“ANOTHER GREAT STAY”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

We had another great week at this hotel. An excellent and swift check-in with well-mannered and polite receptionists. E-mailed hotel prior to arrival asking for a room in a specific block and on a specific floor and my request was granted. Beds were a little hard on the first night but we asked for a mattress topper the next morning which was fitted when housekeeping cleaned the room.

The hotel tour at 11.00am every Friday morning starting from the reception was really good and informative taking in many unseen places, such as the kitchen, laundry etc. We were also informed that the staff were taking English lessons. Over the week we saw the lifeguard testing the water in the pools whilst on duty and members of staff having life-saving training in the pool. The pool was never cold.

The evening entertainment was really great compared to last year, even the entertainment teams premiere of We Will Rock You was well presented and received by the holidaymakers.

The food was once again of the highest quality with a greatly improved variety of desserts with not so much of the mousse type offerings. The coffee at breakfast was certainly not strong and bitter as you usually get in hotels both here and overseas. If you go in the covered terrace for meals it is as good as eating outside. You are given a table for evening meal but if this is not the place for you they will change it . It is easy to buy your water from the hotel gift shop for 1 euro for 5 litres and then you don't have far to carry it.

The only one downside during our stay was that Friday and Saturday seemed busier than the rest of the week which we think was probably due to islanders (locals) making up the numbers.

We will definitely return.

We can see why so many people who want a great hotel holiday in a quiet location come back to this hotel time and again – the hotel itself and the staff really are very good and we agree with many of the previous TA reviews. We won’t repeat much of what has already been written about the hotel but hopefully, the additional details below will assist readers who are considering this hotel.

We hadn’t previously stayed in Puerto Mogan and the last time we visited by car in the early 2000’s the hotel site was just a scratch on the ground. The new motorway link, which was only opened early 2013, also means you no longer have to use the winding coast road from Puerto Rico to get to the resort. Nowadays, it’s only 35 minutes direct from the airport to Puerto Mogan.

The hotel is built on the floor of Puerto Mogan valley where it backs against cliffs on the eastern side and slopes gently towards the sea. But it never quite reaches the sea as some earlier low rise development sits between the lowest part of the hotel and Puerto Mogan beach. Standard bedrooms are spread over 7 blocks (A to G on hotel plan) of between 3 to 5 floors that are totally separate from a glass topped atrium building housing reception, plus other things like the main buffet restaurant, a la carte restaurant, evening club room, reading room and more. There are also a dozen rooms with mini balconies above another restaurant and bar by the lower of the hotel’s 2 heated pools, (block H), but we don’t know if these are the single rooms, or what. Junior suites are almost hidden away in numerous small blocks surrounded by gardens at the lowest part of the complex (called block J on hotel plan). The footprint for a hotel of about 450 rooms is huge and the lush, well established tropical gardens surrounding the various blocks extend to about 2.5 acres. We’ve stayed in a number of hotels with lovely gardens but we think these must be the best and most extensive we have ever seen.

We stayed in a top floor standard room in block B so we can’t give any information about the junior suites. There are no long (often dark) hotel corridors at Cordial Mogan – rooms in each block are accessed by open walkways and the lifts are also separate from the bedroom blocks. The rooms in blocks B, C, D & F only face one way. Blocks B & C back onto the cliff face and balconies look west over the top pool – even the planting behind these blocks against the cliff face is superb. Block D backs onto an archaeological site within the hotel grounds and the rooms face north, also looking out over the top pool. The rooms in block F are west facing and overlook the private outside space of the hotel’s little used spa. The bedrooms in blocks A, E & G effectively form 3 sides of a rectangle and their walkways to the room back onto beautifully planted courtyards. Some of the rooms in block A face south west and overlook the top pool and some of the rooms in G face pure south and are the only rooms apart from those in H that overlook the bottom pool. One side of block A faces towards the sister apartment complex, Cordial Mogan Valle, that is right behind the hotel just a bit further into the valley and a few of these rooms look directly at the side walls of the nearest apartments – we think these could be the rooms that guests would be least happy with – we think virtually all the others are rooms with good aspects.

