Shack 58 & 59
Reviewed December 18, 2011

My husband and I stayed in Shack 59 for part of our honeymoon in December 2011 and we couldn't have asked for a better place to relax and unwind. Shack 59 is set back about 100 metres from the beach, it is a large 'shack' (with all the mod cons, its hardly a shack) and with the addition of your own private day bungalow right on the beach with day bed, table and chairs - it really was an amazing holiday location.

Hire a snorkle and fins directly from Shack 59 for about $3 per day and you swim out about 30 metres into the clearest water I have ever seen to a reef filled with colourful marine life. We also organised to go out a little further in a fishing boat (also organised by the shack) and it was so amazing, we saw turtles, with one being very curious by coming up to the surface to check us out. Awesome!

The service was impeccable. Callie and Hengke were so prompt with emails prior and organised our transfers to and from the island and were so accomodating when we arrived.

There are no cars or motorbikes on this small island. So if you are looking for a true island escape - this is one place not to miss

Room Tip: Both Shack 58 and 59 are fantastic and both offer a private day bungalow. We preferred Shack 59 as...

Much has been said about Shack 58 and I can only agree with all the positive reviews. We stayed at Shack 58 for 3 nights and then moved to Shack 59 for our last night. It is surely the best place to stay on Gili Meno.
Hengki also organized our blue water express tickets from Padangbai and back to Benoa. He organized pick up from Ubud as well. Everything for a promotional price - non of the other passengers paid as less (1,000,000 Rupia return ticket). We didn't have to pay it in advance, but only upon our arrival in Shack 58.
Shack 58 was just amazing - from the second night on, we slept in the gazebo, which was an amazing experience. Another plus was the Beach-Gazebo where we spent most of our day. We were sad to leave Shack 58 for Shack 59. Don't understand me wrong. Shack 59 is beautiful as well - but if available I would go for Shack 58 - it is worth every extra pence. The main difference is, that Shack 59 doesn't have a beach gazebo...I missed that a bit.
Hengki and his team were great. On one evening we wanted to have fish and informed them the day before. They excused themselves, that they only have caught Barracuda....Barracuda is just delicious!!!!
Hengki also organized a morning out snorkeling. This was a real bargain, as it was only 120,000 for 3 hours out! the guy who accompanied us with his boat showed us the most important places. We even saw a big turtle. He was great!
Hengki offered, that he organized our trip back to Gili T on our day of departure (without passing through Meno Harbour). The cost was ridiculous (125,000) and it was great being picked up by the boat just in front of Shack 58.
We also saw many people passing by to ask if it was still available - but at the time of our stay the were fully booked until December. So you really have to book in advance!!!
Many nice restaurants near by as Ana's and Ryan's bar with fabulous jices and coconut patties - just delicious.

One note, that I would have loved ot know before going to Gili Meno: the water is very shallow all over Gili Meno. The only place were the water gets a bit deeper is in the harbour area. The beach is beautiful in front of Shack 58 but don't think of having a swim - it is more like a pool.
if one day I happen to be back in Gili M. I will try to get accomodation at Shack 58!!!

stayed in shack 59 for 2 nights, wish we'd have stayed for 12. Callie was so helpful when booking this place and all the staff were friendly and helpful and made our stay so memorable. We had the house at the back just down a litle path from the beach (54euro per night - absolutley fantastic value). There was an outside bathroom (bit scary in the middle of the night!), big bedroom, light and airy, comfy bed, fridge, tv etc.Breakfast served overlooking beach whenever youre ready. Hired snorkeling masks/fins rfom owners - v cheap and excellent quality. Took a walk round island took about 70 mins.

Hardly saw anyone else during our 48 hours on meno! It was so relaxing and i would highly recommend this island if you want to chill on a beautiful beach and do little else. There is very little round shack 58/59 but we ate at a new place 5 min walk away called alang alang - highly recommended. This island is quiet but we actually preferred it to Gili T.

Gili M has AMAZING sunsets that i will never forget.

Thank you so much to everyone at shack 58/59 for making our holiday so special, I am so in love with this place and would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: dont be disappointed if you cant get into shack 58 (front property) because shack 59 is amazing

A walk around the island will tell you that this is the best place to stay. But a passing glance is only half the story.

Book here and you won't be disappointed because not only is the accommodation first class, the friendly staff are equally impressive.

We enjoyed our time at Shack 58 and it was so sad to leave.

