By way of context, our travel style can de described as "value seeking" and "soft adventure". We have travelled reasonable extensively in SE Asia.

In summary our view of CM Cherating was: staff were fantastic; food was very good; the activities were great; but the rooms were poor, and the facility in general was tired and poorly designed. Given that you pay $175-$250/ person/ day, in the context of a non-touristy area SE Asia, the value was questionable.

Staff: lead by an energetic chief, the staff were exceptional - engaged, helpful, energetic and working 17 hours a day.
Food: 3 great meals a day, with enough choice to keep everyone happy.
Activities: we all really enjoyed the activities, from sailing; adventure course (currently a bit small); trapeze school (arguably CM's major differentiator in SE Asia) etc etc.
Facilities: CM is quite remote, located near Kuantan, on the east coast of Malaysia, about 4 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, or 6-7 hours drive from Singapore. There is very little tourism in the area. The main area of the resort is built around a large swimming pool, which can get very crowded. Despite the beautiful coast line, the architect who designed the building, built it inward looking around the pool rather than facing out onto the ocean. The rooms are spread out in a linear design parallel with the beach, though views are limited. There is a new "adults only" section, a short "train" trip or walk away (about 1 km), which is fantastic.
Rooms: the rooms appear to be about 40 years old, and are very basic - would rate them as 2 star.

Verdict: our first impressions, walking past the over crowded pool to our rooms was sobering, but we had a really good time on the whole. When we compare it to the Sheraton Lombok, where we ended up paying about half the price (including food, drinks) but no activities, I really question the value "for us".

Ultimately, the place was almost full, with many repeat customers and tends to get great reviews (here), so others probably disagree with our assessment!

Room tip: Blocks nearer the gate (G-M??) appear newer

Cherating Beach may not be 5-star, but if you are looking for a fun and relaxing place to take the kids with zero concerns about feeding the "I'm hungry/I'm thirsty" hordes. The food is AMAZING, the staff are friendly, and there is no compulsion to get involved in anything if you choose to simply sit poolside and relax.... value for money and zero hassles.....

Great location on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, very convenient drive from Singapore. Beach and the water is ok, but at night you can go on firefly tours and sea turtle tours. Very relaxing to stay here.

This is my fifth visit here, since my first way back in 1989. It was my 14th Club Med visit and I would have to say it is one of my favorite villages.

Let's start with the bad. Yes the rooms are old, however, they are still comfortable and fine for a club med. They are due for refurbishment next year. My gripe was the attack on my legs and body by bed bugs. Perhaps a more rigorous cleaning of sheets and mattresses.

Now that's out of the way lets get to the good stuff. The village is stunning. Set in tropical rain forest and jungle. With heaps of assorted exotic wildlife. The club is a good size, it was full while we were there but never felt like it. You could always get a lounger by the pool or a table at the restaurant.

The Zen pool is stunning and the beach area there is also beautiful. My kids preferred the Mini Club here to that in Bali last year. There was a greater range of activities and in general they seemed to get through more of them. My kids also preferred this pool to the boring one at Bali.

The food was typical Club Med, with some dishes better than others. Same with the bar, as they free pore it depended on who made your drinks to how much booze you got.

All the staff and GO's were fantastic and I especially like the way the Chief De Village Lydia personally greeted us on our arrival late at night.

In all a great village (in my opinion, better than Bali), a great holiday and I still don't think you can beat Club Med when it comes to family resort holidays.

Dear Hot_Dots,

It was a pleasure welcoming you back for the fifth time to Club Med Cherating Beach! We are so pleased to hear that you and your kids had an excellent time. We do appreciate your feedback on the rooms and we are pretty certain the bugs you were referring to may have been sand flies that sometimes can enter the room if doors are left open a little longer in the evenings. We will share your feedback with our housekeeping team to make sure we are constantly doing the utmost to provide clean and comfortable rooms in our jungle paradise. We are happy your kids loved the Mini Club and pool and we are looking forward to a sixth visit in the near future!

Sincerely,
The Club Med Cherating Team
