“Beautiful hotel next to the desert”
Reviewed March 29, 2011

This was the best place to stay in the area, it is fantastic. The French owner who was very nice is an architect and has produced a beautiful Oasis. Individual stylish mud buildings with very high standard bedding/ towels/showers etc. It is a bit of luxury. The food was fantastic. Service was fantastic from all staff. I would love to go back here some day. I traveled to the dessert for a 1 night stay with Sahara services and stayed in Erg Chebbi dunes, this was also fantastic. A very memorable stay.

We stayed at Dar Azawad for two nights, with a night in the 'charme' camp at Chigaga in between. The first night at the hotel, we were in a standard room, which was very comfortable - would have been happy to stay there a few more nights. The second night at the hotel was in one of the nomad rooms - which I would avoid if I was ever there again. The ceiling of the room was very low, and it only has two tiny windows. As a result, it feels very enclosed and dusty/sandy. The quality of the beds was also much less than in the other room we stayed in.

The food at the hotel is really of an excellent standard - far, far beyond what you would expect in such a remote location - it would easily compare with a good restaurant in a big city. However, they allow smoking both in the bar and the dining room - which wasn't a problem one night, but was a big problem the second night when we were next to a large table with lots of heavy smokers.

The tented camp was not really up to the description on the website. Yes, the dunes are spectacular - but the really loud generator noise is very intrusive (yes, I know you need a generator to have electricity/hot water, but given the price you pay for the tented camp, you would expect them to find some solution to reduce the noise). The tents are very attractive and well spread out from eachother - with full bathrooms which is indeed a luxury - but in our tent there was a major leak from the bathroom into the main part of the tent which meant we didn't have hot water and the carpet in the tent was soaking wet for all our stay - and though the manager eventually managed to fix the leak, no one did anything about the carpet.

For a hotel and a camp in the middle of nowhere, it isn't bad, the food is outstanding, and the locations are stunning but I've been to places that were just as remote but had better service.

Dar Azawad – is in great location on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The rooms are comfortable and decorated beautifully. It has a delightful swimming pool area. The staff were very helpful and the food was delicious. The trip to the desert camp was a highlight of our stay where once again the staff made us feel so special.

We thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful riad with excellent food and service. It is discretely located, as we drove by it twice. Even tho' its in a remote part of the country, it had full services as if we were it Marakesh.
Its lovely pool within the fabulous garden was most welcoming and refreshing after our trip to the desert.
Charmingly decorated rooms in the best of Moroccan and French taste which are looked after by excellent staff. We didn't have a massage , but it is also on offer.
We had a visit to the local kasbah which I wouldn't have missed, as it was a real insite as how south eastern Morrocans live.
I would highly recommend Dar Azawad for a holiday.

I am totally amazed by the negative comment i just read on Dar Azawad, so i wish to react ... . I am currently living in Paris and just came back from a fabulous trip to South Morocco. I stayed a week with some friends at Dar Azawad. We initially wished to spend some time in the desert to relax and rest, far away from the urban life. Some friends recommended that place to me.
We were completely delighted by the tailored-made organization offered to us from our arrival in Ouarzazate to our departure. We had nothing to worry about, everything was entirely handled by Vincent and his team !
We loved the hotel (beautiful and comfortable rooms, nice leaving areas,...) and its great heated outdoor pool, its very nice and professional team, its restaurant combining a high quality Moroccan and Western gastronomy (delicious !), its quiet and peaceful environment.
We also enjoyed a night in the desert. We chose between the 3 different packages suggested by Vincent, which allowed us to adapt our bivouac activities to our budget and this definitely worths the price for a lifetime experience !!! A perfect service, a perfect place for a magical & unspeakable experience, you really have to live it to understand it
;-)) !

Firstly, Dar Azawad isn't in Zagora - it's some way south near M'hamid on the edge of the Sahara. If you're looking for a hotel in Zagora, don't stay here! On the other hand, if you want a relaxing, well maintained hotel with excellent service to return to after a camel trek, or quad biking trip, you can't do better.

Service was very good, as were the facilities. The pool was refreshing on a hot April day, and having lunch by the pool gave us a couple of hours of quality, relaxing time after the long drive south.

Rooms are individual buildings, and air-con was effective. Because rooms are individual buildings, with paths between them, it's inevitable that there will be some insects around. We had a number of ants in one of the rooms, but it wasn't an issue.

We were traveling around and find this hotel in the internet. The critics were nice and it was very nice to stay there. The rooms are nice, food is good, i strongly recommend it
What i don"t understand is why they associate them selfs to poor and not quality desert services. The trip to shara organized by the hotel was horrible and very very overprice. we payed a 5 star hotel and seeped in a horrible tend (shared with 4 persons). you travel in a camel around the city garbage (it was easy to go to the "camping" by car and foot).
If you look for a nice experience do not use there services. They just contract bad companies and overcharge them in a french look way photos ()
Regards

Basically I'd recommend staying at Dar Azawad but doing the desert excursion with a separate company.
