Stayed at the Protea hotel during a business trip in Feb.

I had a really good nights sleep. The room, bed and bedding where very comfortable and just what I needed after travelling hundreds of Km's. The aircon also worked very well and the staff where friendly and quick during check-in and check-out.

It is definitely the best accommodation i have stayed in during my visits to Zambia. The restaurant is also pretty good with not bad food and very good waiter service.

If you swim (i cant swim), they have quite a nice pool area.

The biggest problem is that the hotel is now 10 years old and is starting to age really badly. I am not sure if it is a case of poor maintenance or the environment or what? The toilets definitely need replacing, the toilet seat was broken, the grouting at the bottom very discolored and I had the same toilet flushing issue the other reviewers mentioned. The walls in the room need repainting as they are quite dirty and some of the public areas look like they are falling apart.

But at the end of the day at least it is safe, relatively clean and well situated with lots of safe parking.

Am sure I will be back, when travelling through the copper belt.

Room Tip: Try to get a room as close as possible to the restaurant if you have a lot of luggage. The hotel is...

I stayed at the Protea hotel for a couple of days, and although this is the best property in Chingola, it has its own share of problems.
While the staff were friendly, and the food was good, there were elementary issues like the toilet flush malfunctioning - and even after calling the housekeeping multiple times, no one turned up:(
May be it was a one off issue - and they were under staffed!

Stayed at the hotel for two nights, Monday and Tuesday.

The hotel looked great and my room was very large however the toilet didnt flush when I checked in so I informed reception and it was "fixed".

When I returned to the room later that evening, noted that there was no cold water and it took three visits by hotel staff to fix the toilet.

Rating "Service" down as a guest shouldnt have to pay for flushing there toilet with a waste paper bin! Wireless internet dropped in/out at night but was fine in the morning. Not ideal when you have to keep in touch with the office. My colleague also experience the same problem.

The buffet for the evening meals was fantastic as was the breakfast. Bar staff attentive and service good.

Would I stay at there again? Yes, but would insist in staying in a room where internet connection was known to be better.

Chingola is not filled with a lot of hotels and guesthouses - most of them are full of miners already. So the protea hotel is a safe, guaranteed options for whoever needs to go there.

I stayed in Protea Hotel in Chingola for 5 nights on a business trip and had no troubles at all with my room, my meals and my laundry.

A colleague of mine lost her gold necklace, but she could not tell if it was in the hotel or after her flight, so I don't think there's grounds to caution here - use your normal travel experience and you should be fine.

On arrival we received no more than a grunt from the girl behind the counter as we asked for our room, we were not told of meal times, breakfast times or checkout times. The bar and restaurant service was adequate and one staff member went out of her way to provide room service for the kids. My steak in the restaurant was beautiful!! Room comfort was very good. Checkout was much of the same lacking any customer service at all!!!

One thing I would say about the Protea in Chingola, is that the staff, the service is very good.
The rooms could do with a touch up, and a flat screen TV would not go astray.
the rooms are starting to look tired. though the restaurant, and the food was good.
the service was excellent, the staff could not do enough.
there is not a great deal to choose from in Chingola, so it would be no doubt the pick. There would be some local guesthouse accommodation in town, though I don't have any information on these.
Overall, yes i would say I would go back.
Prices are not cheap, so value for money is so so.
Though this is Zambia, and most accommodation is not cheap for what you get.

very nice hotel
caters to the copper mining industry and its ancillaries in and around chingila in copperbelt in zambia.

There is no other hotes that comes close in chingola.
Even the rates are reasonable, with rack rates hovering around 150-200 USD per night.

Nice food with a restaurent by the poolside. Had good italian food and some greek salad there.
Quite empty when i went there. Wonder how do they keep up the quality with less than 10 guests a day.
Frequent business travellers should enrol for their frequent visitors program since they have the best network in southern africa.
