The gathering at Minneriya is such an amazing sight. It is a must see if you are in Sri Lanka around July-September. I saw about 300 elephants and lots of baby elephants. It's good to enter the park at about 3pm because elephants come out of the thick jungle to the water tank late evening, so the later you go the more chance to see lots of elephants. I think the ticket counter close at 5:30pm. However if you are by the tank around 4pm this should be fine!

This safari was fantastic. We were lucky enough to see several herds of wild elephants. They were in the river and the lake. Lots of baby elephants and lone males. We also saw chameleons and a river crocodile, which we were told is pretty rare. Our guides were great and we wouldn't have missed this experience for anything.

It is quire interesting as there were a few herds of elephant when we were there. The lake is huge and there were loads of birds and eagles too.

From what I heard, it is better to go in the evening say, 3pm or so as that is when the elephants are feeding. The jeep usually parks about 15m from the herds so you can get pretty good views of the elephants. We were observing a pair of juveniles playing & they had their trunks all over each other and even tried climbing over each other! There were also 'toddlers' which stayed close to the mum.

Moving from herd to herd, we encountered sole male elephants too.

The safaris are open top so you can stand and put your head out but be careful of tree branches!

This was our first experience of the Safari, the jeeps are decent nothing fancy, however if found the value coefficient questionable. The jeep cost $50 + entrance fees all worked out to be around LKR15000 for 2A + 2 Chld which just to view elephants is quite steep.

Drove for almost an hour to view elephants, cannot get down, the jeeps park around 10-15 meters away and we can just observe them.
