“a fortuitous choice”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

We came to this hotel after being so terribly disappointed by the place we'd reserved. Very luckily, Villa Grasia was nearby and they had a room available. The hotel was modern and very clean and it fit the setting very well; the pool area was well-kept and comfortable; the restaurant was lovely but the food was mediocre. The grounds were beautifully landscaped. The room came with complimentary bicycles. One of the best parts of our stay here at Villa Grasia was the staff, who were consistently warm and friendly and welcoming. In fact, it was my husband's birthday, and I left little notes in the room. The cleaning staff noticed them and when we returned to our room they all shook his hand and said happy birthday. The next time we passed the lobby, the staff had prepared a birthday presentation for him, and they surrounded us and sang to him, accompanied by a guitar. It was thoroughly charming.

Villa Grasia on Gili Terawangan is the worst hotel ever. They do not care about their customers. When the air conditioner leaked all over my heart medication causing me to spend part of my vacation going to a doctor and getting more meds at a huge cost and inconvenience they told me sorry no one here can make a decision. I had asked for a discount to help cover my cost but the boss was conveniently on a plane and could not be reached. No one…here but young kids running the place. There are feral cats with fleas sitting on the dining chairs and you have to kick them away to eat your dinner. They do not have wi-fi. There were spider webs and spiders all over the room and the water was dirty. The toilet was dirty as well. Do not waste your money on this place. It is also past the damage on the road causing a very uncomfortable ride through the jungle over tree roots in a horse cart. Do not stay here.

All in context - there don't appear to be very many truly nice places to stay on Gili T:

The good:

- Big rooms with A/C (for the most part) and indoor, fresh water showers

- Fresh water pool, beachfront that *sort of* allows you to swim (but much better if you have water socks or something similar)

- Free breakfast that appears to be pretty generous

- Free usage of bikes and snorkel gear - although the gear was pretty run down

The bad:

- A/C unit in our room doesn't really reach the whole room - the unit is too small for the room size. There is also no A/C in the bathroom, which is weird. Finally, there was some mold on the wall that we believed was a result of the bathroom/A/C combination. This should be pretty easy to clean with some bleach, but it would have to be maintained. If we had been staying for more than 2 days we would have forced the issue.

- Service is really terrible. Very hard to make ourselves understood with all but one of the staff - a young guy who appears to be a very capable polyglot. Slow restaurant.

- The beach chairs are very uncomfortable, and the beachfront is not well maintained. Lots of cigarette butts and garbage in the area. The hotel appears to be frequented by Russians, which equals LOTS of smoking - and no one is picking up after them.

- The location is pretty inconvenient. You are a 30 minute walk from the town center, which isn't bad - except that a quarter of that (in distance, not time) is a sand-covered road. You would think they would invest in the road so that people can travel easily via bike.

What I liked about this place:
1. The beach beside the hotel. It is at your doorstep and provides great snorkelling.

2. Free use of snorkelling gear.
3. The staff are lovely and very helpful and friendly.
4. The room was very nice and the bed comfortable.
5. Great Long Island iced tea and two for one 5-7.
6. Free afternoon tea 4-5 daily.
7. Pleasant pool area.
8. Great spot for sunset cocktails- just take them onto the beach and enjoy!

Things that one may not be so keen on:

1. You have to be prepared to walk 30 mins to where the main 'town' is. This was not an issue for me as I appreciated the chance for exercise. Free bikes are available though I didn't attempt this as the 'road' is very sandy in places.
2. The noise from the a/c in adjacent room was a bit irritating at night- though I had ear plugs and was fine.

All in all, a very good option on Gili T. I would certainly stay there again.

This was a great place to stay - we really enjoyed our time here. The location is great as it is away from the busy strip, which is only a short bike ride away.

The room was nice and the staff were great - especially Harry.

The gardens are nice and it is great that bikes are included with the room - we used them every day. The roads are not as bad as a lot of people have made out. We only needed to push our bikes through sand for a very small portion of our journeys.

We went snorkelling out the front of the hotel and ended up swimming with a turtle. There are lots of beautiful fish and corals. It was great that the hotel has free snorkelling gear available. There is quite a bit of washed up coral in the shallow waters, but the hotel provides sand shoes. We rode to The Beach Club each day which is excellent for swimming and relaxing on the beach.

Our only negative was that the shower pressure was very inconsistent.

We stayed here for three nights and were pleased with our choice. The staff were really helpful especially Ronnie and Andy, and it was easy to arrange things through the hotel reception. Breakfast was simple but nice, with plenty of fresh fruit, toast and local food. They also did eggs to order - but I got hooked on the pancakes.
The rooms didn't have much character, but they were really big with plenty of fresh towels and were clean. The bed was also huge! The pool area was a really nice place to hang out especially as the ocean was really rough while we were there.
Bikes were included in the room price, which was really handy as it is about a 15 minute cycle ride into town. On this end of the island the road hasn't been finished and so we needed to push our bikes through a bit of sand before rejoining the road. This said, it was nothing major and there are some great little huts overlooking the ocean where you can stop and refresh with a Bintang before continuing.
My husband, the animal lover, made good friends with the two resident cats who were happy to entertain especially if enticed with a little bit of bacon.
Tip - take a torch as it can be a bit dark walking back at night.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very similar and are either side of one long path. I don't think there would b...

We stayed here for two nights. The island is famous for scuba diving and snorkeling. The cottage was nice and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is a bit far from the main market but they provide cycles free of charge which was useful. The swimming pool could have been better.
