“Friendly atmosphere, nice staff, beautiful location, remote”
Reviewed July 30, 2010

We spent two weeks at the langley Fort Royal, half board package. We stayed in one of the standard bungalows.

Location
The hotel is located on the Basse-terre which is the mountaineous one of the two main islands in Guadeloupe, and also the least exploited one from tourism point of view. Transfer time is some 45 - 60 minutes from the airport.

The location is immediately by the sea and the hotel has its own beach with golden sand. The hotel is located quite remotely with no other settlements to speak of in the neighborhood. The upside is that the place is really quiet with beautiful surroundings. The downside is that there are few, if any, food and drink alternatives within walking distance. I would definitely recommend renting a car to make most of your stay (Avis has an office at the hotel).

Now, this said, the hotel is really nice place to stay, it has all the facilities you would expect and several of Guadeloupe's best beaches are within 5-10 km. E.g. the Grande Anse beach.

Clientele
Vast majority of clientele is Scandinavians and French with some other nationalities represented; from families with kids to couples and parties over a wide range of ages.

Atmosphere
The staff (many young scandinavians in the low 20's) is extremely nice and helpful and seemed to care about customer satisfaction. The atmosphere is relaxed.

About the food:
The breakfast buffet offers all you need.
The half board with evening buffet is definitely recommended. Freshly cooked food, a good mix with a variety of international and creole dishes, salads, cheese, deserts...

The room:
Bungalow we stayed was newly renovated, clean and fresh, quite small but standard was good. with internet access, although quite limited bandwidth/speed.

Activities:
Quite many activities are arranged by the hotel; water sports, diving, activities for kids, tennis court etc. as well as excursions. Music live performances once or twice a week.

But again, I would recommend renting a car and exploring the island on your own.

Starting off I have to recommend flying Royal class with Air Caraibes. Great service worth the money! The hotel is beautifully located in an isolated spot! If you want to try other restaurants you have to rent a car. We have all inclusive which made everything easy. Breakfast and lunch was great but dinner tasted to bland meaning it was accomodating to scandinavians. Langley should either hire local chefs or train the swedish chefs more in using local spices. Part of travelling is trying the local food. One should also be aware that it can get busy around the dinner tables since there are many families with smaller children. It's bufe so people walk back and forth all the time. If you are a couple travelling without children and want romantic dinners the only choice on the premises are the restaurant next door to the big restaurant. Same chefs but the food tasted better and the service was excellent by a local waiter named Didier. The staff hired to wait on you (scandinavians) were at times very forgetful and we had to remind them of our order. The beach bar was great, relaxing chairs and nice palmtrees for shade. The activities offered around the hotel was great for every age group. Thanks Vincent for a great dive and Hans for a nice sailing day on your beautiful boat. We stayed in a bungalow - beautiful. Looked at a hotel rooms which was also very nice. Drove around the island which is beautiful with very little tourists. A visit to the rainforest is recommended. If you have a chance take the boat of to Ille de Gosier. All in all great vacation with small irritating issues. But please, remove the 1 euro charge for changing your beachtowels. I would reccomend this hotel to friends but inform them of certain things like food quality in the evening, lack of peaceful meals at dinner and the pace of service at some times. Scandinavians are very tolerant and gladly wait, but if you were to expand to for example american tourists the pace would have to pick up as well as the service mindness of waiters/waitresses.

Langleys Fort Royal is based on a semi Club Med concept. The hotel is a bit isolated, but all you need is on the premises. The location is absolutely beautifull. The hotel guest have the beach more or less to themselves and it never feels crowded. Quite the oposite sometimes. There's also a more secluded beach on the other side of the hotel. Since the hotel is situated away from the road with the local town a few kilometres away, you feel that the beach is "yours". That also meens that you can leave your items on the sunbed without the fear of theft. There aren't any beach sellers either.

We stayed with to children of 9 and 3 in a large suite with panoramic view of the sea. A spaceous and great room with two bathrooms, where the only noise was the soft rumbling of braking waves. The hotel was perfectly suited for our family needs. The staff (mostly Swedish but some locals) are very friendly and efficient. Language is no problem as both French and English (and a lot of Swedish) are spoken. We stayed with "all inclusive" which is not completely all inclusive, but close enough (drinks are included but only in the beach bar, no between meals snacks are included). The food is excellent with a mixture of western and carribean flavours. Both breakfast and dinner is buffet, but the variety and quality means that everybody will find their favourite.

The hotel arranges a number of trips from vulcano hiking to boating, diving and sightseeing trips. Hertz also has a car rental office in the reception.

We travel quite a lot (also with our kids), and we can honestly say that the stay at Fort Royal went beyond our expectations. A truly wonderfull holiday!

Can't remember how I found this hotel but I'm glad I did. Apparently it's just been reopened after several years. Thois is evident from the dining and bar areas but not so much from the main accomodation block. It was the old Club Med location but they've since moved closer to Gosier. The hotel itself is a bit isolated from many of the 'go to' sights on Guadeloupe but the Botanical Gardens are relatively nearby.

First off this hotel seems to cater largely for Swedish torists who are flown out direct from Stockholm every fortnight. What this does mean is that if you no habla Francais then you'll have no problem because even Swedish taxi drivers speak excellent English. It's also geared up for kids so there are a lot of young families.

We went half board which (it turns out) includes all unpowered watersports so you can spend hours on the Hobies and/or windsurfers. The beach is wide and good for body surfing although there's not much to see if you're snorkelling. On the upside there are no big rocks underfoot and thebeach is shallow into the water. The hotel provides masses of sunloungers and there is plenty of shade if you need it. The pools are good for the kids and the kids club is good value. Breakfasts and evening meals are excellent and include free wine (not at breakfast though). As much as you want as well as rum/punch.

There is also a dive shop onsite where you can get your PADI certification and they organise various cruises/snorkel trips and sightseeing trips throughout the week if you don't want to rent your own car.

I'd certainly stay here again not only because of the excellent facilities but because it is a bit off the beaten track and because my wife speaks practically no French so she enjoyed it simply because she did'nt have to wait on me to translate everything.

Just arrived home from my best vacation ever. Langley, and Björn Bjerregard has succeeded with creating the perfect holiday resort. The hotel is great with a servicelimit that reaches the top :-) Great food (can't understand other bad comments about their food) and our room was more than we expected. Langley has prepared everything for you so that you don't have to make any efforts at all - just relax and enjoy your vacation.
If you would like to do anything else than getting a great tan, they have hobie cats for sailing, windsurfing, canoes, bicycles a wonderful area to walk in.
I have never felt so relaxed after having a vacation and when we arrived home we looked for the next trip back to the wonderful island Guadeloupe and Langleys hotel....
