Hotel Vila Ombak
Ranked #8 of 37 Hotels in Gili Trawangan
Reviewed August 19, 2013 via mobile

My family and I stayed at Vila Ombak in the beginning of August for 6 days. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel, which has an excellent location. Under Bpk Mada's leadership, the staff are service-oriented and friendly. Our two boys, aged 9 and 13, loved the open air cinema in the evening and in general the many possibilities on offer at Gili Trawangan.

We will definitely be coming back!

The hotel was recommended by my brother for seven of us in our latest family trip to Indonesia. I was fully aware of the hotel mixed reviews on Trip Advisor but just to give it the benefit of doubt and as the hotel offered a great discount, we eventually booked two family bungalows for three days including transfer arranged from our first stay at Senggigi beach to Gili Trawangan then BIL airport. The transfer to island was flawless as they have their own private jetty in both sides. In the island we were greeted with welcome drink with swift check-in and pleasantly surprised to find two spacious, very clean and comfortable bungalows close to the pool for us. The room is large enough to accommodate four adults with two king beds, satellite TV, fridge, minibar, coffee/tea, fruits and importantly AC. I can enjoy the outdoor bathroom which partly covered by a small tree but still left my wife a little uneasy. The water from the shower and sink is slightly salted but we can use fresh water from a large container to rinse ourselves. We can accept this as clearly a great way to preserve freshwater in the island as they have to actually either ship them from the main island or through desalination. The hotel has a scenic/manicured garden with trees and some hammocks hanging around. There are lots of wonderful local ethnic items around the hotel and candle lights during the night makes them more beautiful.
The hotel is situated on the best part of the island (southwest) with wonderful white sandy beach. It is only a short walk to get to the best restaurants in the island, bars, a clinic, ATM and other amenities and yet it is very peaceful and quite inside the complex. They have a new sister hotel complex on the quieter west side of the island that we could choose but we opted for this eastern side complex (sunrise side) due to its easier access. The staffs are very friendly, courteous and professional; we found this in particular as we experienced large earthquake just within an hour of our stay that forced us to run outside the rooms. The staffs quickly calmed us and made sure that we were all fine. We were later informed that a lot of damaged happened in northern part of Lombok island but saved the Gilis. We were also then assisted a lot by one of the hotel’s manager, Mr. Made Mada throughout our stay.
We were very impressed with the free daily breakfast buffet which provides lots of varieties of both western and local foods including my favorite “bubur ayam”. We didn’t have dinner at the hotel neither to many other great restaurants around as we opted to venture the varieties of food stalls at art market complex (around island main port at northern part of the hotel). Most local foods here are really great, please don’t miss this one.
Our family enjoyed immensely from snorkeling around the island or by just dipping in the hotel’s salt water pool the way other hotel pools in Gili Trawangan. They have a new, better and covered by the trees pool area as part of the new ‘Pearl of Trawangan’ wing in the complex. We also spent quite an ample of time just by relaxing and laying down on the wonderful covered beach strip of the hotel with lots of bag beans and biking with kids around this small island. You can also rent a boat for snorkeling/diving from the hotel or join in with other groups through outside agents. The breathtaking sunrise can be viewed from the hotel’s beach but we had to bike toward a spot at southwestern part of the island for the sunset. Our final leg to Bali was again flawless, though we have to depart early in the morning. We were provided a single large boat just for our family continued by a new bus which directly dropped us to BIL airport by a very nice and professional driver (forgot to note his name).
Overall, it was a fabulous stay at Vila Ombak and without doubt the highlight of our family trip to Indonesia. The hotel is absolutely recommended! And we’ll definitely stay again in our next two year trip while some of our family friends from TX will be there as early as spring 2014. Special thanks to Mr. Mada who had enabled our stay more enjoyable.

