Service was good and everyone was very friendly. The room was comfortable and clean. I had an overall good experience. The sauna room was nice and comfortable. The restaurant where I had breakfast had good variety to choose from, they are unique in their style and created a different experience for me.

I stayed here for a few days to attend a conference. To start with the conclusion, this is not a bad hotel, and many travelers will likely be quite satisfied staying here. The service is excellent, and the hotel is beautifully decorated.

However, for a New Yorker, the smell of cigarette smoke, which is pervasive throughout the hotel including in the lobby, and the elevators, was extremely annoying. Even though my floor and room was supposedly non-smoking, the cigarette smell was there too. In order to exchange money, you have to go downstairs to the casino, where the smoke is particularly thick. After spending 10 minutes there, I had to take my suit for dry cleaning to get rid of the smell (unfortunately, this is no exaggeration). Fittingly, in the lobby, there is a big picture of Brigitte Bardot with a cigarette. To be fair, many other places in Macau appear to have the same problem, and it may simply reflect the fact that most visitors to this special city are happy to be surrounded by cigarette smoke. If you can’t stand cigarettes, then Macau is probably not your cup of tea.

On the positive side, the staff at the hotel had an excellent, service-minded attitude, and did their best to assist and respond to all requests. The smell aside, the room was actually very comfortable and had a nice view of the city. The Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, and the TV had a good selection of channels. And the location of the hotel is good.

The breakfast had also many positive surprises, including a selection of chocolate (!), crepes, waffles etc. Strangely, some of the best parts such as French cheese and bread were tucked away in a corner, out of sight for most guests. Some basics such as egg/bacon did not seem to be available. Or, perhaps they were also hidden away somewhere. As most other guests appeared to be Chinese, perhaps these things are not much in demand, but many European and North American travelers would surely appreciate them. Oddly, the first thing you see when you enter the restaurant for breakfast is the table with the chocolate selection!

In summary, this is a good hotel, particularly for people who like to gamble, shop and smoke. However, if you expect the same experience as in a Sofitel in Paris or San Francisco, you will be in for a few surprises.

Dear TripAdvisor Member (aka. aibnyc)

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your recent stay at the Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16. We really appreciate your review as it is very detailed and it allows us to work towards improvement.

It is a pity to know that you perceived cigarette smell in our property. We have been fighting back by installing diverse systems that in fact have reduced the strong smell of smoke. We recently installed air curtains around the lobby and we have received good feedback about it. Mostly, the smell comes from the casino which is not owned by Sofitel but by the company Ponte 16 and we unfortunately have no management of the establishment.

On the other hand, we loved knowing that the service of our Ambassadors and our facilities were up to your expectations! We are committed to provide the best service in town and it is exciting to know that all our efforts paid off.

Our chef has appreciated your feedback and will follow up accordingly to all your pointers.
We look forward to having you back soon! We hope you had a safe flight back home: New York, New York.

Yours sincerely,

J.P. Rodriguez
