I have been trying to book this hotel and contacted them through 3 routes: as per their contact page, I have send e-mails to their "Reservations and information" listed e-mails (info at hotelxixim dot com, and reservaciones at hotelxixim dot com); I have also used their "information request form" on the website.
I never got any answer. Based on the review below, of very low occupancy rate, I suppose that this hotel is not open anymore.

Dear LondonVibrations,

I am so sorry!! Please excuse us, or perhaps technology. Indeed we have changed the server and our e-mails to hotelxixim.com. I know we have problems and believe me I have tried to solve them. Unfortunately mi knowledge of this issues are almost nil (I am what we call in Mexico – en la tercera edad – the third age = more than 60 years old) and unfortunately without grandchildren that could help me out.
I have to comply with what our ‘guru’ webmaster sais.

Besides this complaint I am pleased to inform you that we are opened and that we would be more than pleased to welcome you at Xixim. Would you please try again on the e-mails you stated? I hope this time it will work.

Wishing you a wonderful Sunday and a pleasant productive week,

Kind regards,

First time I am reluctant to write a review: as many have noticed you want to keep this place to yourself, a hidden secret and gem to be enjoyed. But the place needs people to keep going. So here it is: the place is outstanding. it is charming, inviting, staff attentive to all your wishes. Rooms, rather huts, are beautiful, with a great outdoor place. The place is secluded, you walk the beach basically seeing no one, have too pools to yourself, massage. Breakfast is fresh and delicious. We stayed a couple of nights, then drove through Yukatan, then realized we simply have to come back. We did and spend another three days in Xixim - the time we have left in Mexico. We had dinners in the hotel and in town - both delicious. Went to see flamingoes - sooo beautiful! - with the great ornitologist suggested by the hotel. Went on a night bird-watching trip. My husband and my son wanted to go fishing and the staff organized everything. Waters were a bit rough in the morning and they suggested we should not go so the boy does not get sea-sick - which we appreciated.
We have traveled a lot and this is the place we want to come back now. When my son tells me almost daily - I want to go back to Mexico - I know exactly where he wants to go.

Dear Alexey_Barinov,

What can I say! Emotion and tears came as I read your touching review. Obviously my Russian language is non existent, but, as to Google translator, thank you, gracias, dankeschön, merci - in Russian is said спасибо.

With all my heart and also in the name of the staff that makes this pristine spot in the world possible I thank you dearly and really hope that your path or your son’s will soon find its way back to Mexico. Mi casa es tu casa - my home is your home...

Again, thank you, thank you, спасибо….

This is an excellent place to stay if you value peace, quiet and seclusion. We had a very relaxing time during the week here in March.
The staff are attentive, friendly and very helpful. Meals are delicious and service is available both in the restaurant and by the pools.
Their master suites are spacious, cool, and comfortable. The view of the ocean when waking up is extremely soothing.
Day trips are available but the location lends itself better to those who wish to stick to the resort and enjoy the atmosphere while watching pelicans dive in the ocean.

Dear Marmaladesandwitches,

Thank you so much for having taken your time to write such a perfect review on Xixim, Unique Mayan Hotel.

It is extremely rewarding for me and the staff that works with us to read the compliments on our facilities, the pristine setting, gastronomy, but mainly on service, as we think that a paramount topic that distinguishes one hotel of the other is precisely the personalized warm Mayan service we try to provide.

We also think that our resort offers the right setting for wellness, for being – for wellbeing. Thank you for having experienced this.

I hope you had a blessed and happy Easter,

Kind regards

We feel so lucky to have been able to spend 4 nights at Xixim.

It's stylish, well kept, has a fantastic location in the middle of nowhere and the staff are the friendliest and most helpful people that we've ever encountered at a hotel.

On our arrival, Alejandro showed us around and took us to our beautiful room. Our first though was WOW!...one we had settled in we just kept thinking ' Aah...this is the life!'

To enjoy this place you need to be happy with your own company. We loved the fact that there was nothing really to do except relax, read, walk along the unmanicured beach and enjoy the lovely food.

