Stayed from Sunday to Monday so hotel was almost empty. It was a nice cozy well heated hotel with very nice views of the mountains and the town of Manteigas.
We asked for a double room + baby cot and got a nice room with view to Manteigas (we stayed in room 209). Room was very clean and comfortable. Bed was at least 1,9 m and there was a mini bar, a small fridge and TV with some children and international channels. There was a large wardrobe and large bathroom.
Hotel itself was also very cozy and nicely heated. It had a restaurant overlooking Manteigas which was also the breakfast area.
There was a sitting area in the hotel with fireplace and tv and another fireplace and pool table in the bar area (I can imagine the nice effect if these were lit up but since there were hardly any guests I suppose they didn’t feel it was necessary to light up the fireplaces which was somewhat disappointing although understanding). There were also some card and domino tables in the bar area. Downstairs there was also a small section for kids (with some games, toys for them to play with).
Staff was very pleasant and helpful.
Breakfast had all the basics (didn’t see any eggs), bread, cereals, ham, cheese, jams, honey, Queijo da Serra, etc. There was a toaster.
There was a free outside parking lot.
Although the hotel is supposed to be in Manteigas it is actually 13 km drive up the mountains (taking between 20 – 30 min). Road is safe although you do have to be careful and drive slowly. Apparently there is a shortcut (only 6 km from Manteigas to the Hotel) but locals advised us it was an unsafe and narrow road although recently paved.
Driving to the hotel was a bit tiring (we came from Coimbra). It is advisable to arrive during the day and especially in good conditions (avoid rainy and snowy days to drive).
Driving to the “Torre” and Vodafone Ski hills takes about an hour via Sabugueiro (if you want to drive safely and want to avoid other passengers from getting sick) so maybe Covilhã or Penhas da Saúde are better/faster options if you solely want to ski.
Overall hotel is very cozy, romantic and pleasant…great if you just want to relax and stay put or drive around Serra da Estrela. Beware that there is nothing in the proximity and the closest to anything is Manteigas (13 km downhill).
The only negative comment is that it would have been nice seeing those fireplaces lit up in the bar/sitting area so overall I must say it is considerably expensive (125 €/night through booking.com) to not see this hotel at it’s best.
