“Finally I made it there!”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Having visited Macau many times, I finally managed to make the trip to the Coloane area where the church is located. It is also very near to the famous Lord Stow's cafe. The church is so beautiful...... I will definitely be back again soon

“A potentially important Catholic church in Macau that doesn't make the grade.”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

We recently visited St. Francis Xavier cathedral in Coloane village and were disappointed with what we found compared to the many nice church visits you can make in Macau.

This church, built in 1928, as the potential to be a very important place to visit as it supposed holds important relics, the bone fragments of the important historical figure, St. Francis Xavier. It also rests on an attractive small square, provides opportunity for this church to be a very good visit.

The exterior of the church is of the classic Baroque architectural design with Portuguese color scheme, which you can commonly find when visiting Macau's historical cathedrals. When we visited, there were rainbow coloured ornaments on the windows along with other decorations, which clashed badly with the traditional exterior.

We didn't find adequate signage with the church name or any historical information posted inside or outside concerning the churches history and its potential prize holdings - the relics. This would have been helpful for visitors.

Inside there is an image of Kun Iam, an odd addition to a Catholic church. The nave and alter areas are particularly small, can probably seat around 20-30 people at most and the inside is of a modern church decorative scheme, it is very brightly coloured, compared to the the traditional interiors you find when visiting other heritage cathedrals in Macau. For us, this didn't work very well nor was is something we expected from a church that supposedly housed relics of the great St. Francis Xavier.

To our disappointment, we found no relics on display in the church nor did we find any information in the church, suggesting that they were even here. We did find a single side room that has a tattered map of St. Francis' missionary works in Asia (would be nice for them to get a new map and laminate it so it won't weather and tear) that needs to be replaced along with other church furniture and daily use items, nothing non-church members would be interested in.

We felt perplexed when leaving the St. Francis Xavier church. It is a decent church for ongoing worshippers and potentially a nice place to spend time if you are a local but it doesn't, in its present state, warrant the time to visit for those in Macau for short visits. There are other more interesting and important cathedrals you can see in Macau. We's suggest that you start with those of the World Heritage collection first.

“A part and parcel to Coloane but not the end all and be all”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Having studied a few reviews before I made the trip to Macao, I must say I was quite intrigued by the church and some reviews raved about it however once I got there, all i saw was a very small church with very minimal decor inside it.

The hype
The church was made famous in Hong Kong due to a film that featured it as one of the location in the scene. The church was also made to commemorate the martyrs who died for a christian cause.

Location
Its location is bang right in the heart of the village of Coloane, a 5-10minute walk from Lord Stow's bakery or the bus top. If you walk along the Avneida de Cinco de outubro, you will definitely find it. You just cannot miss it.

The attraction
The attraction is probably the outer area of the church where there are cobbled stones and a statue that commemorates the martyrs. What's worth noting is that there is a Portuguese restaurant next to it and the food they serve is rather enticing.

Once you go inside the church you will be absolutely disappointed since there is nothing of historic value that remains. The scale of the church is very small compared to the other churches in Macao. There are 2-3 rooms available for looking at. The second floor is closed to the public. In each room, you see activities that Macao Christians hold but presented in an amateurish way.

Verdict
Do go visit this church if you are visiting Coloane otherwise do not waste time with it. The reason for the average star given is because of the other better attractions and nice eateries that surround it. Go look at the photos and you will see what I mean.

“Phenomenal Architecture”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

The architecture of the church is just phenomenal. The statues inside the church prescribe the history themselves. The place is so beautiful and so peaceful that one would like to spend hours with conscience towards the Almighty.
