A unique Swiss-like experience in the middle of Portugal! After the rush of Porto, we really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the mountains at this fabulous family-run hotel. The restaurant menu was a nice change after having had to do with tapas for two weeks, with a very good vegetarian platter for a change. Also try the big humps of local Serra cheese which they serve. Excellent! The local cheese-maker passing the hotel with his herd of goats made us thought we were in the Alps! After watching the Portugal against Greece match in the 2012 Soccer Euro Cup with Rafael and his family, my husband is now an equally passionate supporter of Portugal... obviously only until they meet up with Bafana Bafana!. Next time we hope to stay longer, to explore the beautiful surroundings a bit more. Wish we could retire here. Stephan, Bruce, Christa & Madelaine - South Africa

During the previous five years we have travelled by road from Santander to our holiday home in the Algarve, and return trip, on two occasions each year. We are so pleased that on one of our first return trips we found the Albergaria Berne, in Manteigas. Always a smiling face and time for a conversation from Marcus and Rafael, who by the way speak exellent English and Mum and Dad who run the kitchen.. Although we are travelling when we stay we often spend two nights as there is always something to see in this beautiful area of Portugal.
We will be back in Nov. 12. to be greated as we walk from the car park with a G & T. and the smiling faces. The rooms, restaurant and all other areas of the hotel are first class.

Room Tip: Do not ask for room 208. We always request this!!

Manteigas is beautiful, and what better place to enjoy it from than the Albergaria Berne. It can be difficult to get to Manteigas without a car, but the bus runs Monday - Friday, and it is worth the extra effort to get here! The room and bathroom were immaculate, with every desired comfort. The bed here was the best I've slept in since I've been in Europe. The view from the balcony in itself is priceless. The water pressure in the shower is heavenly especially after a long, cold day of hiking. The Martins are extremely friendly, funny, and helpful. They are always available and willing to have an in depth conversation, or supply helpful tips or jokes. Every dish served tastes like it was cooked with love, care, years of experience, and the highest quality ingredients. I recommend the roast kid and the cod and cornbread, but everything is mouth watering and delicious. The Martins also put on the finest included breakfast spread I have seen in 17 years of traveling. They give you a feast to prepare for a day of adventure or relaxation!

You must stay here! Not only is it the best value for the money, but it is an amazing experience that you should not miss. Staying at the Berne elevated Manteigas from a beautiful mountain town to a magical destination that I began missing even before I left. I'm already trying to plan the next time I can visit!!!

The Albergaria Berne is a family run hotel just outside the village center of Manteiges.
It is close to the river and one hears the water flowing downwards: realxing..
The food is excellent, the rooms nice. the bathroom was a bit tight but adequate.
The atmosphere is typically Swiss and mingles nicely with the surroundings.
It is a great hotel to venture the Serra da Estrella area that offers huge natural treasures to discover.
The price/quality is very good.
We might have had a bad day, but the staff was rather distinct and formal.

I spent 2 weeks (roughly speaking) at this B&B and I absolutely recommend it!
Starting with the rooms, they're nice and comfy and they all have balconies: some facing the pool, some facing the valley (great view at night!). The bathrooms are a bit outdated (they're going to have some work done next year) but they're totally functional and clean.
The food is definitely a plus on this B&B. The breakfast includes great orange juice, peach and cherry jam, fresh fruit, breads, a great honey and walnut cake, besides all the other usual things. The restaurant is a great option to try both the regional specialities and the international cuisine (although more French/Swiss influenced), like fish meunière, fondue, raclette and so on. In the dessert section you'll find regional specialities - all of them strongly advisable! A note about water: when you ask for a bottle of water to go with your meal you'll get a black glass bottle with the word 'Glaciar' on it. This has been rated as the world's 3rd best bottled water and the company that sells it is located... right there in Manteigas! When you have a sip you feel like you're drinking fresh fountain water! Amazing! Another note about entrées: instead of the usual butter/paté/bread trio you'll find in Portuguese restaurants they'll bring to the table some of the nice local bread and a small dish with sliced raw garlic and locally produced olive oil. My advice is: take a bit of bread, dip it in the olive oil, make sure you have a bit of garlic on your bread and just enjoy the wonderful flavours. Don't forget to brush your teeth, though! ;-)
The staff is amazing: the Albergaria is run by a family and, truth be told, they make you feel at home. The brothers are very very funny and always helpful, whether you need a pen, directions or a vegetarian dinner. In fact, I remember once being in the restaurant and noticing some very tasty looking mushrooms on someone else's plate and, cutting a long story short, only later realized they had that dish prepared specifically for a vegetarian customer.
The Albergaria also has a pool (with a small kiddie pool) where you can relax and listen to the birdies.
The location is just great, being in the valley of the mountain: you're about 30 minutes away from other places, like Seia, Belmonte and a lot of sight seeing possibilities.

I have been travelling for a while, and I have to tell you that what I found in Albergaria Berne is one of the best value for money you could possible find around the area, and considering we are discussing a whole mountain (Serra da Estrela), that says a lot.
Located in the center on the mountain range, in the valley of the river Zêzere,
on the small town of Manteigas, Albergaria Berne presents itself has a top Bed & Breakfast. The place is very clean, tastefully decorated, with two road accesses and a large and a small parking lot. The responsible people give you all the attention you may require, and strive to satisfy all your needs, may they be on the room side, the lounge side, the pool side or the restaurant side. The view of the Valley is breath-taking from the bedrooms, which are fully functional, with a bathroom which, although not with the same color as the rooms (high contrast actually), presents itself throughly clean everyday, towels being changed everyday and all the comodities you would wish at this grade, and on a great plus side, the hot water not only does not fail (something which happened a lot on a 3 star hotel I was in), it might burn you if you are not careful, brilliant when we are discussing a whole year Bed & Breakfast. The pool is great, has a marvellous view of the valley and is complete with a Collie and a cat which will eat any cheese bits you might get there for the afternoon. Sometimes the water has some bugs which keep falling in there, but the team can't be there taking bugs out of the water all
the time, that's what you get from being in a mountain, and it's not that problematic as a whole. The TV on the bedroom has the normal channels, no fancy stuff, and the bedrooms have a great balcony where you can watch the view while confortably nibbling on some regional treats and a delicious portuguese wine or the 3rd best water in the world, GLACIAR DIAMOND. The restaurant serves regional food, some with a twist, all of them delicious to try at all times, and if you need something done which is not on the menu, they will attempt to give you what you desire. The breakfast is one of the best I have seen at this level, maybe they could improve on diet type products, but nothing of major importance. Finally, i have to leave a note for the Albergaria Berne employees which strive to get all the nationalities which appear on the B&B together and having a good time, trying to make everyone feel at home, and that is not easy at all. Having stayed 10 days on this B&B, I saw they take the necessary measures to make everyone from every place in the world confortable where they are. They deserve recognition
for that, and for the great value for money that Albergaria Berne presents to the customer. My advice is to go there and enjoy what they have to offer, and use it as "base of operations" for some nice holidays exploring what the mountain has for you.

I cannot fault the Abergaria Berne.....I just wish that I had found it earler as we have stayed in many far less comfortable places in the Serra da Estela region.
The food and the service at dinner were both exceptionally good and all at such very reasonable rates
