I found the stay at the Hotel Royal to be more than adequate and accommodated in a well sized and appointed room. The hotel has most facilities including a swimming pool and complimentary wi-fi is provided.I don't quite get the many comments about the need for taxis here.Public transportation is abundant and adjacent and the complimentary shuttle services in my view, meets the brief required of it.My personal observation is that most TA users do not expect to use taxis as their default transport mode.
My primary reason for visiting Macao was to get a flavour of its Portuguese and Chinese heritage. For this purpose, the Hotel Royal is very conveniently located for walking the Historic Centre of Macau Route.Take the number 7 bus from Rua F.do Amaral(a short walk to the bus stop,2 streets immediately below and parallel to the hotel) to A-Ma Temple and follow the signposts all the way back to the vicinity of the Royal.

Stayed here with a friend over Christmas and Boxing Day, and took a deluxe room. Perhaps it was the holiday weekend that we paid an otherwise uncalled-for premium for our stay in a rather cramped space for a deluxe room. So that's not really a cause for grief. But we really aren't fans of the inconsistent service. Some frontline staff were really charming, but others were apparently not fully trained or somewhat indifferent to customers. Take for instance the couple of room service guys who were sent to deal with the strong smell of cigarette smoke in our non-smoking room -- one even asked us what he should do???? (Try some de-odourising spray, shall we say?) Then, frontline staff simply told us we weren't entitled to breakfast though that was clearly included in our booking. And again, frontdesk staff gave us different info about access to spa shower facilities, and one indifferent person didn't bother to find out why and how to make amends till we insisted. So, in all, not a very nice experience at the hotel per se. The location, though, was great -- so very near places of interest like St Paul's and Senado Square, and various nice food joints.

Room Tip: Avoid the high season

I stayed there for 2 consecutive nights and got upgraded to the 15th Floor. The room is really nice and clean with comfy beds, nice air conditioning and no cigarette smell at all in the non-smoking room. Considering the high price of other Macau hotels, I think this is the best choice in Macau. In terms of location, it is actually quite convenient coz there is bus stop within 3 minutes' walk and complimentary shuttle service. I will definitely return..... I am actually checking the price now.

Overall it was a good stay, the only drawback of this hotel is little bit hard to get a taxi, so we gotta wait a little bit longer, so have to plan your trip earlier. But other than that, the hotel was great! The location was great for family with young children since at the lobby of the hotel, no visible casino nor night club. The staff was great as I was waiting in the line, waiting for check out, there was a Chinese man trying to get ahead of me, cut me in the line, but the front desk officers were refusing to serve him and asked him to get back in the line, superb action for the front desk officer! The room size was good, and the room was comfortable. The amenities were furnished in the room : toothbrush, soap and shampoo, and it would be even better if could be provided two each, instead of just one each in the room so we didn't need to share among us, friends, staying in the same room. The hotel was located in the central Macau, and close to Macau Fisherman Wharf, convenience store and a small local restaurant and they provided free shuttle service to Macau Ferry terminal. I think it would be even better if the free shuttle could go to Taipa, venetian area as well

This is my second stay here over a number of years ... I really like the location (about 15 minutes walk down to Senado Square, and 15 minutes up the hill to the Fort), and the modern rooms (stayed on higher 'premium' floor but view is not too exciting). To get to the new casino area (Cotai strip) either taxi (20 mins), or if you really want to save every penny, take either public bus or even free hotel shuttle to the ferry terminal, then one of the free casino buses.

We stayed here for three nights in early December, and were very happy with our stay. We were on one of the top floors, and our room had complementary wi-fi, was quite large and updated, and was supplied with bottled water daily, a kettle, and an assortment of tea and coffee. We had a little trouble finding the shuttle initially at the ferry terminal, as it's one of the smaller buses in the fleet of large casino shuttles. That said, it was convenient with service every half hour, and we took advantage of taking it back to the ferry terminal to hop another bus to the Cotai Strip one evening -- no need to pay for a taxi! The hotel also offers a free shuttle to several destinations around the city if you book ahead.

We appreciated the location -- within walking distance of St. Paul's, Largo de Senado, and if you are feeling ambition (as we were) A Ma Temple and the Mandarin's House. The staff was friendly and helpful, and while breakfast would have been nice, not having it gave us an excuse to check out a Portuguese bakery and other local options. Definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Worth it to see if you can upgrade for free to one of the higher floors, especially during low seaso...

As Macau is overpriced in general you should expect to pay more on average for a hotel stay. Too bad practically none of the hotels offer breakfast. But it's a decent enough hotel with a nice pool and the room was clean. To get to the cotai side, take a taxi it's cheap, same for going to the old city centre.

Room Tip: just a standard room will do
