“Nice at the first sight, well maintained garden but nothing special.”

Jardim de Vasco da Gama

I was staying in the hotel just across the street from the Park, the 13th floor with a good view of the "Jardim de Vasco da Gama", so I could admire it very well from the top.
All in all it is nothing special that is a square dedicated to the Portuguese navigator, a quiet place free access at any hour with a kids playground and a few benches here and there. There is also a large fountain surrounded by a very well maintained garden and bushes and in the inner center of it an half-length of Vasco da Gama standing in his memory.

The bright and wonderful garden designed befitting a known figure that is Vasco de Gama, was the wonderful sight that always greeted us in the morning upon waking up from our hotel window just across the Jardin. We stayed at Royal Macau Hotel and the Jardin was just a short walk across the street from the hotel.

The mornings, you'd find senior citizens practicing their daily morning exercise with brightly colored flags or brightly decored fans. The farther side of the garden from the hotel you'd find a mini playground of sorts for kids and senior citizens alike to further help exercise and spend a relaxing few minutes within the area. My parents enjoyed trying out the various steel exercise equipment taking time to pose for their children's camera.

A handful of tourists would pass by and take a few minutes to pose in front of the bust of Vasco de Gama at the center of the Jardin. The best time to drop by this area is early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

The Jardin is easily accessible when passing by on your way to find certain gift shops for needed items for gifts to friends and families at home. You'd pass by the place if you'd go by foot to reach the Senado Square or drop by convenience stores and mini casual food stops within the area. Just follow the pedestrian and the walkway on the side of the road to avoid any possible accidents due to fast moving automobiles.

The Vasco da Gama Garden is located along Rua Ferreira do Amaral and can be given a quick visit for those making there way to the attractions northeast of the city centre area including Tap Seac Square, Lou Lim Iok Garden and Flora Garden, where you find the cable car for visits to Guia Hill and Fortress. The garden as it stands today is not a priority visit but it does have an interesting link to Macau’s past.

The Vasco da Gama Garden was once part of a grand garden built along the old Avenida Vasco da Gama towards the end of the 19th century. Those days (and the avenue itself) are now long gone. Today this garden serves more as a modern public space with access to a large sports complex, some elderly exercise equipment and a small fountain with the featured bust of Vasco da Gama, built here in 1911.

The garden was given a bit of a makeover in recent years, though not sure exactly when. A winding water area was added to the lower levels and the fountain with water spouts, mentioned above was added to the upper level. This fountain and the Vasco da Gama bust are of interest if you want to have a quick look however the rest of the garden is presently more suitable for residents will be of little interest to most visitors to Macau.
