“Best hotel to explore old Macau”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Spent 4 nights at this hotel after spending 2 nights at a brand new 5 stars at Cotai, and somehow I prefer Royal Hotel. Fast, friendly and efficient check in although I book the room on the same day I checked in. Warm atmosphere make me feel at home and welcomed. Took the executive room, it was ok, clean and properly sized. I could believe when I saw the toiletries brand were Aigner, yes, Aigner ! One negative thing is the bathroom wasn't equipped with a bathtub.
Nice lobby lounge with live jazz and nice restaurant with very reasonable price.

This hotel is perfect for exploring the old Macau city with its old building. Walking distance to St Paul Ruin and St Michael Cemetary.
I will stay in this hotel if I ever visit Macau again, best hotel in Macau but not for a gambler though.

Room Tip: Executive room will give you free access to breakfast and high-tea at the lobby lounge. A nice place...

There was NO signs to direct hotel guests to the shuttle bus service after exiting from the ferry terminal. We had to ask the staff from another hotel who was thankfully very friendly and helpful. Hope that this can be improved as shuttle bus service was included as one reason we chose this hotel.
The check-in queue was very long when we reached, and it was quite a wait. The staff was very friendly and helpful (maybe that's why the check-in process was so long, the staff was answering everyone's questions thoroughly. We asked for the map and was given one, with some directions how to reach the historical attractions. Our room was also upgraded and it was very comfortable. Love the big bed!
The hotel amenities provided was adequate, as we only stayed for one night, could not comment much about that.
Upon check-out, while waiting for the shuttle bus, there was an extremely long queue for that as well, as most people are heading towards the ferry terminal. The queue was outside the hotel, which was rather surprising. Thankfully, the weather was good. However, if it's too cold or too hot or raining, it would be a terrible wait outside the hotel for the shuttle bus.
Overall, will choose to stay again at this hotel for its value and comfort, but the shuttle bus has to be improved!

The check-in and check-out were hassle-free and the room was spacious and comfortable.
My complaints would be the poor wifi - always too many people using it - and the shuttle bus which only operates 11am and 5pm every day. You have to book early as it's always fully booked.

Firstly let me say that e hotel is very close - about 10 or 15 minute walk from all the historical attractions in Macau such as the ruins of st.Paul's cathedral or Senado square which features some of the oldest architectural interests in the city; furthermore, The Macau Museum is located on the top of the Macau fortress just beside the ruins of he cathedral.
The room was comfortable albeit a bit dated. There is a tall structure being built behind this hotel so if you don't want a view of the concrete foundations, I would request a room facing the main road.
The hotel has a nice sized pool which was a nice feature; the 'gym' consists of about 9 cardio machines (3 of each, elliptical, treadmill, and bikes).
Breakfast was not included but they have a lounge with pastries and finger-sized sandwiches for an extra $34. HKD (equivalent price is the Macau currency which is termed the Pataca).
Although I requested a non-smoking room, and there are signs for fines against smoking in hallways, be aware that there are smokers who will smoke in their rooms and the smell will permeate throughout the halls and into your room. If you want to avoid second hand smoke I would suggest you request a room transfer if you catch a hint of smoke upon your arrival.

If your purpose for going to Macau is to visit the casinos, I would NOT stay here but suggest you select the Wynn or Grand Lisboa which are in Macau itself, or you may select hotels like the Venetian etc which are on different islands accessible by free shuttles provided for by the Royal Hotel Macau. The shuttles run every 30 minutes and make their rounds to most of the major casinos I mentioned earlier. When leaving the other casinos, buses will take you to the ferry terminal upon which time you'd have to locate your hotel shuttle which departs from the terminal.

The best description for this hotel is adequate and it is certainly not up to the rating of five stars as advertised. The service is generally slow (and sometimes remains unfulfilled) and the bare minimum is provided presumably to meet the hurdle set to comply with a five star rating. For example the supply of coffee, tea or cream is but one component of each per room and requests for more elicit protracted responses, or no response at all, and at best the delivery of only one further item. The rooms are small and showing a certain weariness that, in my experience pertains to this type of older accommodation.

Having got rid of negatives the beds are comfortable, the rooms clean and the location of the hotel for those who wish to explore the old, heritage listed city, as we did, is perfect with almost everything within comfortable walking distance.

The staff do not appear to be highly or adequately trained but most of them spoke English and were able to communicate effectively with guests.

There is a hotel shuttle bus that leaves every 30 mins, at 5 and 35 after each hour, and this a perfect way to move around the various entertainment places of interest, the casinos, fisher men's wharf and the major ferry terminal but it is wise to ensure the driver knows your destination or you may be driven directly the the ferry terminal.

For those who might wish to gamble the hotel has a small casino on the first floor but it mostly comprise machines and for Australian readers it is but reminiscent of the Australian RSL clubs.

Overall conclusion well below average for a five star hotel

If you are looking for a hotel in mainland Macau with English-speaking attendants who can help you map out an itinerary, this should be your hotel of choice. Located right across Vasco de Gama park, and is 15-mins away from famous spots like Senado Square and Ruins of St. Paul, Royal Hotel is a 5-star hotel but not that too expensive. The rooms, especially comfort rooms are spotless. Wifi is not available but you'll have a cabled internet connection in each room.
Filipino hospitality at its best.
