“A great find in Macau”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2014

Pousada de Mong-Ha is the perfect place to stay in Macao, especially if you are interested in more than gambling. Pousada means a place of rest and welcome and used to identify traditional Portuguese inns which date back to the middle ages. A pousada reflects the architectural, decorative and gastronomic characteristics of a region. The Pousada de Mong-Ha is the hotel associated with Institute of Tourism. Located on a hilltop that was once a 19th century Portuguese fortress today there are natural gardens and woods creating an ambiance of serenity. The hotel has small patios with fountains and traditional Portuguese title accents,
The 20 rooms present a blend of East and West and include all the amenities one expects from a more expensive hotel. The multi-jet shower is amazing. The complimentary breakfast includes eggs cooked to order and many homemade items including jams and breads.

There is a free one-way shuttle three times a day to central locations including the ferry station and A-ma Temple. The Educational Restaurant is beautiful offering a wide selection of wines. The restaurant also has a Happy Hour and Afternoon Tea. Keep in mind that it is a school so the restaurant is not open on weekends and holidays.

Needless to say, the service is excellent. The students are passionate about their position and desire to offer excellent service.

Room Tip: The basic room is small so it roominess is a concern book their suite. Sing up for their "Frien...

The Pousada is lovely little training hotel away from the glitz and glitter of downtown Macao. Rooms are spacious as are bathrooms, with a Portuguese feel. Staff are helpful and polite, breakfast was good. Macao was not for us (too much glitz, we went out of curiosity), so we were delighted to be out of the way. Don't miss a walk in the surrounding park to see the locals doing their exercises first thing in the morning. We won't be returning to Macao, but we would recommend this hotel to anyone going there.

ROOM: We stayed in a standard room on ground level. Rooms are small but very clean and tastefully decorated in traditional Portuguese style. Room amenities were basic, but we had everything we needed. The bathroom was particularly small, and could only accommodate one person at a time.

SERVICE: As the hotel serves as training ground for students of Instituto de Formação Turística, I did not expect a professional level of service. However, most students were eager to help, and an instructor was present to assist them during our check in. Overall, they were able deliver the service we required, and most were courteous, and acknowledged and greeted us every time. A few managed to exceed our expectations. I also thought that service here is much better than in any midscale hotel I have stayed before.

LOCATION: I like the neighborhood surrounding the hotel, as it is not within the casino areas, but relatively quiet, and surrounded by tree-lined streets, shops, gardens and museums. Exact location of the hotel however may be problematic for some as it requires steep uphill walk. Too bad for us, as we've decided to take the bus before check in and had to pull our luggage and carry our bags on our way.

VALUE: As it is government-owned, the hotel is exempted from service charge and tax. We were pleasantly surprised by the selection and quality of breakfast buffet, as we only expected a set continental breakfast. These, along with complimentary minibar and Wi-Fi, make the hotel an excellent value.

I recommend this to travelers looking for value who are not particularly concerned with small room size and uphill walk. Patience and understanding to help students develop confidence and skills in the hospitality industry are also expected.

The school is advised to strengthen students language skills so as to preclude students from conveniently just saying no to guest requests which otherwise would have been feasible.

I found this hotel through Trip Advisor, where it is ranked #2 among Macau hotels, and it deserves this rating.

When we arrived, we were offered tea but they were so quick in checking us in, I didn't have time to drink it.

Only a standard room was available. It was small but adequate, as is the bathroom, especially considering it costs almost one-half what one would pay for a similar room at a casino hotel. The bed was very comfortable and the linens luxurious. Down pillows were already on the bed though foam ones are available.

I cannot stand it when at four and five-star hotels, hangers cannot be removed from the closet. This hotel's hangers are real ones. There's a working alarm clock. (I've been in several hotels where there are none.) There's a safe and bathrobes. Towels are huge and fluffy.

The one drawback is that there was only one reading light. (We were in room 202.) There was a huge desk on one side of the bed and it was impossible to put a lamp on it. It was not a very useful piece of furniture, but it had a computer for guests.

The internet connection was good.

The room service was excellent.

The price includes a breakfast. The buffet is simple. You are not going to find the overwhelming choice of dishes as you would find at huge hotels. Everything was fresh and well-prepared. You can order eggs, which are cooked to perfection. I had the best french toast EVER.

The breakfast room is charming, with lots of light, looking over an herb garden.

The front desk staff were extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. They spoke excellent English. I especially appreciate how they took the initiative to make sure that information was correct. For example, because it was Christmas, they called the IFT Restaurant where we had lunch reservations to make sure that the dessert buffet was offered during the holiday season.

