This hotel was part of the slightly earlier wave of modern hotels built when Macau opened up the casino licensing market in the 2000s. It's located in an older area of peninsular Macau, a reasonably short walk to historic Senado Square, and with many of Macau's old late 19th- and early/mid-20th century side streets to explore nearby. If you want old and "local" Macau, it's a convenient location. If you wanted the glitz of the Cotai Strip and the big new casino complexes, you're in the wrong place here.

The hotel itself is a pretty massive edifice, with one side facing the busy R. das Lorchas avenue (the main thoroughfare running down the western side of peninsular Macau) and the other facing the river (so, many rooms have river views, and looking across the river towards China). The lobby is on the upper level (reached via escalator or up the vehicle ramp).

I've stayed here a few times; it's a good value proposition. Rooms are nice and modern, though they are small by the standards of the newer fancier Cotai Strip hotels. Prices are extremely reasonable, well below the big Cotai Strip hotels, and you can get very very good deals on weekdays (including for big suites). Service is fine. Many deals include free buffet breakfast, and I've been surprised at how extensive and nice the breakfast buffet is.

As with the other larger hotels, there is a free shuttle bus service to/from the Macau Ferry Pier.

I had a three night stay in a river view room on the club floor and couldn't fault a thing. Checking in and out was a breeze, the room was very comfortable with an excellent bed, and the staff superb. When booking I wasn't too sure about the location as it seemed a bit out of the way, however it's right on the edge of the historic, and what I found to be, the most interesting part of Macau. Top stuff.

Room Tip: On the club floor I think the city view is better than the river view

Just had a wonderful stay at the Sofitel Macau! Situated just next to the old town it provides the perfect combination of old charm and 5-star luxury. Great pool with wonderful riverfront views as well! Thank you to hotel manager Guillame for the extra special birthday treat and for taking such good care of us!

From the ferry point the hotel provides a bus service to the hotel FOC.

The service at the hotel is good. The rooms are large and are very comfortable and clean. They also provide a smart phone for usage but the conditions of damage and penalty seem too steep so we did not want to take any risk.

Our room overlook the pool and the river which is very nice. Showering facilities after you use the gymn or the pool are also very good.

It is also a walking distance to the Ruins of St. Paul's.

very pleasant stay, staff are so helpful and always willing to help. The room is clean and cozy, the food in the buffet restaurant has a big variety. Hotel offers a smartphone , which comes very handy. We definitely will recommend the hotel.
