Stayed in the hotel for 4 nights to attend a company conference there. It claims to be a 5-star hotel, and indeed has all the hardware to justify the grading. Modern and grandiose design, with an impressively huge lobby featuring as its centre-piece a lanscape pond with a large school of eye-catching colourful carp swimming around, spacious and well-appointed guest rooms and all the amenity facilities you can look for. Reasonably priced too, very much reflecting its location in a 3rd tier city in the backwaters of the Guangdong Province. Unfortuantely, its attraction probably stops just at those.

What lets the hotel down most is its food service. We had our buffet breakfasts and most lunches in the coffee shop during the course of the conference; but both the choice and quality of the food there were disappointing. One would be generous to rate these as 4-strar standard. The more expensive Chinese meals served in the fucntion rooms came through better, but then most became cold when served at the plate.

As other commentators have remarked, soundproofing in the room is inadequate, and the noise of TV in the next room can come through the wall.

Staff were trying their best to display hospitality in offering services at the dining venues and in the conference room; but were somewhat lacking in sophistication. I suppose given its location, there may be limitation in recruiting and retaining well-experienced personnel.

This may well be the best hotel in the area; but it can certainly benefit from improving the F&B services as well as devoting more efforts to frontline staff training and development.

The Crown Plaza in Zhanjiang has a quite impressive lobby area with a huge koi fish pond and it seems people just come to look at it. What I did notice entering, was that strange smell there. The acoustic is not the greatest either.
After we checked in and went to our room on the 18th floor we found that the room was moldy and the bathroom had this terrible odor (I am guessing plumbing issues). It seems they are having problems with AC condensation there as well, which creates mold. It did not take long until I felt very uncomfortable in this environment. We than went to the reception and told them about it and they quickly changed our room to one on the 21st floor. There the room was fine. Obviously it is known that there are problems on the 18th floor since I noticed that the doors were kept ajar to create a draft to air the rooms out.
One day I used the bathroom on the lobby floor and was disgusted to find it very stinky. The one on the break fast restaurant floor is fine.
The breakfast buffet (mix of western and chinese food) was ok.
The staff we dealt with was very friendly and they did speak English well enough.
It would have been a much more pleasant stay if we would been booked onto the 21st floor from the start.

Room Tip: Avoid the 18th floor.

Spent 2 nights here as part of a business trip, hotel public areas are of a very high standard. Room was particularly well decorated with good facilities ( Deluxe room 21st floor).
As with a lot of modern buildings soundproofing was minimal, it was possible to hear conversations and Television from adjacent rooms and the constant blaring of Car Horns was audible through the window.
Staff were excellent and spoke very good English which was good as I don't speak any Chinese.

Room Tip: The higher floors are a better standard.

Stayed there a couple of times. This week I was staying there 2 nights and having a meeting across the road at the Hafree. Last time, I held a conference in the hotel itself.

Service was good throughout. Food in the breakfast place is quite good. Banquet meals in the banquet rooms are good, as Zhanjiang has great Cantonese food, especially seafood. The lobby has a bar/cafe of sorts, and the carp pool is spectacular.

The room was very spacious. I stayed in a Deluxe King. Huge, comfortable bed. I could make a decent cup of coffee. There was a good internet connection, and the usual TV channels, including both Discovery and Nat Geo for you (us) air crash investigative types.

The conference we held went ahead smoothly. Coffee and snacks twice a day, tea at all times. Good audio-visual gear (video projector, microphones, network). Hint: if you hold a multinational conference, ask the hotel to write the name of the conference in both languages, or somebody may not find the room :-(

The only downside for me was the local gay teen in the pool asking for swimming lessons and trying to hold hands. The hotel should come down on that sort of behaviour. The pool itself has no wave damper and gets very splashy. There's no shade and it's insanely hot in summer. If you want a swim, go next door to the new hotel, the Sovereign. They have a covered lap pool.

Room Tip: Rooms face east and west. You can have early or late sun.

I accompanied my husband to Zhanjiang on business and spent three nights in the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The hotel is modern, well equipped and spotlessly clean. The lobby, with it's enormous carp pool, cave and temple, could almost be considered the best tourist attraction in town. Zhanjiang is an industrial city and is not really geared up to cater for foreign tourists.

Our room was enormous with an extremely comfortable bed, a wide-screen tv, mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilites and free Wifi, that works every time. The bathroom is large and attractive with a full-size separate bath. The breakfast buffet offers both Western and Asian selections and is more than adequate.

The staff is friendly and helpful and will cheerfully find someone to assist, if their English limits their understanding of your request.
