If you love elephants, this is the place to go. It was a short drive to the park and we saw a lot of elephants including baby elephants.

Fabulous opportunity to see elephants up close. The jeeps however were rough and ready and being knocked about as we drove around was par for the course.

The rating does not refer to what we saw. That was magnificent. To see the gathering of hundreds of elephants on the grassy plains left by the receding lake is an awe inspiring sight. Even when they get a bit grumpy an make a run at the jeeps it teaches us to respect them as creatures requiring their own space. Their existence is supported by the tourist dollar being spent. We were appalled at the lack of clear information as to prices, the convoluted pricing structure and then it was an absolute 'bun fight' to get a ticket at the one small ticket office, with one very slow attendant( who couldn't even supply change) having to be aggressive to get past all the guides who thought they should be entitled to push past and get served first. Surely the national park can do better. Also many of the jeeps had only one or two customers, meaning that where there could have been twenty jeeps surrounding the elephants, by forcing a consolidation of passengers...a. There would be less vehicles disturbing the animals. And b. there would be motivation for the touts to provide a better service so they can 'fill' their jeeps. As with everything in Sril Lanka, make sure you negotiate ad naseum, to ensure you get no nasty requests for cash at the end.

We avoided national parks in Sri Lanka in general, but went to Minneriya on our host's recommendation and weren't disappointed. Yes, there are jeeps, tourists and cameras looking for elephants, but that's to be expected. The part itself is beautiful - with lakes where birds congregate, lots of greenery, and stunning colors at sunset.

We were hoping to see the gathering of elephants, but it was still the monsoon season and the path was filled with water, so we couldn't. Lovely escape for nature lovers though.

We really enjoyed our safari, especially the kids. There were lots of elephants. The baby ones were very cute. Highly recommend.
