“Rock the boat”
Reviewed April 8, 2012

Well first off I would like to say that the people of Gili Meno that we met were very friendly if not a bit shy still as Gili meno is still the least developed of the 3 popular Gilis and I enjoyed their friendly inquisitive natures. Gili Meno is small and easy to walk around and in places the water is quite deep for strong swimming but always be aware that these are coral islands and it is a great idea to buy reef shoes for swimming anywhere in the Gilis.

Now for Shack 59. I'm sorry to say that it did not live up to all the hype that I read in tripadvisor I suppose I was expecting a little bit of luxury in Robinson Crusoe surroundings but it just wasn't. I thought it would be directly behind Shack 58 but there is a little footy field in between and this meant you could not see the water unless you walked back to the front and sat in the gazebo the daybed was comfortable but the table and benches in the front were not I just felt that Shack 59 really was the poor cousin of Shack 58 their gazebo was not only twice the size but they had more then their fair share of comfortable chairs in which to sit and admire the water as both places are meant for 2 a couple of comfy chairs in both gazebos would have went a long way. The shack itself was very large but really dark and if you wanted to keep it cool you couldn't open the shutters so lighting had to be used all day. Although it was advertised it had hot water we never got any hot water no matter what we tried I wouldn't have cared but the fact is these Shacks are not cheap by Gili Meno standards just on A$70 a day for 59 and surrounded by other accommodation ranging around A$15-30 yes they aren't as big and they share the land but I was never going to be there long enough to grow vegetables so land size didn't matter and neither did sitting in a dark room hold any attraction.

There has been some very strong storms in the earlier part of the year and the beach outside Shack 58 has been very badly eroded Paul the next door neighbour a man from Darwin has put a retaining wall in the try to sure up the beach and in fairness he told us Callie will be putting in one soon but I only booked just before coming to Lombok and was not told that most of the beach as pictured in their site is now gone and for that matter most of the view from Shack 58 is now obstructed by Pauls Last Resort a budget backpacker accom.

Overall I think that Shack 58/59 offers plenty of space for those who need it but you do pay a premium for it. The staff are friendly but very inexperienced and lack guidance by the owner I have just left another Villa in southern Lombok called Sempiak Villas where the smaller Villa is a similar price to Shack 59 and not only is there no comparison to the standard of appointments in the Villa the service by local villagers who were completely untrained just 12mths ago runs rings around Shack 58/59. The view of and unspoilt beach where we were the only 2 was a very refreshing surprise also after not being able to see the sea from 59.

I am sorry Callie that I couldn't give the glowing reports that others give but after just leaving Jeeva Klui also perfect and going to Sempiak Villas there just isn't any comparison.

Room Tip: Only stay in 58 as 59 is sure to disappoint

We were lucky enough to spend six nights at Shack 58 on Gili Meno. It is absolutely the most perfect place to stay. Shack 58 is extremely well cared for and is very clean and comfortable. The gazebo is huge and this is where you will have a beautiful breakfast every morning (the indonesian pancakes are fantastic) and you can choose to sleep out on the queen size bed if you wish! With our own baruga on the beach and the most amazing outlook, Shack 58 is the most wonderful place to completely relax. We cannot say enough about the staff of Shack 58. They are lovely people who look after you like family and are always smiling. We already miss Gili Meno, Shack 58 and especially the people and hope we return very, very soon!

Room Tip: Please visit the little cafe next door to Shack 58 (Ryan's cafe) which serves the best spring ro...

Perfect location for Rest and relaxation - fantastic service and very friendly staff - loved our stay in the beautiful beach shack.
One comment abouth the gili islands generally - check out the well being of the horse if using this type of transport - seem to be in good condition in gili Meno but our day trip to gili trawangan saw a decline in animal care. Some in very poor condition carrying very heavy loads of produce - bleeding sores from harness frothing at mouth, ribs showing - locals need education in care of animals.

talk about a perfect place to relax and be spoiled without ever leaving your home away from home. Shack 58 and 59 are magical places. We stayed for 5 nights and were treated so well by the staff that we never found another place that lived up to the shack experience. From coffee on the beach in the morning, watching the sun come up over Lombok and checking out the starfish in the shallow crystal clear water to fresh fish cooked over an open fire on the beach with coconut shells served with love in the cabana...it was a dream vacation.

Room Tip: Both shacks are great. Shack 58 has a much larger cabana with a refrigerator and a bathroom close by...

My husband and I stayed in Shack 59 for part of our honeymoon in December 2011 and we couldn't have asked for a better place to relax and unwind. Shack 59 is set back about 100 metres from the beach, it is a large 'shack' (with all the mod cons, its hardly a shack) and with the addition of your own private day bungalow right on the beach with day bed, table and chairs - it really was an amazing holiday location.

