You will need energy to walk the walks and a bottle of water. There are orchids growing high in trees and on the ground - stand still and look around and you will see yet more and varied plants. And don't forget to admire the views out to sea.

Pity that both times I visited the restaurant was closed. The cafe at the end had drinks but no food and it was all rather dull and down to earth after such an exotic afternoon.

“Worth a visit if you like gardens”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Enjoyed a stroll through the gardens. Combine the visit with snorkelling from the beach or by boat at Malendure, 20 minutes away

“Beautiful exotic garden”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

While the garden was quite beautiful, offering almost every plant species of Guadeloupe, I found the entrance fee of 13 Euros a bit steep.

“Relaxing garden”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

I visited this garden with my husband during our last holidays. It is quite easy to get there, the signages are alright and you will enjoy to drive through the small fishermen town and greenery to get there.
The garden is just huge it can be exhausting, so take your time to enjoy it. Maybe bring a book along and make sure you make stops on benches. You can even plan a small lunchbag.
There s a lot of plants and trees to see, not too many animals but it is a great place! well maintained with amazing views. The have a nice restaurant with panoramic view. I adored the water tunnel! Give it a try!
The only negative point would be the price. Its not that cheap though it's worth the price, if you wanna do many attractions in Guadeloupe you have to plan well.

“Just beautiful”
Reviewed July 27, 2012

Take a bottle of water with you, you'll need it. This place is super size! With so much to see, massive trees, crazy looking flowers and exotic birds to feed. O, and there's a restaurant by the waterfall. Just beautiful!

If you love flowers, take extra camera batter and memory with you. There's really lots picture moment in this place.

Don't were an all white outfit! There's a shower of water spray at the end, so unless you want all your undies to show, don't wear all white.
