“Was expecting 5 elephants and saw over 200”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

We visited Kaudulla in October 2012. Our guide reported to us each day how many elephants had been seen in the park so we were pretty certain of catching sight of at least one! There were only two of us, and because our driver was a qualified guide we didn't need to pick up a park guide or a ranger. Our jeep was very old - but it worked - and we were able to stand up behind the drivers cab and get a good view. Our driver was also sensible and didn't go too close to the water and so didn't get stuck in the mud. We saw one jeep with wheels spinning - presumably damaging the grasslands - and also frightening the animals away.

Helpful Hint: Go with a set of binoculars

“Well worth it”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

This was the best day of our holiday. We were lucky enough to see a large family group of wild elephants, fantastic. I will never forget this National Park. Saw various types of eagles, mongoose, water buffalo, the elephants, loads of different birds. We had a good driver and a guide who spotted things we would never have seen. Fantastic

“Amazing view of wild elephants”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

It was explained to me that, depending on the time of year, the elephants will be in different areas. They may be in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Parks depending on the level of water in the tanks (reservoirs). We saw over 100 elephants in the park. It was quite the experience. I've been living in Sri Lanka for over a year, and this is one of the best experiences so far.

“No 4wd Sir!!!.”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

One of the most memorable safaris but for all the wrong reasons.

The day started rather well.. Loads of birds, Amazing photos. Then the elephants, the jackals and a very pleasant but a rather uncomfortable ride. The terrain is rough and the driver flies accross teh terrain for reasons known only to him until we got stuck in mud!!!.

No problem. This wasn’t too bad compared to place we have successfully come off in other parks around the world.
So I politely asked the driver to engage 4wd and before I could complete the sentence he goes “ no 4 wheel driver sir”.

That’s when we realized the reason behind his insane driving. We was using speed to stay unstuck!!.

What options did we have.. well nothing really except to push the vehicle in deep mud and that’s what we did.. no chance.. was so stuck and without a low range 4 wheel drive, the vehicle was infact sinking further with every time the wheels rotated.

In the meantime the driver had called a buddy with a 4 wheel drive jeep that was almost 2 hours away. So we stood outside the vehicle, in prime elephant and Russels viper territory, soaked in mud. At dusk the park elephants came out of the thickets and were all around us.

Fortunately the 4wd arrived before it was too late and we were rescued. Although been stuck in mud,and not seeing much as a result, it was one of the most exciting safaris we have ever done.

So be aware.. make sure the vehicle you hire is terrain able. Most Tata vehicles there arnt!