Standard rooms here are a reasonable size – they’re not the largest you’ll ever get, but they’re by no means anywhere near the smallest. Sound insulation between rooms wasn’t too bad, certainly better than in many places we’ve stayed. We think all standard rooms like ours probably have 2 x one metre wide beds rather than a double – but that’s fairly normal for Spain. The mattress was really good quality but it was very firm, possibly bordering on hard, so if you have a tendency to suffer from pain at pressure points, you’d be wise to ask for the mattress toppers that are on offer. We didn’t, but we wished we had. We reckon the bedroom area itself measures about 17.5 sq mtrs and has a separate self-closing door between it and the wardrobe/bathroom/room entryway, which adds about another 14 sq mtrs, so that’s about 31 to 32 sq mtrs for the room in total, plus another 6 to 7 sq mtrs for the balcony. We love a bedroom door when we’re staying in hotels with noisy corridors but that doesn’t seem to happen here, it’s lovely and peaceful and the open walkways help, so we just propped it open. The bathroom, with an opaque fixed window, is much bigger than normal for this grade of hotel. You get a separate loo, single basin, over-bath shower with glass side screen (no separate cubicle in standard rooms), large bath sheet towels, a reasonable hairdryer, and even good lighting, which is not the case in many hotels. The shower pressure was excellent and there was always lots and lots of piping hot water. As others have mentioned, as a green hotel, you choose when you want your sheets and towels changed. Although we didn’t use it ourselves, the 32 inch flat screen TV had 15 English language channels listed, and these weren’t just news channels, there were entertainment channels as well. The no charge WiFi was excellent throughout the hotel and grounds, although it did slow down late afternoon; we guess that’s probably when lots of people started using it after going back to their rooms. Unlike the WiFi, you have to pay €18 a week for the safe, which we think is a bit over-priced. The dividers between balconies are not floor to ceiling like in some places so if you’ve got noisy neighbours or if they smoke, you’ll certainly notice.

We were pleased to see that sunbed baggers aren’t much of a problem here. And all credit to the hotel owners, they’ve obviously done their best to supply as many sunbeds and parasols as possible, but that does mean they’re squashed together like sardines in some places. But there’s one aspect of the pool and sunbathing areas that we think is horrible, and so do others we spoke with. A high percentage of the sunbathing terraces comprises nasty grey grit – we guess someone sometime decided this would be a good idea, perhaps to make it look like some sort of beach area, but it’s not. Yes, unless you’re very unlucky, you should be able to get a bed away from the grit, but, in our view, management should take steps to tile over these areas, and if they want to keep a beach style sunbathing area, then create one that’s actually made of sand, like they do in other hotels. By the way, the large Cordial pool towels are a really good size and quality. The hotel Spa is a bit of a white elephant and was totally empty most days - that's probably because it costs €18 just to sit on their sunbeds and use the pool.

Despite the numbers of rooms, although we guess the hotel wasn’t more than 2/3rds full, but we were very, very pleased to find the buffet restaurant was so much more ‘civilised’ than in many hotels we’ve stayed at. It never seemed to be a real ‘bun fight’ at the food counters like elsewhere. There are two sittings for dinner and some people may not like that but it does mean that you don’t get the normal ‘bunching effect’ when 70% of hotel guests all try and sit down to dinner between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. We can’t speak for vegetarians, but as meat eaters, we think the quality and choice of meats you get on the evening buffet here was probably the best we have ever experienced, anywhere. If we had any criticisms, we didn’t think much of the desserts, but that’s probably our personal taste, and we thought the hard, overcooked pastries in the morning for breakfast, every morning, were very disappointing. We ate in the a la carte restaurant one night. If you’re on Half Board you get a €15pp allowance against your bill. Truthfully, we didn’t fancy any of the starters, and the desserts weren’t particularly enticing, but the main courses were sublime. Plus you get a complimentary glass of Cava when you sit down and an amuse bouche too. The house wine list also had quite a number of reasonably priced wines that won’t break the bank. Our fillet steak main courses were so good that we think it’s worth going a la carte at least once, if only for a main course. And the service was first class too.

