Hotel Ombak Sunset
Ranked #12 of 37 Hotels in Gili Trawangan
Reviewed July 20, 2013

Ombak Sunset is located on the "far side" of Gili Travangan. Which means that waliking to downtown is about 40 minutes. On roads that are unlighted at night and sometimes covered in sand or water. Horse carriages are 75000 IRD per trip - not exactly cheap and we think that a resort like Ombak Sunset could much improve their (BTW excellent!) restaurant utilization by providing free and maybe electrified transport to the hotel (we pitied the poor horses very much). Rooms are gorgeous, pool is enormous, but staff is a little bit limited by fixed standards. We asked for less intrusive music at the sunset happy hour (which is obvioulsy the hotel's asset) and were told that the boom-boom stuff was the "standard" that can't be changed.

The Gilis are a must! What a great trip, and wonderful hotel! Staff was very nice, spa was great, and was a dream stay! I wish we would have had more than 4 days! I love that the islands are so small that there are only bikes and horse cabs, no cars or motorbikes!

Was staying here last year on november 2012 and it was a good choose because this resort have a beautiful beach in front of the hotel with lovely gazebos and restaurant settings. It was low season and upon arrival we got free upgrade to a villa which cost twice of our original room reservation. The hotel design it self is traditional with high quality amenities. Quite far from the central of the island, so it really peaceful and relaxing. Our villa is quite huge and the best part, we have a private garden at the back with open air shower.

The free 30 minute back massage was great. Really enjoy it.

Breakfast was in a set and great. Will be better if it was a buffet.

The price of renting bicycle directly from this hotel quite high compare to rental you can find in island central area. it cost Rp120000/day where as in central you can get around Rp80000/day. But the bicycles from this hotel all in very good shape.

This is a very late review.
My now husband and I were on holiday in Bali in October 2011.

We stayed at Hotel Villa Ombak (other side of the island), the Sunset's sister hotel which was quite busy and not enough chairs around the pool for all the guests, plus our air conditioning went down constantly so we went in search of somewhere cooler.

We walked around the island (take lots of water) and came across Ombak Sunset.

The restaurants and bars were open however the rooms were just being finished.

We were welcomed in by the staff who were genuinely interested in our holiday. We stopped for a cold drink, stayed for lunch and returned with our swimmers and towels and stayed for the afternoon. The cocktails were amazing, we slowly worked our way through the list at the pool bar and finished the day with an amazing dinner on the beach at a specially made up table watching the sunset.

By this time in the holiday i'd had enough of indonesian food and opted for an eye fillet steak which was cooked to perfection.

The following day after going out diving we returned to the Sunset for a quiet dinner to enjoy our last night on the island. It was a bit to windy to sit out on the beach and we didnt want to sit in the usual dinning area so staff made us up a table near the pool area and brought out extra lights so we could see. The dim lighting was the perfect setting and after another amazing dinner we decided to have a desert. The selection was good but i just felt like an ordinary chocolate cake which was not on the menu however the waiter suggested the chef make me a single serve self saucing chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. It was amazing! Far from ordinary. Plus to top it all off my partner then proposed!

I would like to make a special mention of Ari, he served us in the pool bar and was so interesting to talk to. His family all lived in Lombok and he just had such an amazing attitude about life in general. I hope he gets to go diving one day and see nemo as he put it.

Amazing staff!!!

Room Tip: I can't comment on the rooms as we didnt stay here but would love to one day!

Everyone coming to Gili must stay here. The hotel is amazing and so are the staff. Drinks are not the best so suggest to bring your own bottles. Sunset is amazing and the rooms are spacious. You can hire bikes from the hotel for 5 used per day. Te hotel has the largest pool on the whole island. The hotel is slightly out of the main strip which makes it even better.

The staffs speaks very good English and friendly also. Me & my boyfriend stayed there for 4 days & 3 nights and we just loved it. We liked the overall view of the buildings there and, of course, the stunning sunset. We never missed any sunsets while we were there & the glittering view of night sky that we never found at the city.

But there's always the bad side in everything. The food at the resto & the beach resto was quite pricey and there's not much options for the menu. But all in all its the best experience for us so far.

A little tips for those who want to go to Gili Trawangan:
- Don't hand your suitcases or bags to anyone while you're in Bangsal or Trawangan harbour, unless you really need someone to carry it for you. Normally they will charge you 20-30 thousand rupiah for each porter.
- It's better to book the boat & transportation first before you go there, unless you're on a budget then just go with metered taxi (book at the airport) & public boat (25 thousand rupiah for each person & available until 3pm)

Room Tip: ask for free upgrade to the sunset bungalows

This is the perfect place to stay if you want to be aeay from crowds from the main strip. Reasonable price. Just a short horse ride (or 20min walk to the strip). The pool is very nice. We loved the outdoor bathroom concept. Staff all speak very good english and are super friendly. We were especially impressed by the way the way that the kitchen staff tailored to our egg specifications! Although i wouldnt recommend the grilled seafood buffet at night though. Good happy hour drinks.
