“Nice hotel in great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2012

We stayed in the Astron for two weeks in July..We were on the 2nd floor overlooking the refurbished swimming pool area and very nice it is too.
The hotel and it's staff are very hospitable and very helpful and as the title suggests commands a very good position by the harbour and is very central for all of Kos Town's amenities.
It's a bed and breakfast establishment and this can be taken either inside or out on the terrace and is adequate for this 3 star rated hotel.
The rooms could probably do with a little bit of updating but it's no downside.
My only grief staying here was the time of year...It does tend to attract the younger element in July/August and being young they like to party in the rooms/pool area most of the afternoon and well into the night...Fine for them but 5.00 in the morning you really do not want waking to the sounds of what you used to get up to when being their age.(Oh! to be young)
So if you do not want this i can really recommend a stay here outside these times when it's a little more sedate..May/September i would suggest...Otherwise a great little hotel.
I can really recommend the 3 island boat trip and especially on "The Katerina" they do not hassle you to book and they really do give you a day to remember.
Also a couple of Tavernas that should not be missed. Evdokia (Mummy's Cooking) in Bouboulinas 13..a 10 minute walk from the hotel Ilios will look after all your needs and surely is one of the best local Taverna's in Kos Town.(Only fresh produce used) and Kalymnos Taverna,
another short walk in the opposite direction from the hotel. The hotel reception will kindly point you in the right direction.
Kos Town is very vibrant and definately for the young at heart in the summer months.

After a travel agent put us into a very ordinary hotel in Bodrum (to be fair it was not the agent's first preference) we were very leery about where we had been booked in Kos. As it turned out we could not have been happier.

Comfortable, quiet room (facing the pool, not the harbour/street), cheery staff and a nice terrace bar at the front from which to watch life go by. The pool looked nice but we didn't try it.

The chap who works mornings at the reception desk arranged car hire for us and that proved to be easy and painless. It was cheap, the car was brought to the hotel and when we finished with it we just parked it outside and left the keys at reception. Excellent.

The location is beaut but it should be noted that if you arrive by ferry (as most do I imagine) you have an unavoidable 2 or 300 metre walk before you can get a taxi. You then have to decide whether to take a very short taxi ride (maybe 500 metres) or walk. It's a lovely walk around the harbour but on a hot day and carrying luggage we wondered whether a taxi would have been a better idea. This is not, of course, any reflection on the hotel.

Room Tip: Apparently all rooms have a balcony and I'm sure the ones facing the harbour have a nice view. B...

Our second visit to the Astron, the only hotel in Kos Town which we have returned to during our many holidays on the island. And were pleasantly surprised with the improvements there. Brand new swimming pool and newly developed gardens, and refurbishments taking place in the rooms, which will enhance holidaymakers' stay when completed. The breakfast buffet area needs to be enlarged, and modernised, but the view over the harbour while eating your breakfast makes up for the inconvenience. The location is ideal, within easy reach of all facilities in this fascinating resort. But most of all, we must mention the wonderful, friendly welcome and attention we received there by Katrina, at the pool cafe/bar, Natasha the bar attendant, and all the reception, and other staff. Thank you all for making our two weeks' stay at the Astron so pleasant. God willing, we shall return next year!

We stayed at the Astron on Kos Town Harbour from 23 - 30th May. This was our second time in Kos Town and we wanted to be on the harbour and within walking distance of the beach at the Old River (see Restaurants in Kos Town) and the Old Town. Kos Town is about 20 mins in a taxi from the Airport (34 Euros), checking into the hotel was very quick and they gave us a warm welcome. We had a Junior Suite (for myself and hubby). All Junior Suites have a harbour view which was stunning.

The suite (Room 106) was large with a living area with a sofa bed as you went in with a small table and 2 chairs and some kitchen cupboards and a kettle (we asked for that when we booked). Then came the bathroom which was perfectly sized for a holiday and had a hairdryer and towel holders and a useful long shelf. The only slight issue was the shower which wasn't very powerful but didn't bother us. Lots of wardrobe space and hangers and drawers and shelves plus 2 bedside cabinets and a desk with a stool and mirror acting as a dressing table and a safe (get the key from reception). The living/sleeping area is all carpeted. Balcony was not huge but not small either and was fine for two chairs, table and the two of us. The front of the hotel (harbour side) gets the sun in the morning as the sunsets over Kalymnos which is North West of Kos (I think!).

