“Boutique hotel in the beautiful Serra da Estrela”
Reviewed January 5, 2014

Perfectly decorated and incorporated to the Serra da Estrela region this boutique hotel is a very good choice if you want to relax and stay away from the noise. Staff is very kind and always ready to help. The rooms are cosy and nicely decorated but a bit small. You don't have a place to open your luggage but the floor. Bathroom is also small and the shower is separated by a glass from the room. Not a good idea if one wants to sleep a bit more than the other. The landscape is amazing but you don't have many options if the weather is not good. No fit centre available but there is a nice and pricy spa.
The food is excellent. And you can have tea, coffee, cakes, etc any time of the day with no cost.

Set in the beautiful and dramatic landscape of Penhas Douradas, the design of the hotel makes the perfect link to the surrounding nature. Every detail in the hotel seems to have been studied and the design is really good. A very cosy place!
To recommend: the nature walks. You receive the walk description allowing you to discover the nature and history of the area. Weather allowing, it's possible to bring a picnic with you. We did a four hours (easy) walk and loved it.
Good food, good service, rooms on the small side.

I decided to book this hotel for a good romantic gateway with dinner included and a swim in the indoor swimming pool.
We went on late November so keep in mind that there was no snow, which could affect the outlook of things. In any case I'll try to keep my review as impartial and simple as possible and considering the hotel, the surroundings, amenities and price.
Beautiful landscape, amazing views, excellent meal at dinner (my regards to the chef), good variety at breakfast, cosy sitting rooms and dining room, good complementary tea and selections of DVD's to watch. Very nice staff in general except the lady that was on reception when we checked out... Received and answered two calls giving priority to the telephone while we were there waiting..

Very small room, one bed, one chair and one head side table and not room for more (please note we didn't book the "cheapest" room but the room "Varandas") and very poor decorated, the smallest bathroom, I actually couldn't turn easily around on the shower.. the temperature of the indoor swimming pool was low and not proper for a jacuzzi (although it had jets setup to) so you couldn't actually stay for long or relax cause you would have to swim around to keep warm.. Got so cold that I had to reheat in the shower to get my body temperature up again. But Amazing view from the pool.. In the summer must be amazing.

Overall I think it's to expensive, it doesn't have a good quality/price relation. Would not stay there again for that price. Also not good if you're looking for a place to swim and jacuzzi.. Definitely not for the SPA experience. Good place if you want to admire the views, stay in the living rooms watching tv or videos, read a book, because of the isolation feel.

I stayed 3 nights at Casa das Penhas Douradas and I felt I don't wanted to leave...Charming hotel, lovely staff, cosy rooms, amazing views, and a very peaceful and quiet spot; marvelous spa with a unique pool with a view to the mountains I won't forget. the food...oh the food is so so good!
At Casa das Penhas Douradas we want to stay there from the morning to the end of the day because we feel really at home...
a very good place for sports - you can leave and return to the house running through a 10km unforgettable course at 1.500mts high...it was cold but I felt really inside the nature.
I'm sure I'll return and I recommend it to everyone

Room Tip: all the rooms are wonderful;

Loved it. Scandinavian design at its best, nice library, cosy lounges. We had a ground floor room, with a terrace - you can go out and relax in a bean bag chair or hammock under the pines, with an amazing view of the plateau. Ah, and the pool with glass walls - must look even better in winter:)
Don't miss the dinners - really worth it. Tea and homemade pies served in the afternoon. And the staff! When our kid caught a cold, the owner himself went to the pharmacy in Manteigas to get what we needed.

Also - it's a short walk from a mountain lake.

The wool blankets, pillowcases and other decor comes from an old factory in Manteigas, now run by the hotel's owner. Designs are quite modern, but nearly all the equipment is from the old days (Joao was so kind to show me around the factory).

Room Tip: Balcony rooms are more spacious, but I'd still prefer a terrace room - it's lovely to have y...

We wanted to see another side of Portugal and decided on some walking in the Serra da Estrala. This decision was easy as staying in the Casa das Penhas is something to look forward to. The staff here are genuinely happy to help. There is a smashing pool and sauna, and very detailed and well marked routes for day hikes.

Our thanks to everyone and to the enthusiastic chef Bruno too.

After reading the reviews here on tripadvisor we decided to stay here for 4 nights. We were looking for a nice designed hotel which is reasonable priced and could offer us a relaxing vacation.

The design is danish, vintage, contemporary and warm. besides the rooms there are several livingrooms where you can watch dvd's by the fireplace - just excellent. Being a perfectionist i think they could do an even better job with the interior decoraction as at some place it lookst a bit like it is just put together without giving it enought thought. The rooms are a little small but was fine for us.

Every night there is a 5 course dinner offered for 30 euro per person. This food is amazing. Living in Amsterdam and travelling constantly all over the world, I am not lying when I say that this chef is doing an amazing job and is able to create a new, spectacular menu, every night. We enjoyed this a lot. After the 5 courses you can take cheese and wine and enjoy it in one of the livingrooms or in the restaurant. Do notice that if you do not take 5 courses but refuse to take one (I did this one night with the desert as it was too much for me) you have to pay seperately for all courses and it is more expensive than 30 euro. This was a bit tricky and not very hospitable in my opnion.

During the 3 days we were there, we were there we did the walking trails and it was truly amazing, so beautiful and so relaxing. The hotel also offers picknick backpacks to bring along.

The staff at this hotel is simply amazing. From the girls doing reception and restaurant in the evening to the "older girls" who do the cleaning and breakfast buffet in the morning, they were all just very very sweet, caring, warmhearted and sincere! They made our stay so special.

The owner also walks around the hotel, i experienced him as less sympathic and sincere than the rest of the staff to be honest. From a hotel manager i expect a welcoming and friendly approach and not a more in the background and dominant appearance.

The spa was great, sauna a bit small but did its job and the pool was refreshing.

Go here for a relaxing holiday if you are looking for a few days of quietness, fresh air and good food. Only thing which maybe should be considered is to make it a an adult-only hotel as children jumping in the pool from a spa hotel is a little disturbing and for the rest there's not that much to do for kids. Though with the warmhearted ladies at this hotel, i don't think they would allow this ;)