The hotel is located in the northern part of the city, not far from the Barrier Gate, an easy walk away. It is on a hill with a fortress. We took Bus #12 from the Ferry Terminal as a local friend warned us off the taxis and we were traveling fairly light, anyway. The hotel provides a detailed map on where to get off and how to find the road up the hill to the hotel. There is a three-minute climb.

We love the location which is surrounded by historic buildings and where local restaurants are inexpensive and patronized by the Macanese. Gamblers are not at all interested in this area.

The bus system is fairly easy to figure out and cheap. We took buses everywhere, though during rush hour, we were not able to get on one to get back to hotel as quickly as we wanted. We had to walk for awhile until the crowds thinned. Taking a taxi wouldn't have worked because of the traffic snarls.

Because of rush hour traffic, some may find the location to be a great disadvantage, but we will definitely stay here again, reserving as far in advance as possible. The service, and price cannot be beat. We were extremely fortunate that there was a room available for three nights the week before Christmas.

Room Tip: There were no deluxe rooms to view but we had a look at a suite and it is beautiful, comfortable, an...

Stayed here for two nights in my first ever trip to Macau. I read all of the fantastic 5 star reviews of this place on this site, and decided to try. I was not disappointed one bit. Because this hotel is a training school for students entering the hospitality industry, the stay is much more special than what you would get at other hotels. The staff are super friendly and will do what they can to make your stay that much more pleasant. The hotel is relatively small as much of the buildings make up the entire school itself. Our family had two separate rooms. One with 1 king bed, while the second had two twin beds. The bed was quite comfortable and the room was larger than what was found in most of the other hotels in that region of Asia. The bathroom was clean and had an excellent shower system that I could never find in other hotels I've stayed in. The room was also non-smoking as was the entire hotel.

Breakfast consisted of western and chinese food items. Keep in mind that nearly all of the breakfast items were prepared and cooked by the students! The staff in the breakfast area were nearly all students except for one or two supervisors in the mix. In the evening, we ate at the Educational Restaurant, which turned out to be quite good. Again, all of the staff were students with a few supervisors on hand. They did their jobs slowly but confidently. Could not fault the staff in any category. Reservations are recommended as space can be taken up quickly.

The drags about this hotel is the location which is located on top of a hill. If you're not in the best physical condition to climb steep hills, then you're better off taking the taxi to the entrance. The climb itself is not too bad though. There is a free shuttle bus which can take you to one of the temples as well as the Macau ferry terminal. The other drag is that there is no swimming pool. But with the warm and friendly service, and unbeatable rooms at this hotel; I would trade the pool anytime. There's a good reason why this hotel is rated so highly on this site. You certainly will not regret it. I'm coming back here on my return trip to Macau.

Stayed here one night during a recent trip to Hong Kong and Macau. Wish I booked more time in this hotel.

Location:
Hotel is located in the middle of Mong-Ha park near the north of Macau. You can take a public bus from the Ferry Terminal (we took bus No. 12) - Fare is $3.20 MOP. It will take a short walk up a hill. We found it easy but those with luggage may have trouble. The hotel is part of a large school that houses a hotel, restaurant, and school campus. It is away from all the major tourist attractions but Macau is very small so we found it easy to walk around the city.

Hotel:
This is a very nicely appointed hotel. It has an old world feel with modern luxuries. Upon arrival we were greeted with smiles from the staff who took the time to explain the hotel ammenities. They also gave us complimentary tickets to several local museums. We ordered the deluxe room. For an extra $100 MOP it is well worth it. The room is HUGE (20 x 10 ft) plus a large desk area and a shower room that has a massage shower unit that fits 2 people easily. Complimentary desk top computer, wifi, and mini-bar. Satin bathrobes, higher qualiy slippers, high thread count sheets, and feather pillows round out the offerings. We had the best sleep here after travelling many days in Hong Kong.

Food
We ate in the town for dinner but enjoyed the complimentary full breakfast buffet here. Staff was very attentive and the dining area was spacious and quiet - a big difference from the loud and crowded breakfast rooms we were used to in Hong Kong.

Staff
The staff here are very friendly and attentive. Many are students (likely finishing their diplomas) and are very willing to please guests. I can't say enough about them.

This hotel is among the best we have stayed in given the price. We will definitely come back again!

We had two rooms, one standard and one deluxe, both were in excellent conditions. Nice decorated in traditional portugise style, the bathrooms are clean and the beds very comfy.
The staff are very friendly, they did the best to help us in all ways. We tried the restaurant for lunch, and both food and wine were very good.
The only thing about Macau is how hard it is to get a taxi, the taxidrivers tried to make money on us, said they take us home if we payed 300 MOP for a trip that costed 50 MOP! We took the bus instead - just have the exact amount.
Will definately stay here next time we are in Macau.
