Well first off I would like to say that the people of Gili Meno that we met were very friendly if not a bit shy still as Gili meno is still the least developed of the 3 popular Gilis and I enjoyed their friendly inquisitive natures. Gili Meno is small and easy to walk around and in places the water is quite deep for strong swimming but always be aware that these are coral islands and it is a great idea to buy reef shoes for swimming anywhere in the Gilis.
Now for Shack 59. I'm sorry to say that it did not live up to all the hype that I read in tripadvisor I suppose I was expecting a little bit of luxury in Robinson Crusoe surroundings but it just wasn't. I thought it would be directly behind Shack 58 but there is a little footy field in between and this meant you could not see the water unless you walked back to the front and sat in the gazebo the daybed was comfortable but the table and benches in the front were not I just felt that Shack 59 really was the poor cousin of Shack 58 their gazebo was not only twice the size but they had more then their fair share of comfortable chairs in which to sit and admire the water as both places are meant for 2 a couple of comfy chairs in both gazebos would have went a long way. The shack itself was very large but really dark and if you wanted to keep it cool you couldn't open the shutters so lighting had to be used all day. Although it was advertised it had hot water we never got any hot water no matter what we tried I wouldn't have cared but the fact is these Shacks are not cheap by Gili Meno standards just on A$70 a day for 59 and surrounded by other accommodation ranging around A$15-30 yes they aren't as big and they share the land but I was never going to be there long enough to grow vegetables so land size didn't matter and neither did sitting in a dark room hold any attraction.
There has been some very strong storms in the earlier part of the year and the beach outside Shack 58 has been very badly eroded Paul the next door neighbour a man from Darwin has put a retaining wall in the try to sure up the beach and in fairness he told us Callie will be putting in one soon but I only booked just before coming to Lombok and was not told that most of the beach as pictured in their site is now gone and for that matter most of the view from Shack 58 is now obstructed by Pauls Last Resort a budget backpacker accom.
Overall I think that Shack 58/59 offers plenty of space for those who need it but you do pay a premium for it. The staff are friendly but very inexperienced and lack guidance by the owner I have just left another Villa in southern Lombok called Sempiak Villas where the smaller Villa is a similar price to Shack 59 and not only is there no comparison to the standard of appointments in the Villa the service by local villagers who were completely untrained just 12mths ago runs rings around Shack 58/59. The view of and unspoilt beach where we were the only 2 was a very refreshing surprise also after not being able to see the sea from 59.
I am sorry Callie that I couldn't give the glowing reports that others give but after just leaving Jeeva Klui also perfect and going to Sempiak Villas there just isn't any comparison.