We booked a nature package which included three birdwatching type excursions with local experts. These 3 hour activities were very enjoyable and hugely added to our overall experience at Xixim. The package also included all our meals and transfers from Merida.

We were pleased to have all our meals included because we had been a little concerned that without that we would be a captive audience forced to pay elevated prices simply because there was no other option. In fact, the prices on the menu were very reasonable. We're still pleased that we had that meal plan though because we didn't have to worry about a huge bill at the end. The drinks prices were comparable to what what we paid elsewhere. We mainly ate the mexican/yucatan food because we were keen to make the most of this opportunity. We were never disappointed. After our first couple of days, lovely Raul began suggesting food that he thought we might enjoy. Some of this was off-menu. His suggestions were all perfect and we very much appreciated that he took this trouble for us. Gustavo and Victor were our other main waiters and they too were very helpful and friendly. Thanks to Victor for the extra slice of cinnamon cake when we mentioned that we liked it! The restaurant staff were also flexible about timings. One day we needed an early dinner so that we could go out on our night safari at 8pm. Our request was accommodated with no issues. We ordered in advance and our meal was ready when we arrived to eat at 7:15pm before the standard opening time. On our final morning we had to leave early and, once again, our request for an early breakfast was accommodated.

Our room was a master suite and was cool, stylish luxury. Our private terrace was our favourite place...in fact we preferred to sit there than by either of the lovely pools.

Every morning at 7:30am coffee and a slice of tasty cinnamon cake was delivered to our room...very quietly and gently left on the desk in front of a magic window (you'll understand when you get there!). So all that was needed was for us to raise the blinds, get the coffee then sit in bed enjoying the view of the sea through the full length doors and windows.

The gardens were lovely and very well kept. I like that plants were numbered and that there was a leaflet that named and described them.

In our view there was only one small thing that wasn't right and that was that the TV was in the bar area and, one evening, when there were not a large number of diners, the evening meal was served in the bar area...so our meal had an American kids film as a noisy backdrop. Our suggestion would be to get the TV area partitioned off or don't serve the evening meals there.

In terms of getting there, we had considered hiring a car but having never been to Mexico before and not knowing what to expect we decided not to. For a few days before our stay at Xixim we were staying at Playa del Carmen, When we arrived at PDC we went to the bus station and booked seats on an ADO bus from PDC to Merida...this was all fine and when we arrived at Merida our Xixim driver was waiting to transport us.

Actually, if we come again, and we truly hope that we will, we may well hire a car. Although the 10k track from Celestun is unmade it really isn't too rough for a standard car if you take it steady and watch where you're going.

We like trying new places and we've never returned to a place before....we think that we might make an exception for Xixim. I just hope that it stays as it is and doesn't lose any of it's friendliness and style.

Room Tip: I doubt that there are any ad rooms...but we found a master suite to be excellent.

Dear SportsfanHerts_UK:

I myself and in the name of the staff that works with us at Xixim, Unique Mayan Hotel, thank you so much for your excellent, beautiful, wonderful, amazing, awesome review.

We are very proud and pleased that this pristine spot on Earth is the first one you consider revisiting. As we say here in Mexico ‘mi es su casa’ – my home is your home. We would be very pleased and thrilled to greet and pamper you again in our resort in the near future.
Don’t worry, I am positive, we are not going to change our vision and mission of our resort, which is to create a home away from home in a unique pristine setting, which we jealously keep and preserve.

Wishing you a happy and blessed Easter
Kind regards,

Verena Gerber

Like others we wanted to see the flamingos and bird life - which were amazing.

This hotel seemed to be one of the only options from afar. As many have said, it is 10kms to the north of Celestun along an unmade road so it takes a while to get there and makes unnecessary journeys a bit of a pain (20 mins each way).

We went for 2 nights at a time when the weather was unsettled, cloudy, a bit rainy and windy, and the hotel complex did not look its best under those circumstances - the beach was wild, desolate, a little shabby and not very inviting. There were very few people staying - 3 or 4 other couples/families so the restaurant, which is hardly cosy or atmospeheric at the best of times, was rather cold and soulless. The food was average - service good.

