“Cast away - decent stay”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

Stayed there over a weekend! The hotel has everything to offer and the prices was totally fine as well! Its not one of the more luxurious alternatives in Unguja but good anyway! The service was very good and the staff very kind! The athmosphere was relaxed which i do prefer. You do not have many meters from the bungalows to the ocean -just pass the excellent Pool and then you are there! The biggest flaw for this hotel was evidently the rooms - wherein attaches bungalows.
I would strongly recomend a renovasion most soon. But anyway, you get what you pay for. If you are going for the a more luxurious stay at the islands of Zanzibar you have to pay at least 150 - 200 US/night! But anyhow that depends on the time of your stay - the season - which indeed can create really good prices and sometimes awefully high rates. If you are longing for picturesque villages Uroa is not the place - but for a decent stay with tremendous sunrises in the morning over the indian ocean to a decent rates - i highly recomend Tamarind!

Old property, yes. Low standard, yes. But for us - 4 adults and 3 kids -Tamarind was pure luxury. Perhaps it is because the hotel and the surroundings represents something you consider being lost and only belonging to the past.
In this hotel you are not hidden behind high walls and your everyday life is not ruled by a lot of regulations. The three kids loved for example the possibility to use the pool also in the night. The extraordenary warm and friendly people working at Tamarind didn't see any troubles in making you breakfast or dinner outside the ordinary hours and they did their best to make you feel satisfied.
We lived only a few metres from the fabulous, very long, white beach with seashells, animals, kind locals, extremely few tourists and no huzzling beach boys.
If you look for the kind of high standard hotels you find all over the world - don't choose this one. If you look for genuin atmosphere - go to Tamarind and ask for room 17 och 18 - they are the best!
Dear Tamarind - your big family from Finland loves you. We had a good week also in Nungwi but it felt artificial and crowdy compared to you. Good luck!

Room Tip: The two rooms 17 and 18 are closest to the sea. The view from their verandas is breathtaking.

Uroa beach, where Tamarind is located, is astoundingly beautiful, much less touristy than the beaches on the north coast and more "wild". Tamarind is located right on the beach and has a well kept swimming pool for swimming when the tide is low, definitely a bonus!

However the rooms when we stayed there in August 2011 were appalling. The access to the rooms is adjacent to open steps leading to an open terrace (no railing or anything) very dangerous for small children. Inside the room is musty and mouldy and dark. The decor leaves a lot to be desired, and isn't even of the standard of a "local local" hotel. We never had hot water although we asked for it to be turned on repeatedly. The shower was filthy and rusty and only trickled (cold) water the toilet moved when sat on. Also the light didn't work in the bathroom and was never fixed despite me telling them repeatedly The pillows on the bed are not very comfortable. We had originally booked for three nights but after the first uncomfortable night and lack of showering facilities we checked our and moved on.

Breakfast was good and hearty but we were disappointed by the quality of the food at dinner, everything tasted the same and we didn't feel great after eating there.

The staff were lovely and the manager was very disappointed when we decided to check out early. We told him he really needs to invest in his rooms to charge $90 per night b&b.

Room Tip: Make sure you see a variety of rooms before checking in!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights during low-season. The hotel has a very nice local vibe to it, and we got a room right on the beach. It was nice to be so close to the beach that we could hear the waves at night. We enjoyed hanging out on the hammocks that were adjacent to the beach, and it was a nice relaxing time.

The pool is nice and the staff was quite attentive.

The hotel is quite tired and could use some upgrading. The shower is not enclosed, so there are some major drainage issues when taking a shower. The mosquito nets could also be replaced.

There was only one other couple staying there while we were there, and we were disappointed to find out that since it wasn't busy, the hotel decided not to turn on the back-up generates. We unfortunately found out about this in the middle of the night when the fan/AC stopped working for three hours, effectively ruining a night of sleep. The hotel staff did turn on the back-up generator the next night after we complained about it.

If you don't mind your room being a bit tired, and want to go to a place just to do some reading/hanging out on a secluded beach, this may be the place for you.

Room Tip: When you book, call and ask for a beachfront room with A/C. I believe there are a few rooms in the c...

Tamarind Beach Hotel was the 3 night Zanzibar retreat we chose at the end of our family Kilimanjaro trip. We had a comfortable family room right on the beach. The service was excellent from the moment we were collected from the airport. The food was superb with generous portions. A range of excursions are offered. Wi-Fi connectivity was free and excellent. 24 hour security is visible. We will definitely be returning guests!

Me and my brother stayed here after a trip to Kili. Hotel has a very nice layout with little lodges dotted around. A very nice pool and is actually on the beach front. The beach is very nice, there is some seaweed but this is actually the better part as we had a walk up and down for quite a way.
When this hotel was opened up in 1994 it would have been amazing. However by now, the places is becoming run down and needs good investment to bring it back up to grade. The tired furniture is quite rustic but a lot of the sun lounge mattresses are torn, the walls have plaster falling off and there is a lot of general wear and tear. The pool is still excellent and well maintained.
The rooms are well sized but quite dark. The beds are okay but the bedding is not very good at all. The rooms have no TV, no fridge, no AC but do have fans and mosquito nets. The bathroom was generally ok in appearance/cleanliness but the shower was just a trickle and the taps were very rusty. The hotel uses salty water which no doubt contributes to the rapid corrosion of the metalwork. I did point this out to the hotel manager who said they change the taps every year but they just rust through very quickly. This maybe true as by the time I got home 3 days later, my razor blade was very rusty!
The restaurant at the hotel is good. Breakfast is included and it's usually fresh juice, toast, fruit and eggs in a variety of choices (scrambled, boiled, spanish, etc). The rest of the meals were actually very very good. All very good portions, well cooked, well presented and tasted amazing. I tried seafood mostly so the lobster, tuna, kingfisher and seafood platter were very good quality. The waiting was good also. The staff are friendly but have the tendancy to try to make their own offers to you to make some money on the side.
The hotel has wifi free too which was a godsend as some of the more expensive hotels charge for this. It was a good speed too but didn't extend to my room (it's mostly around the restaurant area).

The mood and atmosphere is very relaxed at this place and it surely is a nice and quiet place. The hammocks on the beach are great to just wind down on.

I would love for the owner to spend some money and renovate the place, put new bedding/curtains etc in and give the place a good once over, it would then be a wonderful rustic hotel like it once would have been.

Room Tip: Maybe you need to book the deluxe rooms and a seafront lodge to make the experience better.

We loved our stay here. We were here for 4 nights and loved this small hotel. The staff was so helpful, especially the bar and restaurant staff. It was lovely eating lunch by the pool and dinner listening to the waves on the beach. The beach itself isn't the best with a lot of sea weed and sea urchins but it has gorgeous white sand that makes up for it. The pool is good, shallow and deep end and an enclosed shallow area for kids and it was so quiet and relaxing. We liked not being in a big resort-style hotel and actually getting to know the staff and other travelers and it was great value for the price!!
