i was looking foward to going back to Lombok and Gili islands after 12 years and was not disappointed! very little had changed but that was just what we wanted!
This resort on the quiet side of Gili Trewangan was just perfect .... the villas were so unique in their traditional design ... we were very comfortable with just the fan over the biggest romantic bed surrounded by mosquito nets and the view of the ocean :-) The open air bathroom is great too.
The service and the food could not be beaten at Des Dunia Beda .... the seafood so good and cheap! highly recommend eating on deck .... watch the sun go down with cocktails and dine under a full moon was so romantic!! so romantic that there was a proposal of marriage!!
Gili Trawangan is great to explore during the day ... we would walk around the island and then have beers and lunch in the "busy" part of the island!
The snorkling just off the beach in front of the resort was fantastic .... so many fish!
We would definatly return to Desa Dunia Beda any day!

We were on the verge of leaving Gili and heading straight back to Bali after checking in to the characterless Samba Villas on the scruffy main drag; so I'm so glad we gave Gili Trawangan another chance by walking around the island to look for somewhere better. There are many much nicer places on the quieter side of the island, away from the madding crowds, and the prettiest of all is Desa Dunia Beda.

The Javanese villas are beautifully done, all carved wood and gorgeous furniture with a vast bed hung with muslin drapes. My husband loved the huge bathroom open to the sky, with its artfully placed urn of fresh water for rinsing after the salt water shower. It looked like something out of Mr and Mrs Smith or Wallpaper - ethnic slash minimalist. The view from our verandah looked straight out through a rustic driftwood fence to the beach and ocean.

The staff were friendly and helpful, there are good eateries not far away and the main drag is only a short horsecart trip away if you want it. Hiring bikes was a nice idea but quite frustrating as there are too many patches of deep sand where you have to get off and push. The diving wasn't amazing sadly as most of the coral here has been dynamited, but we saw turtles and pretty fish while snorkelling.

The beach is narrower and more pebbly where Desa Dunia is located than some other parts of the island, but the boardwalk is a very romantic place to watch the sun set. Some evenings a local guy with snorkel gear went into the water with a spear at dusk and emerged half an hour later with a couple of fish. We would check out his catch, the hotel would buy the fish from him for us, and cook it straight away on the barbecue then serve it to us in the gazebo on the baordwalk. I think it was the best fish I've ever had.

I can't find any better place to stay at Gili Trawangan. For those who love nature, want to get away from crowd, find secluded and peaceful place, this is it. You can snorkel right in front of the hotel and find colorful fish. It took about 25 minutes to walk from hotel to the island main attractions, hire a cidomo for 20000rp, or rent a bike for 35000/day. We booked through lombok-network.com, but don't pay 35$pp for transfer. Transfer to the gili from Selaparang airport is easy, find airport taxi booth at the airport, you will pay fixed rate to Bangsal. From Bangsal, take a boat to gili.

Looking for a nice getaway, we were pleased when we first arrived at Desa Dunia in July 2006. The place was private, quiet, picturesque with exotic Balinese furnishings. The beach was very murky there so we took a horsecart to the other side of the island for our watersport activities - but we did not mind that and looked forward to a pleasant time in the resort. However the problem started right after sundown on the first day. We were attacked by hundreds of mosquitos and flies - we even had to eat our dinner in bed which was covered by mosquito net. The smal desk fan and the big ceiling fan did not deter them at all. I was covered in big red bites which lasted for a year. Later on, the cavalry arrived - a dozen of gigantic cockroaches crawling out, exploring our clothes and the washing area. They then congregated on our mosquitoe net and tried to find a way in for the whole night. The staff was polite and eager to please but the service quality was just medium, they did not even register that we got big bugs in our house- and the food was terrible. We even got bothered by biting insects while using the outside toilet and shower, which only gave out freezing salty water. We felt as if we were starring in one of those "holiday from hell" TV programmes we had seen on BBC previously. In my backpacker day I travelled quite a lot in South East Asia but had never seen so many cockroaches in one place. Desa Dunia was supposed to be a upmarket retreat, not a bug infested hell hole like that. At the end we cut short our stay there and moved somewhere else in the same island instead. I don't think I will ever forget the Desa Dunia nightmare.

Cher Monsieur,

We came to Desa Dunia Beda for our honeymoon. We stayed three nights. We paid 113 $ pr. night - quite expensive, considering we were the only guests at the hotel. It felt very deserted and we knew, that we were the only reason the cook, had to be at the hotel for the whole day. In the morning we were served breakfast right next to the beach; it was lovely - but yet again, we felt all alone on the Island, and it was almost too much. Desa Dunia Beda was a beautiful place, but I would prefer to stay ind the 'town', if I ever return to Gili Trawangan (which in fact was a fabulous Island, so I might. The only negative to say about the Island was the way they treated their horses, which they used for their small wagons. It was awfull to witness.). In short: The Desa Dunia Beda was too isolated and too expensive.