The room was nice except the fittings of the bathroom were unexceptional and it was a bit smelly. On arrival there was an infestation of ants on one side of the room but the cleaners soon arrived to spray and clean up and it didn't present too much of a problem.

Dear CharlesBrighton:

Thank you so much for taking your time to paste a review on Xixim, Unique Mayan Hotel.

We are sorry the weather was not appropriate for a visit to the beach and yes, you are right, the sea gets a gray color and then we also get lots of debris, which we also do not like.

What should not be, and I deeply apologize for that, is a smelly bathroom – I will look personally into it.
As to ants in the room, I would not like to sleep with them either. I am happy that we reacted quickly. When the weather changes, ants also move location and as we are in a very pristine spot, we have also a lot of ants.

I nevertheless hope, that you will consider visiting Xixim again in the near future and that Mother Nature will reward you with sunny weather to erase your feeling of strangeness to the place. We ourselves will try to compensate this sensation with a bottle of wine.

Wishing you a blessed Easter
Kind regards,

Verena Gerber

As others have said, peace and quiet and beautiful, deserted beaches. If you're looking for a party don't come here but if you want to experience quiet nature then this is the place. Deluxe suite was gorgeous, spacious and luxurious. However, there were mosquitoes in the room and we did get a few bites, even though it was dry season. The hotel should try to correct this. Food was very good, but not outstanding. Again, for the prices being charged, this could be improved. Restaurant service was acceptable but a little slow, another area for improvement. All in all a positive experience rating 4.5 stars, but we're giving the benefit of the doubt for the beautiful natural surroundings. Tip for naturists: the beaches to the north of the resort are deserted, in two days we saw no one else.

Room Tip: North end deluxe suites very private.

Dear ejbmgd:

Thank you so much for your accurate review on Xixim, Unique Mayan Hotel.

You are absolutely right in your comments on the divisions, which need improvement like quality and standardization of the food and promptness and excellent service. I promise we have worked hard on these two issues. In fact, next month, we will have the visit of an acknowledged chef to train our kitchen staff. As to service, this is a little bit more difficult as we have high staff turnover in this division, but nevertheless, I promise, we won’t give up.

Finally to mosquitoes. Our resort lies between two waters: the Gulf of Mexico and the Celestun Inlet. You can imagine we have a huge and renewable resource of them. We provide a mosquito repellent and a mosquito killer in our suites and we fumigate our premises very often with pyrethrins, eco friendly product, that only kills mosquitoes. On the other hand, we should not exterminate them all, as we would kill other species that feed on them.
I fully agree that mosquitoes are annoying and believe me, we try our uttermost to control them.

We sincerely hope your path will consider Xixim again in the near future to escape from the cold winter days in Canada and to see if we have improved on the issues stated.

Hope you had a safe trip home,
Kind regards,

Verena Gerber

This IS the place to stay when in that part of the world. An absolute delight and surprise. We stayed in one of their master suites and it was divine. The staff were all wonderful, helpful and the BEST! Very friendly and very polite. The pics one sees of the area are true. Thousands upon thousands of shells on the beach. The food there is great as well. We booked the tour with their tour person, Alex. He is an expert on the birds and biodiversity there. Educated at Syracuse University no less! An absolute gem. The only thing is, be advised the property is located 10KM outside of the village on a dirt road (well maintained). Signage is good, so trust it. But, it really really is out in nowhere....but is very safe and feels very safe. Would highly recommend!

Room Tip: From what we saw, all rooms would be good. Very private. Just a question of how much space you want.

Dear nancyqc:

Thank you so much for your magnificent review on Xixim, Unique Mayan Hotel.

We obviously were delighted with your comment: “This IS the place to stay when in that part of the World”.
We take great care to maintain the pristine environment and also try to make your experience in Xixim a unique and pampered one, regarding the design of the rooms, personalized service and excellent food.

I also think that Alex Dzib is the best naturalist guide in Celestún and I dare to say, he is the best ornithologist in the whole of Yucatan.
I am convinced that a nature tour is a delight in knowledge, understanding and experience or quite the opposite, a complete disaster, depending on the guide.

I hope you had a safe trip home and obviously would consider visiting Xixim again.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,
Kind regards,

Verena Gerber
