“Excellend Hotel”
Reviewed October 1, 2010

We have just returned from Stoupa for the second year. This year we decided to try the Kastro hotel even thought we knew the restaurant was still closed. When we arrived we were greeted by the receptionist who explained a few rules. Overaul our room was spotlessly clean as was the rest of the hotel. The staff were friendly and did make an effort to have conversation with you not like some of the other reviews have said. It was in the perfect location right on the beach front and we were able to have breakfast looking out to sea. We enjoyed the hotel very much and have already booked for next year. This will be our 3rd year in stoupa. It is a beatiful small friendly greek resort and would recommend it to anyone.

Hotel Kastro is a beautiful hotel, great location, exceptionally clean but where is the 'warm and friendly welcome!'

Receptionist was far from accomodating, barking instructions at us as soon as we arrived after travelling 10 hours - we were obviously an inconveniene - would have been a great place to enjoy the sunset but we didn't feel welcome - everyone else must have felt the same as the place was empty

It wasn't the fantastic greek hospitality we have become used to on our travels

We arrived at the Kastro after a long but pleasant journey, we were taken to reception by our rep and left with Katerina, she is sullen & rude. She showed us to our room and proceded to show us how to open our balcony doors she said if you do not do it like this you will break them.Sun beds 5 euros. No restaurant but prices do not reflect this the holiday was very expensive as we stayed for a fortnight and had a sea view, Air conditioning was not effective and we suffered at night the second week which was very hot. Breakfast was bread ( toast) and jam in a basket served by Socrates, He was insulting and arrogant at first he then apologised when we stopped going down to breakfast as we decided to frequent the far superior coffee shop Divine next door for a filter coffee and she gave us free cake. The owners were around often but the general ambience of this hotel is dull & dreary. Its a shame that a lovely sun terrace was hardly ever used because it was such a difficulty getting Katerina to serve drinks.People would walk past and wonder why it was always in darkness in the evening, being on the sea front it was very obvious that things were not quite right. We would not go back .

We stayed at the Kastro from Aug 30-Sept 13 2009. Having read some reviews and wanting somewhere central it seemed ideal if a little expensive. We also liked the idea of the taverna as somewhere to eat and also drink and talk to other guests. The food had very good reviews.

However when we arrived it was obvious that things had changed.
The restaurant is no longer open and although there are still drinks available no one goes as the atmosphere is completely dead.

The warm welcome we had been expecting consisted of showing us to our room then delivering a list of rules, dos & donts.

The 2 staff were very polite but distant. The owners were around but made no effort to speak.

The breakfast was a joke – 2 pieces of dry toast, 1 butter, 1 jam,1 honey, a glass of orange and tea or coffee. EVERY DAY! To be fair we asked for an extra butter and were given it, but other guests asked for an alternative ( fruit or cake etc) and it was declined. We had paid for bed & breakfast but ended up buying breakfast elsewhere (Patrikos does a great one) a lot of days.

If you came home after 11 o clock at night all the lights were off and you had to grope for the key in the dark and take each key to the door to see the number. If it was the last key left you were required to lock the hotel.

The sheet on my husband’s bed was so thin that it ripped in the night, but was still on the bed the following night.

Overall the hotel is lovely, clean and well presented and the rooms although very cramped (which is usual in Greece) were well equipped. But we got the impression that a lot of cost cutting was being done to compensate for the loss of income from the restaurant.
We spoke to people who had been going there for a number of years but they all said it had changed and they would not be returning.

We will definitely be returning to Stoupa as we love it , but not to the Kastro I am afraid. We did not feel we had value for money.