Hire a snorkle and fins directly from Shack 59 for about $3 per day and you swim out about 30 metres into the clearest water I have ever seen to a reef filled with colourful marine life. We also organised to go out a little further in a fishing boat (also organised by the shack) and it was so amazing, we saw turtles, with one being very curious by coming up to the surface to check us out. Awesome!

The service was impeccable. Callie and Hengke were so prompt with emails prior and organised our transfers to and from the island and were so accomodating when we arrived.

There are no cars or motorbikes on this small island. So if you are looking for a true island escape - this is one place not to miss

Room Tip: Both Shack 58 and 59 are fantastic and both offer a private day bungalow. We preferred Shack 59 as...

Much has been said about Shack 58 and I can only agree with all the positive reviews. We stayed at Shack 58 for 3 nights and then moved to Shack 59 for our last night. It is surely the best place to stay on Gili Meno.
Hengki also organized our blue water express tickets from Padangbai and back to Benoa. He organized pick up from Ubud as well. Everything for a promotional price - non of the other passengers paid as less (1,000,000 Rupia return ticket). We didn't have to pay it in advance, but only upon our arrival in Shack 58.
Shack 58 was just amazing - from the second night on, we slept in the gazebo, which was an amazing experience. Another plus was the Beach-Gazebo where we spent most of our day. We were sad to leave Shack 58 for Shack 59. Don't understand me wrong. Shack 59 is beautiful as well - but if available I would go for Shack 58 - it is worth every extra pence. The main difference is, that Shack 59 doesn't have a beach gazebo...I missed that a bit.
Hengki and his team were great. On one evening we wanted to have fish and informed them the day before. They excused themselves, that they only have caught Barracuda....Barracuda is just delicious!!!!
Hengki also organized a morning out snorkeling. This was a real bargain, as it was only 120,000 for 3 hours out! the guy who accompanied us with his boat showed us the most important places. We even saw a big turtle. He was great!
Hengki offered, that he organized our trip back to Gili T on our day of departure (without passing through Meno Harbour). The cost was ridiculous (125,000) and it was great being picked up by the boat just in front of Shack 58.
We also saw many people passing by to ask if it was still available - but at the time of our stay the were fully booked until December. So you really have to book in advance!!!
Many nice restaurants near by as Ana's and Ryan's bar with fabulous jices and coconut patties - just delicious.

One note, that I would have loved ot know before going to Gili Meno: the water is very shallow all over Gili Meno. The only place were the water gets a bit deeper is in the harbour area. The beach is beautiful in front of Shack 58 but don't think of having a swim - it is more like a pool.
if one day I happen to be back in Gili M. I will try to get accomodation at Shack 58!!!

stayed in shack 59 for 2 nights, wish we'd have stayed for 12. Callie was so helpful when booking this place and all the staff were friendly and helpful and made our stay so memorable. We had the house at the back just down a litle path from the beach (54euro per night - absolutley fantastic value). There was an outside bathroom (bit scary in the middle of the night!), big bedroom, light and airy, comfy bed, fridge, tv etc.Breakfast served overlooking beach whenever youre ready. Hired snorkeling masks/fins rfom owners - v cheap and excellent quality. Took a walk round island took about 70 mins.

Hardly saw anyone else during our 48 hours on meno! It was so relaxing and i would highly recommend this island if you want to chill on a beautiful beach and do little else. There is very little round shack 58/59 but we ate at a new place 5 min walk away called alang alang - highly recommended. This island is quiet but we actually preferred it to Gili T.

Gili M has AMAZING sunsets that i will never forget.

Thank you so much to everyone at shack 58/59 for making our holiday so special, I am so in love with this place and would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: dont be disappointed if you cant get into shack 58 (front property) because shack 59 is amazing

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
ALL BOOKINGS VIA REQUEST WE DO NOT USE BOOKING OR AGODA Escape to 2 simple getaway cottages on NE side of Gili Meno Island. These cottages are deliberately simple in design so one can relax and disengage from the stresses of modern life. This place was built with the idea of relaxing in a simple environment but with a few luxuries. If you are wanting "lights camera action" type holiday this is not for you. We rely on the island generator for power and embrace the simple life - if you going to get upset if the power goes out or water isn't delivered timeously due to bad weather or low tides over reef a remote island with no infrastructure is definitely not your gig. If you need a little simplicity and a pure island experience you will enjoy visiting us. Shack58 is situated on a beachfront property and Shack59 is on a separate property about 100m from the beach, but it does have its own large daytime gazebo with bed and table and chairs and private bathroom where guests are invited to relax and enjoy the view. All meals are served on the beach gazebos. ... more   less