Hopefully, the detailed information above will add to all other information posted by other reviewers. We were Cordial Mogan virgins but we had high hopes based on previous TA reviews. The hotel definitely lived up to expectations and we love this hotel. We’re sure we’ll be joining the ever increasing numbers of guests who return, although we doubt it’ll be as often as the Norwegian gentleman who says in his TA posting that he’s been to the hotel 19 times in the 9 and a half years since it opened! If you’re going to return, make sure you join the Cordial Club so you can get some discount on subsequent visits. The hotel definitely deserves a score of 5/5 overall, but because the grey grit sunbathing areas are so horrible, we’re only giving 4/5 on TA’s official rating system and hope management will rethink these sunbathing areas and do something about them. Once this review is published we’ll upload some photos.

Room Tip: Try to avoid north facing rooms in Block A

Wow! What a hotel. We booked it 5 years ago but had to cancel due to health reasons but always had aspiration to visit and we finally achieved it in June. We were not let down, Everything that has been said about this hotel is true so I won't repeat it, save to say we had a fantastic time and it will be our No. 1 choice for a "chill out" holiday in the future. The little touches also really contribute to the experience. We arrived late evening and were offered the usual welcome drink, but also a picnic bag as we had missed dinner. We were also told we could get a voucher for lunch on our last day to compensate and this was given without question. At check out we were informed that we could use the courtesy suite provided for changing as we had an evening flight home. All freely offered without having to ask. Fridge and hairdryer provided in room and we could get supplies from a good supermarket almost opposite. It's nice when everything works and it does here so we are likely to become regulars. Well done Cordial Mogan Playa, you ticked all our boxes and we will be back soon.

Room Tip: We stayed on 3rd floor, with pool view so I would recommend this or higher. Lifts work perfectly wel...

My wife and I stayed here 11 through 25 June 2014 after booking the fly/hotel package through Monarch (Cosmos). As a retired professional construction consultant I judged this an impressive designed functional hotel about ten years old in a discerning location away from the angst of the very busy resorts of Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, Playa de Ingles..... so more suitable for those preferring a quieter resort without noisy night clubs and boisterous watering holes. Staff and management friendly and helpful, beautiful landscaped gardens, well maintained swim pools and sufficient sun beds and umbrellas. Buffet breakfast and dinners very good and varied so not too repetitive as plenty of choice. Personally we found the beds a little too hard and would have preferred pillows to bolsters but everything else about this hotel compensated for these and no noise at night ensured a good nights sleep. Enjoyed regular 10 to 15 minute morning and evening walks through the hotel gardens down to the beach and very picturesque fishing resort of Mogan Playa with is cosy restaurants bars and shops/small supermarkets. Hired a car and spent 3 days exploring the mountains, coast, villages and Las Palmas on excellent roads save those in the mountains which were challenging but very enjoyable to drive on. The hotel is about 40 minutes by taxi from the airport and circa 55 minutes from the centre of Las Palmas. We took the excellent local buses to Maspalomas and the lighthouse and walked along the board walk to the sand dunes in Maspalomas where there is a nice yellow sandy beach and up-market shopping west of the lighthouse. We tend not to re-visit holiday locations and hotels but would definitely return to this hotel as it exceeded our expectations

Room Tip: We stayed on the quieter South side facing the second swim pool and the sea - room 7125 on the Ist f...

I was a guest of Cordial Valle and I only came with my family to watch a show in that hotel. It was amazing. This hotel is so beautiful and have awesome and friendly staff. I had so much fun and I enjoyed spending there few times. The only thing I'm not happy about is that I didn't spend any night in that hotel.
Maybe next year.

What a wonderful hotel to relax and chill out in. My wife and I just wanted to put our feet up, read or take a stroll. We got them all and a lot more besides.
I find it very hard to fault this hotel, it has a very high standard of finish to entrance lobby, rooms, grounds, and pool areas. The food and restaurants were as good as I have ever experienced, the staff were friendly, helpful and polite.
My one minor complaint was the beds were very hard! But even this could be sorted,(as I found out on my last day), by requesting a mattress top!!
If you want a quite relaxing holiday in wonderful surroundings, then look no further.
Great place to stay.

Room Tip: The hotel is ver extensive, request a room close to the main reception overlooking the pool area.
