On 13th Dec 2012, me and my wife stop-by at Margaret’s Café e Nata for tea and to taste their famous Portuguese egg tarts which many had opined to be equal or second only to the much acclaimed original Portuguese egg tarts from Lord Stow’s.

When we arrived, we found a long queue outside Margaret’s Café e Nata and the whole place was packed with dine-in customers. I was a little surprised that the wait wasn’t too long as the turnover rate of customers was very fast. Almost all the customers were there just to pickup some Portuguese egg tarts for takeaways or to sample the famous Portuguese egg tarts with a cup of tea or coffee.

The set up at Margaret’s Café e Nata is surprisingly small and casual – there is hardly any room inside the café itself except a small display shelve for cakes and a counter to place order, plus a cashier to collect money from customers. The bakery workshop is located at the back room area and workers would pack customers order according to the orders received and hand it over to the customer whom were waiting to collect their orders after making payment.

Margaret’s Café e Nata is basically a retail bakery cafés, serving coffee and tea to customers who wish to consume the baked products on the premises. Outside Margaret’s Café e Nata, there are some garden tables and benches for dine-in customers which were fully utilized.

Coming to the question as to which version of Portuguese egg tarts is the best, I would opine that all freshly baked Portuguese egg tarts taste best when it is just out from the oven. The same product can have a difference between dine-in and takeaways due to the time lapse and also you could have formed a biased opinion when you were hungry. So, let’s try not to make a comparison based on memories – be it from Lord Stow’s, Margaret’s Café e Nata or Florinda Café at Macau Ferry Terminal, Shun Tak Centre, Hong Kong, lets enjoy this unique Portuguese egg tart without any bias, except your personal preference.

There will be a line because they do the tarts in batches. Will take 10 minutes at most. Limited seating but quick turnover, so shouldn't be a problem. Egg tarts were wonderful. Warning-not the easiest place to find so bring a map.

Went with a party of 6 and managed to find seats at the benches right outside the cafe.

Great egg tarts for breakfast and the tune sandwiches were surprisingly good too.

Don't expect much from the service and manners of the staff, the food makes up for it.

It is a nice and hot egg tart fresh from oven but no wow factor. At the time I visit this store in the morning, the queue is quite long but manageable.

I prefer Lord Stow's egg tart in Coloane.
