“Comfort and a good welcome in an 18th C Hall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2012

Manteigas is in a beautiful high setting in the mountains and is an excellent base for hiking. The town itself is rather simple with limited facilities - but good enough for all that.
Casa das Obras is an ancient noble family house and has been in the same family for generations. It is beautifully and comprehensively furnished with all manner of family heirlooms, old pictures and furniture. There is a big games room with pool and chess and a large sitting room with a log fire heating the room and the hot water.
We had a good sized bedroom and a very comforatble bed. The bathroom was a little cramped and the fittings, while not as old as the house, looked as if they had served at least one generation. Still, bathtubs will last for ever!
The one drawback we found was the limited quantity of hot water, so on a chilly March morning there was enough to shave with but not enough to shower or use the bath tub. That said, the previous evening we both were able to have warm showers.
The lady in charge - I guess the owner or her daughter - was the perfect hostess, providing us with cookies and tea on arrival as well as a bowl of sugared figs and otherwise ensuring we had everything we needed.
We were the only people staying there at the time but even so, the breakfast was excellent and with a large choice. It was served at just about the largest table I have ever dined at, with room for seating around 20 people. I would highly recomment Casa das Obras.

First you get impressed by the House (Casa) - comfortable, well kept, elegant - then you meet the people (owner and the staff, of course) - nice and warm, discreet and efficient. You stay there for a few days and you feel that you belong there! This is the kind of place you will never forget.
I hope I will be back soon!

This place is fantastically atmospheric. We visited in September, but I imagine it is even better on a cold winter's night. The drive through the mountains to get here is beautiful and dramatic from any direction. Sadly. Manteigas itself is pretty underwhelming, but if you plan to hike during the day, then this is the perfect place to return to. Breakfast is served in a beautiful room upstairs and there as some fun communal rooms downstairs - lounge, billiards room and secret bar hidden under the stairs. The only let down was the room itself which was dark and slightly fogeyish, but otherwise clean and comfortable. Bathrooms also could do with a makeover.

I can't say enough positive things about Casa Obras. Firstly it's 300 years old and filled with unique paintings, artifacts and frescoed ceilings from that period. Our immaculate room was very large with a beautiful bed and frescoed ceiling over head. The breakfasts were absolutely amazing and the best we had during our entire trip over Europe. Homemade cakes and breads, several kinds of local cheese, salamis, fresh fruit salad, eggs etc all enjoyed in the upstairs dining room with beautiful freshly picked roses. Casa Obras is cool due to it's thick stone walls so it was lovely while we were there in Spring yet I imagine wonderfully cosy in winter with the lounge, fireplace, pool table and rustic "mountain lodge" type atmosphere. The host was so accommodating and did everything to ensure her guests were happy and comfortable. We would love to stay here again!

Loved the Casa. Old rooms, good value, with friendly family serving breakfast in a wonderful old dining room. The lounge and games room were also a great place to have a drink and relax (although you'll have to find the shop in town for a drink; what bars there are are very gloomy affairs). Worth paying ten euros extra for a suite as the rooms aren't large.
The Serra da Estrela was also lovely to drive around. However, in early June there is very little to entertain you in Manteigas which isn't such a charming village as many of the others in the Serra. The recommended restaurants were closed, one local restaurant served us truly awful food, so we resorted to the local pizza place in the main town square which was much more fun.
There's a confusion between the local tourist office and national park office. In any case, neither of them can give you maps, there aren't any to buy and there are no markings on any walking trails (should they indeed exist). Do not come here expecting to find a good walk without a lot of frustration! The valley heading up to the pass out of town is beautiful. It's worth walking up, but I suggest you drive up first, spec out the terrain and then drive back to find the starting point. Otherwise, drive up to the local waterfalls and take a right on the way up following the browen sign to mountains and Serra. We got above the tress and had a lovely walk across the rugged mountain tops over dirt tracks.
I'd recommend the hotel, but sadly not a trip to Manteigas in summer unless they work a lot harder on local facilities and walking trails.

This place has an immediate “wow” factor. As previous reviewers have noted, it's a 3-400 year old stone manor house.. The outside walls are a meter thick; the windows were built with recessed shutters; there is a stone staircase, a full-sized pool table, a cavern-like bar with a fridge you can use to chill your beer or keep fruit fresh, and antiques all around you.

What's more, the owners and staff have made this wonderful old building into a really excellent guest house. You get the run of the place, including the swimming pool and the private garden. You get a really good breakfast buffet, beautifully presented. You eat at a communal table, set in the former family dining room. This is all great fun.

Our room was big, spotlessly clean, and had a great bathroom with a powerful shower. There's no air conditioning, but we had hot days, and the house stayed cool. I doubt that lack of aircon would ever be an issue here.

One very minor issue was that the house's free wifi network cannot penetrate the thick stone walls, so you need to go up to the breakfast room to get on line. Even there it's a bit erratic, and the broadband connection was also prone to collapse during our stay. Something to do with the general remoteness of Manteigas, maybe?

The house is a short, steep walk up from the main streets of the village. Arriving by car you'll find that it's well signposted, but be prepared for a very steep final 10 meters!

I would think that Casa das Obras is pretty near unique in its combination of a jaw-dropping building with great service and a realistic price. It also has a good write-up in the Lonely Planet and is therefore one of the few such places that hasn't let its standards slip.

You really must stay here if you are thinking of spending time anywhere near Manteigas; Casa das Obras will not disappoint.

This place was everything I'd hoped for and more. It's located in a huge old manor house in the middle of town, and every effort has been made to preserve the look and feel of what it once was. All the furniture is genuine, the art (lots of it religious,) the creaky bowed wooden floors... fantastic. We didn't see any other guests the whole time we were there, so it was like we had the whole thing to ourselves. Really made us feel like we were living the lives of nobility!

Definitely ask for the upstairs suite -- amazing views out over the valley, and very light. Some of the doubles on the ground floor looked a little dark.

Breakfast was extensive and fantastic, served in the old dining room.

Best part of all was the household dog, Beiras, a Portuguese mountain dog that is massive and very very sweet. Make sure to say hi to him -- he lives in the gated garden opposite the hotel!

We had dinner at a restaurant down the street that the owner recommended, which is in back of a little bar. It didn't look like much, but had amazing food and excellent views of the sunset. Make sure you go there!

Highly recommended.