Everything about this hotel is excellent, especially the service. Tha facility is beautiful clean everything that you want. I come from a retail background so good service with a smile is important to me and I could not fault it. The outdoor bathroom was very unique and peaceful, yes there is some mould but remember this is a very humid country and would be hard to stay on top of this completely. If you want 5 star plus, stay in the huge cities but if you want an island holiday stay here. This is an island in 3rd world country and we found it very relaxing & peaceful

Room Tip: We had the outdoor bathroom and found it absolutely gorgous

We booked Villa Ombak for four nights. Upon arriving on Friday morning at 11am, we were informed by the hotel manager that they did not have room for us in the hotel, that they were fully booked, despite us having booked months ago. He told us that we would be "upgraded" for the first night to Sunset Ombak and then would be able to return for the remainder of our four night stay the following day. I informed him that I did not want to stay at Sunset Ombak because it is miles away from anywhere and completely isolated on the island, that we had booked Villa Ombak because of it's central location. He said that they had a deal with Agoda whereby if they are fully booked, customers are upgraded to the other hotel. On the booking it clearly states that all rooms are guaranteed. Had I known that there was a chance that we would be moved, I would not have booked this hotel.

Eventually we moved because we felt we had no choice. Upon arrival at the other hotel, which was as expected, completely isolated from any other location on the island, we were told that we had to wait two hours for our room to be ready. We had lunch and waited two hours. When we returned to the check in, we were taken to our rooms. Upon arrival at the room it was clear that not only were our rooms not ready, they hadn't even begun the cleaning process. So we complained and had to wait ANOTHER hour before our rooms were ready. Then when we went to the pool at 3pm, we were told that towels were finished for the day, despite only just being given our room. I told the desk I would like a complimentary dinner because of not being able to eat anywhere else due to being isolated, which they complied. In the restaurant, along with all of the other guests, we waited nearly two hours for our food, and when it arrived it was cold, things missing and basically inedible. Then, despite them saying that we could have our food for free, they still tried to charge us for the food upon check out.

We checked in finally to the Villa Ombak on the second day. We were told that we would have to wait until 3pm for our rooms, even though check in is at 2pm. Upon complaining again, they finally allowed us to have our rooms at 2pm. By this time, we had wasted two days of our holiday nearly as because of all of the mix ups, we didn't settle until after 3pm or 4pm at the beach or swimming pool and even begin to relax.

I understand that sometimes over bookings happen and this could be a one off. However upon returning to Villa Ombak we witnessed multiple families being moved again the second day, and the day after that. Clearly this was a complete scam. I told two families to stand their ground and not move as the service at the 2nd hotel we had received was so poor and it clearly was not an upgrade. Upon them arguing and refusing to move, Villa Ombak suddenly found rooms for them, so clearly had them all along and was lying to the guests. I believe that they were holding these rooms for the walk ins that they would receive from the pier from people who had not booked, and moving the people who had booked, or looked like they wouldn't argue, to the hotel that not as many people were booking because of it's location.

Agoda is promoting this hotel and guaranteeing rooms there when this is not happening. There is a gold circle award from Agoda on the desk of the hotel, and multiple other award certificates on the wall, and clearly this should not be the case as they are ripping off their guests. I read countless reviews on trip advisor where guests talked about rude staff, and staff lying and ripping off their guests. One even said that they had been threatened and told that they would "get them" as a result of him complaining.

Although it is a nice hotel with a fantastic location, this is only the case, if you actually receive what you book and pay for, and our experience is that many people didn't. So if you don't want a chance of this happening to you, AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS.

I booked online for Vila Ombak and they accidentally overbooked for that time so my family and I were upgraded for free. We ended up in a private villa with our own pool, outdoor kitchen, full minibar, a king-sized and a queen-sized bed and a massive outdoor bathroom. I was incredibly impressed with the cleanliness, the professionalism of the staff and the quietness of the area we were in. You cannot hear your neighbours from inside your villa and the room service is quick, efficient and delicious. I was so happy staying there and only wish I could have stayed longer. While it is expensive, if you are looking for true luxury and want to feel like an upper-class individual, this is the place to do it!

Booked this hotel on the strength of the Trip Advisor reviews but have to say that we found this far from luxurious. Our rooms were fairly basic and the outdoor bathroom was a nightmare for mosquitos etc.
The buffet breakfast was a chaotic to say the least and the checking in procedure was the longest Ive ever experienced.

Booked a Deluxe Ombak room for 6 nights but only stayed 1.
Every where you read about this Hotel states it is luxury but sorry to say it is far from it.
Bathroom dirty, mildew & pealing paint on walls .Toilet wouldn't flush & room safe didn't work but both were fixed promptly.
For $250/ night it is very over priced & there are better places to stay on Gili T.
Pool area in major need of repair.
In fairness the manager was very understanding & offered an upgrade but this Hotel was not for us & thankfully were able to be refunded.
