I travelled here with my precious friends (including a 5 year old boy) back in November. We had such an unforgettable time! We stayed in villa no.5 (3 bedroomed.) It certainly was a trip to remember... the establishment and surrounding areas, were unique! I celebrated my 30th birthday on the beach. I would like to mention the staff of Eco Villas here, because they (as well as having fabulous friends) made it an unforgettable birthday - one ill cherish forever!
They went to much planning and preparation for cocktails in the sun on the beach by the gazebo... and even went to the trouble of making a beautiful cake.
It ticked all the boxes for our holiday, is a little out of town, not too far and not too close. So it suited all our needs.
The staff were incredible, I want to say a huge "thank you" for making it so special and thank them also for their considerable support. Unfortunately, just before we were to check out, the night before, we had come back from the village and due to my lack of awareness managed to loose my wallet (outside of Eco Villas-coming back from town in horse and cart) the management of Eco Villas were above helpful in assisting me to find it, and manage bank card cancelling accordingly. Unfortunately this can happen anytime, anywhere in the world. But what made me so appreciative was the compassion and empathy displayed by all staff in the hunt to retrieve my wallet. They really were extremely helpful, I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for their support and want them to know, this did not alter my memories and stay at this truely fabulous home in the sun! These memories will forever be priceless, and i hope some day to return here, and meet them all again!

We booked a week here and had mixed feelings. The good points: the villas in themselves are clean, quiet and located far away enough from the tourist hubbub of the main port. Staff are very friendly and will do anything they can to make things more comfortable.

However, if you're considering booking eco villas because you are concerned about the sustainability and impact of your holidays then you may be disappointed. The island itself is pretty unsustainable - it has no fresh water or crops of its own. Everything is shipped over from Lombok. The island is a muslim island, with villagers living mostly in poverty. There's a real animosity between the tourists and the villagers. And I can see why. They island has been developed to be a tourist-trap. It's over developed, dirty, littered full of partying westerners with little sensitivity to the environmental or social impact of their actions. We visited the village to try and get a sense of the real island and no-one met our eye in stark contrast to how we were treated elsewhere in Bali and Lombok. The only interaction we got was 'Hey tourist, want to buy my kite?' which really encapsulates the dysfunctional relationship between tourists and villagers. All the staff come here from Bali or Lombok and live on site rather than employing islanders.

What does this have to do with Eco Villas? Well, it's hard to see how any villa or hotel here can really claim to be eco or have low impact. To get here you have to take a horse and cart - horses here are notorioulsy overworked and ill-treated and tend to die young. The villa has its own private beach - which for us isn't the right philosophy. The grounds have are mostly lawn - which is not sustainable in this climate. Frequently the grounds are 'fogged' with highly toxic chemicals to get rid of flies. Toxic mosquito coils are provided in the villas rather than looking for more natural ways of managing pests. Air con units are available in every bedroom. Food is not organic or locally sourced - and there were no guarantees on the source of meat or eggs. At breakfast the butter was from France and the honey from Canada, for example.

We enquired about cultural activities or ways to get involved with the local community but there was nothing available other than snorkelling.

For someone committed to sustainable travel it's really hard to see how staying at eco villas helps. The only plus side is I would say it seems better than the other options. However, the island is still in full scale 24/7 development and some of the local plots of land are being sold off by eco villas for new villas. Tourist life on the island is not sustainable and is only getting worse.

For that reason we were disappointed and would definitely not return. If you're looking for a more sustainable holiday there are better options on Bali and Lombok.

Room Tip: We choose a double story villa - it's at the back so further from the sea but much more private...

We spent one week in late Jan - early Feb at Eco Villas. The place is located nearby one of the most peaceful beaches on the island (you need a bike or a horse to go downtown). The villa was very nice with two bed rooms, very clean open air bathroom and a spacy living room / porch. Good snorkeling sites in paddling distance. Most of all the atmosphere at Eco Villas was very relaxed and the staff superfriendly in a genuine way which is rare nowadays. Tänne kannattaa tulla! K & M from Finland.

After a couple of days spent in the hustle and bustle of Bali, we were looking forward to some R&R on Gili T - this place did not disappoint. This side of the island is very peaceful and tranquil yet it's an easy walk/cycle/donkey ride to the main strip on the other side if you want a bit more action.
The villa was a lovely tropical island beach villa, and I loved the outdoor bathroom :-) The staff were wonderful - nothing was too much trouble and you are always greeted with a smile.
If you're looking for a place to recharge that supports Eco values and projects, then this is the place for you. You may however find it difficult to leave!

Having been to Gili T a few times, my boyfriend and I decided to stay at Gili Eco Villas. It was amazing - beautiful rooms, lovely service and incredibly relaxing.

It is a only short stroll away from the main strip and highly recommended for people who want a very quiet get away. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our getaway was memorable, even helping us light some fireworks on the beach away from the hotel on my birthday (shhh haha)

There is an amazing reef for snorkelling with turtles just out the front of the resort - we even saw a reef shark.

Room Tip: One recommendation - book a room with air con, particularly during the wet season as it can get VERY...

Stayed for 4 nights with 5 friends over New Years. Even though its the wet season we had plenty to sunshine and beautiful sunsets.
We had a brilliant time and loved our stay at Eco Villas.
The staff were excellent, always happy and smiling and nothing was too much trouble, they even joined in our volleyball game when we needed a few extra players!
They organized fishing and snorkeling trips (where we saw heaps of beautiful fish and turtles and stopped for lunch on Gili Air) and ferries and transfers etc. when leaving Gili T (getting boats to and from Bali and Lombok was easy).
The villa was gorgeous and was perfect for what we needed; comfy beds, nice bathrooms, decent AC units and fans, kitchen area and great sofas and comfy seating and a hammock to chill out and relax.
The enclosed outdoor showers are nice but the water pressure and temperature can be a bit random.
The food was OK and the chef did well to work with the limited produce on the island. The local dishes as expected were the best. The complimentary breakfast was good but the a la carte options were even better - the banana pancakes were delicious!!
There are lovely gardens which means you don't feel like you are too close to the other villas and the pool is great.
The snorkeling equipment and the bikes for hire are OK and do the job but could do with a bit of TLC & you can hire from elsewhere if you can be bothered.
The villas are a 20min walk or 10min horse and cart (IDR100,000 max at high season) from the main strip. Just take a beer for the journey.
The main stip has lots of bars, restaurants, spas and shops but can be a bit crazy so it was nice to party there and then go back to our tranquil villa.
All in all a great stay and a brilliant place to celebrate New Year's Eve.

We booked our stay at Echo villas because we are very keen on sustainable tourism and staying in places that respect the environment and provide work for locals. On paper it all looked perfect and we booked a stay for two travelling with an 2-month old infant. Unfortunately - at least that's what we thought at the time - a house was only available for 4 of our 6 nights on Gili and we had to book another hotel for the first 3 nights.
When we arrived, it became clear that the place was totally unsuitable for travel with a baby and barely suitable for adults. For one thing, there is no shade whatsoever and it was hard to get to the house given the scorching sun. The house was burning hot and built on two floors. Rooms were not communicating and each one had a separate lock. The bedroom was upstairs while the bathroom was downstairs and we worked out that it would be a struggle to go for a pee in the middle of the night.
In addition, there was no beach to speak of - contrary to the rest of the island which had beautiful transparent waters - and just rocks and debris spread at seafront.
After much thinking, we decided to leave and ended up losing 200usd of deposit we had paid. Our main complaint is that the owners should have been honest and told us that the place was not suitable for stay with an infant. However, our view is that it would have been barely acceptable for us alone.
