Habarana Village by Cinnamon

We stayed at the Chaya Village for 3 nights in September 2007. We found the hotel staff very welcoming and helpful from start to finish.
The accommodation is bungalow style. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished with a good sized bathroom and a small terrace. There is a reasonable sized swimming pool, overlooking the lake. This sometimes attracts the local monkeys who come to drink at the edge, which provides a fascinating sight.
The food at the hotel is buffet style and we couldn't fault it. There was an excellent range of Singalese and western style dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drinks -including imported wines & spirits - were inexpensive. Lion beer is recommended!
The hotel has extensive gardens which run alongside the lake. There are paths around the lake - you can walk these or ride on the back of an elephant.
This is a excellent base for visiting the Cultural Triangle and we would highly recommend it.

We stayed here for two nights in September while doing a tour of Sri Lanka. I had been looking forward to staying at the Cinnamon Lodge, however it was full so we were booked in to this hotel (which is right
next door) instead. The room we stayed in was nowhere near as nice as the one pictured by the previous reviewer (I think they had one of the
deluxe rooms!!!). But I thought it was quite good, it was large, simply decorated and it had a double bed. The bathroom was large and clean and I liked the smell of the soaps:-). There was no view whatsoever though from the front or back windows.

The grounds are very pretty as is the pool. When we went to use the pool in the late afternoon it was very crowded though with what seemed
to be locals and their children - not particularly relaxing. I think maybe this was because we were there on a weekend.

Both nights we were there the staff were busily setting up/taking down tables, banners, etc for corporate functions and both days we were there there were banners all over the grounds for various products (an energy drink the first day, sausages the next). Also not very relaxing, and it was also quite annoying when on the second evening we showed up for dinner at 1930 (the usual time it starts) and were told that dinner was being delayed until 2000, it seemed, for the convenience of this corporate function. It also appeared that the "regular" guests would be relegated to the back of the dining room
(the part with no view of the grounds). So we felt very much second class citizens. It would have been less irritating if they had bothered to notify us in advance.

Tried to use the Internet but the connection was on the fritz.

They do not have their own spa - you have to go over and use the one at the Cinnamon Lodge. I popped over to inquire about getting a massage there - but it was vaguely creepy - it looked closed from the outside and when you went in the lights all seemed to be out - so I opted not to use it!!! Just a word to the wise though - if your guide offers to take you for a massage outside of the hotel as it would be much cheaper than the spa in the hotel - check the price of the massages in the hotel first before agreeing - as we went and had a frankly dodgy massage near the hotel, and then when we got back, realised it would only have been a few dollars more to do it at the hotel spa!!! DOH!!!

The shop, is nice. The salespeople are a little pushy, but friendly. They have a nice selection of "factory direct" clothes intended for export - which are quite affordable considering they are being sold in a hotel shop!!!

The food was just acceptable, nothing special.

We did take a stroll over to The Cinnamon Lodge and had drinks in their bar. That was lovely as all their guests were still on tour so we had the place to ourselves. The staff were lovely and very helfpul.
The bar, restaurant, reception etc are all much nicer than the Chaaya Village (no sausage banners plastered everywhere, for a start) and I would recommend you stay there if you have a choice!!!

Important for both hotels though: don't forget to cover up and wear mosquito repellent in the evenings!!!

Nice setting by the lake. View was of other bungalows in the compound, not of lake or gardens. The "double" bed was twin beds pushed together, but the room was pleasant, large and clean. The shower was more of a wet room, but basic.

The food was good and varied (ignore the set menu and go for the buffet). The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar was open air and comfortable, but the entertainment was dire. Margarita score 5/10.

What a brilliant place to stay. Serene and peaceful and set in wonderful surroundings. Lovely secluded pool area. The food was brilliant and I had no qualms in trying out some of the local cuisine. You even get the odd visit from the occasional monkey in the open top restaurant. We stayed there in November last year when the weather was a bit unpredictable but this did nothing to spoil our time there. You can have an elephant ride through some of the forest and I can heartily recommend it. The grace and charm of these animals will melt your heart. Remember to take some bananas from the breakfast buffet for them.

Would heartily recomment this to anybody.

We stayed here for 2 nights on honeymoon as part of a 4 day tour in April. Fabulous people, accommodation, food. Beautiful setting. Swimming pool very unusual design but fantastic. Beautiful lake, monkeys, birds. One of the highlights for us here was the elephant ride a definite must for anyone. Recommend this hotel absolutely wonderful.
