We were in our route to Serra da Estrela which was very hard since the hill is full of tiny curves and took us more time than we expected to arrive. So we got there about 19:00h and we left the followed morning. The weather was extremely cold up there, seems to be a nice skiing spot.

Stayed from Sunday to Monday so hotel was almost empty. It was a nice cozy well heated hotel with very nice views of the mountains and the town of Manteigas.
We asked for a double room + baby cot and got a nice room with view to Manteigas (we stayed in room 209). Room was very clean and comfortable. Bed was at least 1,9 m and there was a mini bar, a small fridge and TV with some children and international channels. There was a large wardrobe and large bathroom.
Hotel itself was also very cozy and nicely heated. It had a restaurant overlooking Manteigas which was also the breakfast area.
There was a sitting area in the hotel with fireplace and tv and another fireplace and pool table in the bar area (I can imagine the nice effect if these were lit up but since there were hardly any guests I suppose they didn’t feel it was necessary to light up the fireplaces which was somewhat disappointing although understanding). There were also some card and domino tables in the bar area. Downstairs there was also a small section for kids (with some games, toys for them to play with).
Staff was very pleasant and helpful.
Breakfast had all the basics (didn’t see any eggs), bread, cereals, ham, cheese, jams, honey, Queijo da Serra, etc. There was a toaster.
There was a free outside parking lot.
Although the hotel is supposed to be in Manteigas it is actually 13 km drive up the mountains (taking between 20 – 30 min). Road is safe although you do have to be careful and drive slowly. Apparently there is a shortcut (only 6 km from Manteigas to the Hotel) but locals advised us it was an unsafe and narrow road although recently paved.
Driving to the hotel was a bit tiring (we came from Coimbra). It is advisable to arrive during the day and especially in good conditions (avoid rainy and snowy days to drive).
Driving to the “Torre” and Vodafone Ski hills takes about an hour via Sabugueiro (if you want to drive safely and want to avoid other passengers from getting sick) so maybe Covilhã or Penhas da Saúde are better/faster options if you solely want to ski.
Overall hotel is very cozy, romantic and pleasant…great if you just want to relax and stay put or drive around Serra da Estrela. Beware that there is nothing in the proximity and the closest to anything is Manteigas (13 km downhill).
The only negative comment is that it would have been nice seeing those fireplaces lit up in the bar/sitting area so overall I must say it is considerably expensive (125 €/night through booking.com) to not see this hotel at it’s best.

My husband and I toured through Portugal in October 2011 for our honeymoon, and stayed in 5 or 6 hotels throughout the course of the trip. This pousada was my absolute favorite of any of the places we stayed. The staff and the service they provided were absolutely top-notch, and the location and surroundings were unique and relaxing.

The on-site restaurant is phenomenal, and we ate there each day for every meal. This is the perfect place to stay if you are looking for relaxation and a slow pace. The location is somewhat difficult to access (particularly at night), but once you get there you will not be in any hurry to leave. There are hiking paths nearby (make sure you bring a detailed map), and this is also a wonderful place to sit by a fire and read. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and some of them have balconies over-looking the mountains. The view from the dining room is gorgeous at all times of the day. I cannot recommend this pousada highly enough -- I would love to go back and stay for a longer period of time.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have balconies, so if you want one, ask about this when you book your reservation.

We stayed here for one night before heading to the Douro River for a weeks stay. It was certainly a tortuous drive to the Pousada but fortunately the weather was good and the views are excellent both from the rooms and from the perfectly-located dining-room. We had already decided to have dinner in the dining room but it would have been a long drive to town. Food and service for breakfast and dinner were exemplary,

The main attraction of the Pousads of Portugal is the uniqueness of the view or the pousada's building. So, if staying in a special place is not your main goal, other cheaper hotels in Manteigas will fulfil your expectation better. The Manteigas Pousada offers a fascinating view over Manteigas and the Zezere valley and a special rock-stone made building, as well as a special atmosphere, and for that the pousada totally fulfilled our expectations.
The large and spacious cozy room includes sitting areas, queen-sized bed and comfortable and spacious bathroom.
Staff was courteous and provided help concerning the option of touring the area (yet, for those interested in exploring/hiking the area I highly recommend the Manteigas' Turismo where they will provide you with a "tailored" trip according to your expectations/abilities).
The breakfast was rich and tasty, on the other hand the dinner (not included in the basic hotel's rate) was very disappointing. I've ordered steak that was hard to chew and not tasty at all while my spouse ordered a vegetarian dish that was not more than OK. Some deserts - provided in a buffet style - where missing. Certainly not a dinner typical for a four start hotel.
Overall, we enjoyed staying in this pousada, and I would recommend others to stay there as well.

Too far up the mountain. Nothing up there, unless, you have one of the small terraces, which we didn't. I am sure those are more expensive. There is a trail that you could walk. sort of pleasant, but would be 5 hour walk of the same scenery. decor was charming (old - lodge type),nothing special. rooms and linens were immaculate (my #1 requirement) beds were comfortable. view out of the window, but had to stand to see it. For us, there was no where to sit in the entire place for an enjoyable view. The restaurant was atrocious. My husband ordered the chicken curry which he liked, but the rice was hard and cold. Overpriced. The salad dressing: balsamic vinegar only on lettuce and tomato). I ordered fusilli pasta w/ tomato sauce and hard-boiled egg. I received bowtie pasta, a dollop of what tasted like ketchup, and milk (not even heavy cream) Are you kidding me - who doesnt know how to make pasta sauce. It was sickening. Free breakfast was excellent as was service (for dinner also) If you think you can avoid eating here and eat in Manteigas instead, forget it. We were served old cheese and unchewable salami at one of the restaurants there. .

Room Tip: Spend more money.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to post your opinion about Pousada de Manteigas. We have truly appreciated the comments regarding the décor, rooms, breakfast and service in general. We sincerely regret that we weren’t able to meet your expectations and apologize for the dinner experience.
The restaurants of Pousadas de Portugal are known for their superior quality and refined ambiance, so this was truly disappointing to know and the Regional Manager has already been informed of this situation.
Pousada de Manteigas is located on the top of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park with a beautiful scenic view over the river Zêzere Valley. We believe that makes it the perfect place for a calm getaway. Guests can either go for a walk, relax by the fireplace, practice winter sports during the season or have a refreshing swim in the Summer, in the natural lagoons, among other activities. The Pousada has 21 rooms and some have view of the surroundings.
An interesting characteristic: The Pousada was entirely built with stone of the region.
Kind Regards

The pousada itself is great. Location is perfect. It far from everything - it was took us about 30 minute driving from nearby Manteigas at evening and if you afraind of mountain driving, it's not your place. But the silence and the amazing mountain air pays back. The design is not changes from the 40s, when hotel was opened, but there is a fun in it. We had a big room with the amazing view to the Zizere valley and Manteigas. Room is clean and nice. Bed is huge and very comfortable. TV selection is funny, without almost any english language channels, but who needs TV at such place. Dinner at restaraunt was perfect and breakfast was nice. Only just two drawbacks - in additon to remote location, the place does not have any Internet at all, even no computer to use. And the second - we booked it thru Pousadas de Portugal website and no information was provided about breakfast, so suddenly when we checked out we were told it's not included in price. So, I advice you to check this when you check-in to avoid unpleasant news.
