I wandered into the museum after seeing the ruins of St Pauls. There is a lot to see here including some canons up top the walls but it is better to go in the daytime as there are very little lights and there are very steep stairs that are uneven so if you go with children or the elderly...it could be a little dangerous getting up and down the stairs and walls. Beautiful history and scenery here! Especially when you climb to the top!

considering the ammount of tourists congregating in the old town squares and shuffling along the congested narrow pavements, the museum does not seem to attract that many visitors. Although the museum is not large, it does have a very wide, and comprehensive selection of artefacts on display which I think, overall fail to present and amplify the importance of Macau as a trading centre between the west, and the mainland. Very little 'play' is made on the Portuguese influence which significantly shaped the peoples of these islands.

Not that many cultural activities in Macao, so if you made the effort to climb the fortress hill it is worth spending an hour or so in that surprisingly modern and well presented historical Museum. There is nothing spectacular in it but the visit is cleverly organized, explanations are interesting, and you'll have a concentrated but rather exhaustive coverage of the history of the city.

The Macau Museum, the former official residence of the Portuguese governor, gives an extensive presentation of the history of Macau with many historical artifacts and it highlights the Macanese folk art and culture too. Far before Hong Kong it was the connecting harbor for trade to Shamian Island, Guangzhou, China. As a Dutchman I was surprised by the defeat of the Dutch when their invasion in 1622 turned out into a failure. Still a nice museum though with displays in English as well.
