Owner description: A safari in the Kaudulla national park in Sri Lanka is a bucket-list aspiration for many tourists, which mean the place is an absolutely incredible wildlife spectacle. Located in the historic city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka, Kaudulla national park presents an ample of opportunities for travellers to spot majestic elephants in their natural habitats. In addition to the elephants, sambar deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, chevrotain, wild boar, Asian spoonbill, grey-headed fish eagle, painted stork and openbill stork are common visuals at the park. Aside from these, one could rarely capture the glimpse of leopard and sloth bear in the forest. Going on a bumpy ride through an evergreen forest of Kaudulla national park along the small trails is a great adventure, wildlife enthusiasts can’t say ‘NO’ to. The Kaudulla reservoir being the life blood to the wildlife of the park, attracts herds of elephants during the dry season from nearby Minneriya, Wasgamuwa and Somawathiya national parks.

Every trip to Sri Lanka should include a "wild elephant day". Once you are in Habarana you can book a safari jeep to pick you up at the hotel (around 2 pm, don't go in the morning). Ask the driver where the elephants are that day. Some days there are more in Minneriya and some days there are more in Kaudulla. So pick the park as they advise you. I have been to the parks many times. This year one day I went to Kaudulla, even if the hundreds of elephants were in Minneriya. I had a great day, seeing 60 elephants. There were only 2 more jeeps in the park because everybody else went to Minneriya. However, if you have only one day to go, better play it safe. If possible, try to avoid the weekend. Take water and snacks with you. Make sure the driver doesn't go too close to the elephants (they somehow believe, they would get a better tip doing so, which of course disturbs the elephants).

A must do if you want to see elephants in the wild. The jeep ride was fun too, riding in the back, standing up, saw monkies, peacocks, eagles, jackals and maybe a crocodile

Wanted to go minneriya but our driver said he called and checked that the herds are here. Took ard 2h in the park saw a herd of 25 elephants, and some animals thats all. Did not see 100-200 elephants like what others said. For 4 of us, the jeep cost 5500rp. They wanted to charge us 16000rp including entrance. But we read from forum that it wasnt so costly. We requested to buy tickets ourselves and cost 7300rp for 4. Personally prefer yala. More variety of animals.

Not sure who our guide and jeep was booked through as it was as our driver who organised it but we really enjoyed a visit to this national park. We saw herds of elephants, a wide variety of birds (loads of painted storks), a herd of water buffalo (surrounded by cattle egret) and a few interesting lizards/iguanas. The park is beautiful. We went at around 1pm and only saw a couple of other jeeps but as we were leaving at around 4pm there seemed to be quite a few jeeps coming in. It is worth a trip here and was a definite highlight for us.
