Owner description: A safari in the Kaudulla national park in Sri Lanka is a bucket-list aspiration for many tourists, which mean the place is an absolutely incredible wildlife spectacle. Located in the historic city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka, Kaudulla national park presents an ample of opportunities for travellers to spot majestic elephants in their natural habitats. In addition to the elephants, sambar deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, chevrotain, wild boar, Asian spoonbill, grey-headed fish eagle, painted stork and openbill stork are common visuals at the park. Aside from these, one could rarely capture the glimpse of leopard and sloth bear in the forest. Going on a bumpy ride through an evergreen forest of Kaudulla national park along the small trails is a great adventure, wildlife enthusiasts can’t say ‘NO’ to. The Kaudulla reservoir being the life blood to the wildlife of the park, attracts herds of elephants during the dry season from nearby Minneriya, Wasgamuwa and Somawathiya national parks.

Went on the late afternoon trip from Habarana. We mentioned to our guesthouse (Mutu Village) owner that we were interested in birds and he organised a very good guide to go with the jeep, included in the price (90000rps for 2 people). We were very impressed at the range of birdlife and the beautiful scenery. A good number of elephants near the lake later, some with infants. Enjoyed it more than a whole day at Yala, as this park is more open and scenic.

Went expecting to see birds and elephants and that is what we saw and lots of them over 100 elephants all sizes. Many different birds , eagles , owes and more. We had a fabulous spotter and driver willing to spend time and make sure we enjoyed the trip.

Our driver did all the research to ensure we headed to the right park and it was worth the wait. More elephant than many will see in a lifetime.

Our tracker picked this park as he knew that's were the elephants would be, but even he seemed surprised there were so many, well over 100 in 2 herds.
I picked Sri Lanka to do my first safari & see wild elephants, and this park delivered. The jeeps stayed to the tracks, the elephants knew this, and were completely relaxed grazing down by the lake.
One male was in musk and after being turned down by all the females, he gave our jeep a nasty look which the driver sensed, he started the engine & moved the jeep safely away.
Also saw giant squirrel, peacocks, birds of prey etc.
We booked this through Cinnamon Lodge hotel for £84.

Worth a visit as we both saw our first elephants in the wild, but there were not many and no herds which we understood from our guide was unusual. We did actually see as many elephants from the road on the way back and understand that many were in the process of moving to a different location in the park.

Our driver organised this trip for us in Habarana. You can also book, I think, by just going to the Habarana cross roads where there are many jeeps you can hire to take you into the park.
