“Superb view - worth 10 minutes exercise - 'the' cityscape”

A brilliant cityscape of Macao, and well worth a visit. The church itself is uninteresting and nothing special, but the views over the emerging city are fabulous. Nearby is another viewpoint over to the harbour area and back towards the Sofitel Ponte 16. Yes it is a short walk up a small hill, and it can be warm and humid, but you are in the tropics and that won't be a surprise...the view might be! There is a small stall/cafe selling drinks and tourist tat, so you can reward your efforts and replenish lost energy. Don't take a taxi as you'll miss the atmospheric street on the way.

One of the few churches in this area not included within the UNESCO World Heritage designation for the Historic Centre of Macu, a visit to Our Lady of Penha is potentially worth making, not so much to see the actual church but to take advantage of the impressive views which can be had here.

Our Lady of Penha has a history dating back to 1622 yet it somehow managed to miss out on the World Heritage designation when 25 other similar area attractions were granted that status back in 2005. In truth, the church is rather simple and not much of a priority for those eager to visit Macau's nicer churches like St. Lawrence, St. Augustine and St. Dominic's (Senado Square). Also, the climb up to the church is not easy, especially on hot afternoons.

However, if you do make the climb, you might be rewarded with nice views of Macau and the bay that are found on all sides of the church. This is why many visit this church when viewing conditions are nice. When they are not, you might prefer to just take a pass on Our Lady of Penha Church and invest your limited time in Macau on more important and interesting attractions.

The Penha Church lies on a top of a hill, so you have to walk a LOT before arriving, which, with Macau's humid weather might be a bit tiring. But once there, you feel surrounded by the ambiance, specially if you choose a clowdy day to visit it.
The inside of the church itself is not bad, but my favourite area where really the building and the gardens/ourdoor spaces around it.

We decided to go to the chapel after visiting Ah-Ma Temple. Our biggest regret was not considering taking a cab to the chapel, thinking that it's just nearby. The tiring uphill walk probably took us approximately 15 minutes to reach the chapel. It's a simple church, however, it has a good view of Macau. Save some money from going to the Macau Tower.