Desa Dunia Beda (lit: Different World's Village)

Website: [---]

Stayed there on: November 13 - November 16, 2006.

Rate: USD 85 Nett per night including breakfast.

Transport from Selaparang Airport to the Hotel cost USD 60 one way. (45 minutes by car from Selaparang Airport + 15 minutes speedboat ride to Gili Trawangan (Trawangan island) + 15 minutes by Cidomo, a horse-drawn carriage)

Period to avoid is late November to early February. This period is the rainy season, there will be a lot of mosquitos there.

I am not sure how to rate this hotel, since I believe that people would rate a hotel from different prespective. For those who like tranquility and new experience, this hotel would be a five star plus. However, those who are looking for modern and full facility accomodation, they might put this hotel in a list of one star hotel or maybe even less.

We arrived in this hotel by "Cidomo", a traditional horse-drawn carriage, around midday. The location of it is in the middle of nowhere, only a stone throw away from the beach. There are total of 7 bungalows available, and all of them are "Joglo" (traditional Javanese' home) shaped. There are one swimming pool with sun deck, surrounded by garden.

The bungalow itself are made from wood with stone foundation. It was raised a bit from the ground, so there is a few steps up before you reach the terrace. Upon entering the bungalow, you will see a large bed with mosquito screen right at the center. On your left will be 2 traditional chairs with a small coffee table and a smaller bed where you can lie down while reading, or maybe for an afternoon nap. On your right there were a writing desk with one chair, and a small tebla where you will find the telephone (yes, it is the only modern equipment you'll see in the room) and an old electric fan (from the 50s) which are surprisingly in a good working condition. Please note that there are no TV in the room.

There a lot of windows surrounding you, which you need to open all if you want a fresh air. There are a total of 6 windows, 2 opens to the terrace, and the other 4 are facing the garden.

Behind the bed you will see a wardrobe, washbasin, and changing area enclosed by a wooden partition. But the most interesting is the bathroom.

The bathroom door are exactly behind the bed. When you open it, you will see stairs coming down to a very spacious bathroom. The tiolet is on your left, and the shower on the right side. When you look up, you will not see any ceiling, since this is an open air bathroom. However, there is no need to worry since the bathroom are surrounded by 3 metre walls, so no one will be able to see you when you're bathing under the sky.

The shower is quite special too. It is a stone sculpture in the shape of traditional Javanese mask where the mouth is where the water sprouts out. Since the island is quite small, the shower water is actually a filtered sea water. It takes time to get used to having shower with salt water, but soon you'll enjoy it.

If you prefer not to use the salt water to bathe, the hotel provides a limited quantitiy (about 50 litre) of fresh water per day. There is an earthenware complete with a traditional scoop made from coconut shell for you to store the fresh water. The fresh water given are enough for at least 1 bath for each person each day.

The location is very secluded, there will be only a handful people passing the hotel daily. At night the atmosphere is very relaxing. Inside the bungalow and on the tarrace they are using a yellow-coloured lamps so it gives a really dark and romantic feeling. The best thing you can do in the afternoon is to sit on the large wooden divan watching the sun goes down.

The surrounding garden will be quite dark at night, but there are adequate lighting around if you need to walk to the restaurant cum front desk.

The area is quite safe, you may sleep with all your windows open. This also guarantee fresh air throughout the night. The freshest wind would come around 2 am onwards, which was cooling and refreshing.

You will see no one at the restaurant most of the time. But when you decide to have a meal there, the chef are ready to cook your selection from their menu. The price are quite high for the food, but the quality is also not bad. They have quite a wide variety from a traditional nasi goreng (fried rice) to steak and other european food.

Since this hotel is in the middle of nowhere, if you want to have dinner outside, or if you want to go to the activity centre, you need to take the Cidomo to a place where the local called "Central". The one way Cidomo ride to Central cost Rp. 20,000 (Approx USD 2 / Euro 2). At the central there are more variety of foods, from cheap traditional coffee shop ("warung") which sells a plate of rice with variety of local dishes for only Rp. 6,000 - 7,500 ( under USD 1 / Euro 1), to a more up class eating place which may cost you at least USD 10 per person.

Finally, I would like to let you all to rate this hotel by by yourself. Let me warn you, if you are a typical Asian who would like to stay in a place with all the amenities and full facility, this hotel is NOT for you. But if you are a person who love nature at it's best, this is definitely a hotel for you to stay. The person from the hotel told us that there were almost no asian guest so far, since it seems that Asians are unable to appreciate the nature and simplicity of the hotel.

The "ideal" length of stay in this hotel is around 2 to 3 nights. But if you want to rest totally and cut yourself from the craziness of this world, you might want to spend 1 week there.