Breakfast was fine, nothing special but usual for Greek hotels with quite a lot of variety. The lady at the bar where we had a drink or two was very friendly and so helpful when I accidently cut my foot (my fault!!) - she really looked after me. In fact everyone was very friendly and helpful and although we tend to be quite low maintenance guests I don't think anything would have been too much trouble.

Overall I would say that it is a 3 star hotel by Greek standards and wouldn't hesitate to stay again. It's true that the room perhaps was a little dated but was kept very clean daily and we certainly had no grumbles. The beds as other reviewers have said are rather hard but we both slept very well and once the balcony door was closed heard nothing from the harbour front outside.

Location: I can't fault it. 2 minutes walk to the boats if you are taking a day trip (ie 3 islands). Less than 200 metres to the nearest part of the beach although we always went further west from the Town which was a leisurely 10 mins walk. The view sells it though - I'm missing the harbour watching already.

The pool has recently been renovated and is huge (bigger than many photos on the internet) and also has a whirlpool. Although we aren't really pool people (just popped in for a quick swim occassionally). In fact I understand that they will be slowly upgrading other parts of the hotel including the rooms.

Like any hotel you get what you pay for and my advice would be pay a little more for the bigger rooms but as a base it's fantastic.

I'll be back next year!!!!

Room Tip: Personally the harbour views at the front are best but the ones at the back get the sun at the end o...

I have visited this hotel twice in the last month, once over the Greek Easter and I don't know what the first reviewer was complaining about. This hotel does not pretend to be the Paris or London Ritz, it is a very good 3 star hotel. All the personal that I met could not have been more helpful. The location could not be bettered and the breakfast was buffet style with eggs, (boiled or fried), sausages, cheeses, ham, olives, cereals and very good coffee and as much as you wanted. I don't eat as good a breakfast at home.

That said, the beds were a bit lumpy but on my second visit there was lots of work going on in the rooms, with all new beds being delivered and a lot of work going on around the pool area.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for young couples, business people and anyone who just wanted to enjoy the fantastic location. Go on, try it and enjoy it.

Room Tip: Spectacular views of the harbour and the castle from the rooms on the front

I cannot believe some of the reviews about this hotel that I've read. I stayed at this hotel with my wife for 2 weeks Aug/Sept 2011. The rooms were tiny. The beds and bedding were a disgrace. The balconies lacked privacy and the views from them was of run down appartment blocks or a tall grey wall which was the outside wall to a noisy night club., unless of course you paid a (hefty) upgrade for a sea view. The view from the front was spectacular, however, looking directly over the harbour. (this was the only saving grace for this dismal place) The bathroom in our room was aweful and stuck together with gunge and super glue- it too was filthy despite the efforts of the maid. It would have been condemned here.ALL the staff ,apart from the male receptionist, were unhelpful and off-hand. At first sight the breakfast was good, but we had sour milk twicw and a bad egg on another day, This was our 20th visit to Kos. If it had been our first then we would never have been back . Take my advice. The people of Kos are generally the most friendly I have ever met, and I have never been so disappointed as this. We have stayed in 5 other hotels there and they are all much much better than this!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea-view, but it will cost a hefty surcharge

We spent 2 nights in Kos on our way to Kalymnos and decided to try the Astron due to it's convenient position right on the harbour.
First up - the view at the front of the hotel is beautiful. The pretty harbour is spread out directly in front of the entrance. The rooms, however, are rather dated and look like they haven't been decorated since the 1980's. The bed was the most uncomforatble I have ever slept in. To add insult to injury, the lumpy mattress had a rubber sheet tied over it which rustled and generated an unpleasant sticky sensation. Needless to say this was quickly removed!!
Breakfast was ok - an adequate spread of cereals, cooked buffet and cold meats.
The pool area at the rear of the hotel was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Overall, it was fine for a couple of nights but I wouldn't want to spend more than a short break here.

Room Tip: If you can get a room overlooking the harbour the view might make up for the room decor
