“a different but pleasant experience”
Reviewed February 12, 2014

We stayed here for two nights whilst we toured around, and this was certainly one of the better hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka. Lots of wildlife around on the site, large pool (but didn’t get time to use it), well laid out site although it can be a longish walk from public areas to your room - one day it rained heavily whilst we were there, but every room had its own umbrella and, once you’d remembered the route back to your room, all was OK.

Our room was large, well laid out, firm bed (but not uncomfortably so) and had its own balcony where we sat one night for drink after dinner. However, this is one of those hotels where you put your key into a holder inside the door to get the electrical power switched on. Beware - when we sat out on our balcony we succeeded in locking ourselves out - but the staff sorted it out for us very quickly.

The dinner and breakfast buffets were excellent - both with a wide range of foods - and the local dishes thankfully weren’t toned down to match European tastes.

Yet again, if you don’t have the cash to pay the bill in SL rupees then I recommend using a credit card but make sure you ask for the bill to be paid in rupees - otherwise the hotel takes its 3% charge on conversion - as it does if you ask to pay with non-SL currency - and uses a poor exchange rate.

On our first visit to Srilanka, we stayed at this hotel. It is expansive, green in almost like a jungle setting with variety of flora fauna all around. The hotel lobby/reception is very unlike a hotel or resort..very different. The main building is imposing designed in old architectural style with bamboo furniture. Staff is welcoming. The rooms are cottage like with a small sit out. The hotel had monkeys all around so kids couldn't venture out much but a lovely setting. The hotel is next to a lake filled with white lilies n lotus leaves. Do take a walk along the vast lawns along the lake lined with trees shrubs n greenery. You can see many a birds and iguanas near the water. There's a small watch tower atop a tree. Kids had a great time collecting sticks reeds flowers & running around. On the other side of the lake you can enjoy a nice elephant ride along the lake's narrow path. Breakfast menu is vast with many choices in local as well as other platter. Spa inside the hotel is also nice. Amazing experience amidst nature...unforgettable.

Went there during January and booked a Deluxe Room. First day we visited, it was raining bit heavily thus we were confined to our room.

Room : Spacious and comprises of a bedroom and a living area. Since the hotel is situated in almost-like a wood, there is plenty of monkeys around and we preferred to keep all the windows and doors closed all the time. My only concern was the bathroom door which for me personally is a disturbance for my privacy. Other than that i would rate the quality of rooms as excellent.

Food : Offered a good variety of cuisines; local curries, pasta, grilled food and even a satisfying set of choices was available for vegetarians too. Even for dessert, the hotel had provided a variety of items in a scale i have not much seen in hotels outside of Colombo. I loved the flavours and the food tasted really good.
Since we traveled during the weekdays not much locals were present at the hotel except for honeymooners. But the it was much occupied with Europeans i suppose, thus the environment at the restaurant was very clam and less-noisy. :)

Staff : Friendly and polite and must respect for the privacy of the guests. Restaurant manager was seen talking to the guests during meal times, in the hope of getting feedback on possible areas they could improve on.

Spa : Enjoyed a good head massage from the spa at the hotel (based on the packaged we booked) and i believe other services offered by them should be as relaxing as what we experienced.

Environment and Setting : Peaceful, Calm natural surrounding. We took a local catamaran ride in the Habarana lake which is adjacent to the hotel. And i would like to make one more suggestion regarding the walkways. As mentioned earlier, on our day of arrival it was raining heavily and the walkways leading to the restaurant was full of puddles of water. On our way to the restaurant for dinner, we could hardly see where we were stepping on due to lack of visibility on the walkways. May be the management could do something to improve the lighting on walkways.

Overall : A great stay, great food and fabulous setting for some quality relaxation.

This is my fourth time to the Lodge over a period of 21 years, but the first with my girlfriend. I have never been disappointed at the Lodge. This time was even better. The staff were what made this stay truly memorable. From the time we arrived, till the time we left, everyone was so friendly and genuine. At the same time, they knew when to leave us alone and give us our privacy.
It truly is the little things that matter. When we arrived at the reception, we were warmly greeted. As soon as I mentioned that I had booked on Agoda and mentioned my name, Yohan at the reception grabbed my paper work and did a quick check in. In the meantime, my girlfriend and I were treated to cold towels and a fresh juice.
The porter was there straightaway to grab the gear from our car and take us to our room. He could tell we were tired, so after a quick run down of the room, he was off.
I also noticed that all, and I mean all the staff were very friendly. They would engage you in polite conversation, but knew exactly when to excuse themselves and respect your privacy.
The area surrounding the hotel is still breath taking and a dream for bird watchers. The rooms are super comfortable and very clean. Loved the new beds!!!
The food is the best I've had in Sri Lanka and the buffet staff were helpful and caring. Loved the salads made to order right in front of you! Wide variety of desserts and appetizers.

I can't wait to come back here again.
As a tip, I think you can get a better rate on Agoda, but it generally has 'room only' offers. Saying that, Cinnamon lodge was the best value for money place we stayed in while in the Dambulla/Sigiriya area. Others were pricey and lacked the warmth of Cinnamon lodge.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the far side of the hotel. We stayed at 73, which is on the western most side...

We have just left this hotel to continue our trip in SriLanka. It was really lovely. Such beautiful setting by a lake with exceptional wild life to see . Accommodation was very good but the staff were the real stars of the hotel.
Head chef Sunander Kumar is a great credit to the hotel. His food was delicious and he really understood what was needed. Our wine waiter Asanker , was very professional and a pleasure to have look after us and the dining manager Thilina Weerawansha was excellent too.
All the staff were polite, helpful and made our stay a delight. Thank you , I hope we can visit again. Valerie and John Briault

Our superior room was a delight, set in an independent duplicate near the lake. It's comfort and class was only let down by poor maintenance (air con not fully functioning and bathroom door catch sticking etc.) but a super spot nevertheless. Excellent pool, nice bar and great breakfast. Choose the right room and you are set!

We stayed here for three nights, in a very comfortable bungalow. It was a nice surprise to find we had been upgraded. The complex borders a lake, and lots of birds can be seen. Plenty of monkeys around too. And there is a garden area which perhaps a lot of guests don't discover. It was only because our driver / guide took us there that we found it. In that area is a butterfly garden, the place where they grow organic veg for the a la carte restaurant, and so many beautiful birds. The garden staff clearly enjoy helping guests to spot birds. But then perhaps it is good that lots of guests don't go to that area, the peace and tranquility would be spoiled.
The only reason I don't give the resort 5 stars is because of the food. As at other Cinnamon hotels that we stayed in, the buffet restaurant clearly caters more for the tour groups. We sampled the buffet the first night, most of the "hot " dishes were tepid. The dedicated " dessert " room had lots of interesting looking dishes, but on sampling a few, they were all tasteless.
So the next two nights we ate in the a la carte restaurant , which was very good, and not expensive. But it would have been nice if the menu had been different the second time, instead of exactly the same as the previous night.
But the buffet breakfast was excellent. We were able to reserve a table on the open air edge of the restaurant, and watch a very busy kingfisher dart back and forth as we ate.
