I have been coming to Sundance for many many years, with friends, with my kids, alone, you name it. There have been so many great trips, but this one just might be the best ever. How is that possible? It is hard to beat cowgirl weekend with your daughter.

Dearest Family of Sundance Guest Ranch,

What a lovely weekend! I am feeling stuffed with gourmet food, excellent service and heartfelt landscapes. Thank you for making us feel so welcome. It was our first time riding after many years and, like the staff, the horses were very patient and kind. Most memorable treasures of our weekend include new friends from Vancouver and Calgary, learning to two-step, beating my boyfriend on the vintage Pacman machine, and savouring the world's best chocolate soufflet ever made.

We will be seeing you next year, no question. And to my surprise and delight, the staff of SR will still remember guest names, share their favorite dusty boots, and impress us with their warm hospitality.

Room Tip: get a corner room facing the horse field so you can see the morning "jingle"

I'm on the last evening of my visit, and the ranch will be closed until April. I have one more ride left, one more amazing gallop through the sagebrush on one of my favourite horses. Everytime I leave I feel sad.

No more enormous fireplace, no more fantastic food, no more nights of coyote howls or owls calling, no more sights of bears and deer, no more horses' hooves pounding on the earth, raising dust, breathing hard, carrying me over the amazing desert landscape. Not until April.

But over winter the horses will grow their coats, will fatten up, will rest and become rejuvenated again. And in April the horses will be here, waiting for me.

So it isn't so sad. April is coming. I'll be back.

Sundance is a fantastic ranch; as total beginners we didn't know quite what to expect but it was better than we could ever have imagined! Real rustic comfy cabins with enormous cosy beds, fabulous ranch-style meals, and the friendliest staff and wranglers... really welcoming and accommodating of all levels of experience. By the time we had to leave :o( we felt we had really connected with the wilderness and the beautiful horses! Thanks for an amazing experience!

Room Tip: We had the Buffalo Room which had a fabulously huge window out to the pastures.

We went for one night in late September-- 14 girls celebrating a stagette! It was a 4 hour drive from Vancouver-- beautiful, scenic and easy. Stopped at Chris Under the Bridge for lunch in Ashcroft-- great diner and they serve breakfast all day.
The ranch was so helpful and welcoming even before we arrived, sending us emails with excitement and to ensure they catered to everyone's dietary needs and horse riding experience. We arrived early afternoon on Saturday, and after checking in we got fitted for cowboy boots and helmets to get ready for our afternoon ride. There were about 35 guests in total going out for the ride, but we were split up in to groups, and hardly saw anyone else when we rode through the hills for a few hours. The ride was a great pace, the horses were well kept, and the scenery was stunning. For the more experienced riders, there were plenty of opportunities to run. For the newbies, they could stay at a walk for the whole ride.
The rooms were small but clean, same with the bathrooms. The beds were very comfy, and sheets very clean. The food was amazing! They catered to everyone's specific dietary needs including celiac, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan. Best steak of my life that night (I'm not a vegetarian!). You can bring your own alcohol, and store it in the fridge in the bar area. You can also bring wine to dinner for a corkage fee of $8 per bottle. They sell their own alcohol as well, at a reasonable price.
After dinner, the music turns on in the bar area and the staff join the guests in line dancing and two stepping. So fun!! The is also a games room with a pool table, and other bar games. A massage room exists too, though we didn't get to indulge.
It was an amazing weekend, full of laughter and fun! The ranch encourages fun, especially on Saturday nights, but it is also a very tranquil place for a quiet getaway.
We will definitely go back!

Every interaction with staff (servers, wranglers, office staff, chef, other guests) was upbeat and positive. The horses, the people, the food, the environment, all good. The rooms are a bit rustic, but who cares, the beds are great and after a full day of riding, you fall right to sleep anyway. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the pasture; we could watch the horses run out in the evening and back again in...

This was our 4th visit to Sundance, each time I think the ranch can't possibly live up to my wonderful memories, and subsequent very high expectations, and yet each time it does!
The horses are fantastic, the best ranch horses that I have ever ridden. All are well mannered and responsive, yet sensible on the trails. The staff also make sure that all the riders are on the appropriate type of horse to ensure an enjoyable experience. The scenery is breathtaking and the wranglers take care to go on different routes so that the riders can enjoy all of the panoramic vistas. The food is awesome, the chef does a great job of accomodating various types of diets. The Saturday night dancing is a hoot, (must practice my cowboy 2 stepping) and the after ride complimentary margaritas really go down well!
The accommodation is very clean with super comfy beds, I always sleep well there. All of the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well looked after. Sundance is just a great place to go for a relaxing riding vacation, simply the best, in fact!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the meadow

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This is it - this is your ranch, only four hours from Vancouver, Canada! Whether you're looking for a horseback riding holiday with a bit of adventure, a family vacation at a dude ranch where even the kids will have fun, or just some place new where you can really get away from it all, you've found it. Sundance Guest Ranch is located in the warmest, sunniest spot in Canada with sweeping, panoramic views of the wide open Thompson River Valley that are so beautiful, they're ridiculous... but that's not it. Sundance Guest Ranch is just an easy four hour drive from Vancouver, Canada, making us a perfect weekend getaway destination... but that's not it. Sundance Guest Ranch serves absolutely amazing food that goes well beyond what you might expect from a "dude ranch"... but that's not it either. Sundance Guest Ranch runs a herd of over 100 happy, well-cared-for horses with thousands of acres of spectacular and varied terrain to explore, and the horseback riding is truly wonderful, whether you're looking for relaxing, instructive or exciting... but even that's not it. When you've just gotten back from a ride, and you're sitting on the lounge deck with your favourite drink in your hand, watching the herd gallop out to the field for the night and laughing with someone you've known ten minutes like you've known them ten years... lean back, put a foot up on the railing and look around... you're close, close to knowing why we say: "The first time, it's a vacation - after that, it's coming home." ... more   less