Room Tip: Book early - there's only 1 shack 58

Shack 58 (and 59) are probably the finest two places to stay on Gili Meno. We had the privilege of staying on the island for a week, for which four of those nights were at Shack 58. Even though it was quite some time ago , I felt obliged to eventually write this review, to let others know about the place. Selfishly, I thought I would try to keep it a well-guarded secret, so that we could (vainly) try to keep the place for ourselves. But a place of this quality deserves publicity - just make sure to book well in advance, because I'm sure there are a string of people eagerly waiting to stay there.

What I liked most about Shack 58 was the sense of seclusion and privacy. It often seemed - when staying here - that we had the entire island to ourselves. A stones throw from the ocean was our own private lapa - a covered structure with loungers and an ever-present cool sea breeze. Lunch, dinner, and even breakfast could be taken right here at the waterside, and we were very pleased at the quality of the dishes prepared by the wonderful staff.

The cottage itself is tastefully decorated, and comes with all the amenities you could need. The outside shower and bathroom was a nice touch too.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough, even though I initially wanted to keep it as secret as possible. Everyone deserves to stay here at least once.

Room Tip: Shack 58 is closer to the beach, and is more expensive, but Shack 59 is equally nice, at a reduced p...

A perfect experience at Shack58 at Gili Meno. It deservedly gets wonderful reviews that I read in detail and felt confident to book and was so glad I did, it's got to be the best place to stay on Meno. It was a little piece of luxury on an island that has few modern facilities, which was what appealing to us. Hengki and his family looked after our every need, from keeping everything spotless, making delicious food, topping up our fridge to arranging a snorkelling trip. He checked out our airport transfers by boat and taxi and helped us with a day trip to Bali. The wonder of a Blackberry and fantastic hospitality.

We were amazed at how everything ran like clockwork with attentive, personal service - I doubt you'd get this kind of attention in the UK even with every available facility to hand. This is what made Shack 58 - the people. Indeed Gili Meno was about the wonderful Indonesians and their hospitality, what happy friendly people they are.
After a day away, we were welcomed "home" by Hengki at the jetty and then by his family back at the Shack who were waiting our arrival at 8pm to cook for us.
They provided a Simple Menu, which was perfectly cooked and served so nicely, three times a day if we wanted. One night we asked for fish and it was duly caught next day and BBQd for us on the beach, it doesn't get fresher or tastier than that.
The room was spacious, clean and comfy. It had a large bed and a small couch, a safe, tasteful furnished with lots of windows with shutters and mosquito mesh. (no mosquitos). The bathroom was airy, and fun to use. Flowers were left each day and we had 2 showers, a salt and fresh one. Towels were provided (as were beach ones).
They asked daily if we would like our room cleaned, or towels changed. The family were discreet - once they had attended to our needs, they went off home to their village.

The only thing that disturbed our sleep was the cockeral who cock-a-doodle-dood each morning, but we got used to him and didn't mind. The eggs the hens laid were fantastic!
The big gazebo was a huge bonus - we felt like royalty with our furnishings and pleasant paving/flowers overlooking the beach. Lots of people would walk past en route round the island and would always sneak an envious look - in fact a couple walked up our path thinking it was a restaurant! We sat there with our food and drinks (own fridge topped up by Hengki daily), enjoying a read in the shade or dinner when the sun had gone down. We took in the sunsets, the shimmering turqoise sea and the ponies and carts trotting past. No cars, delightful!

Ideal also, was our own little gazebo on the beach itself, with cushions. Ideal for sunbathing or shade when the sun moved round.
We stayed for a week and even that wasn't long enough. We were able to relax in an oasis of a place on an island that was really rather ramshackle - but that's what we loved. Forget the touristy stuff, this was seeing how the locals lived, a chance to meet them and to be at the receiving end of their hospitality. We escaped from the ridiculous buzz of our working life in the UK, and were treated like Kings on this Robinson Crusoe island.
Delightful temperature with a breeze. We had fans in the gazebo and air con in the room - but we only put it on a couple of hours before going to bed as we were conscious that electricity was provided by a generator.

Don't hesitate to book, it was a first class experience.

Shack 58 and 59 are easily the best places to stay on the island. You are very well looked after by Hengki and everyone. The food is fabulous and they cater to every whim. Hengki organised our ferry to Gilli T and back, a boat for our snorkelling, our snorkel themselves, and when we needed an extra nights accomodation but the Shack was booked - he found us somewhere else to stay!

Having stayed in the Sunshine Gecko - it confirmed that the Shacks really were the best. Nowhere else provided such good food or such charming service. Even though Shack 59 is not on the beacj - it has its own little hut/shaded room right by the beach - where you can east/sleep/laze/read.

It is a tranquil and beautiful place to stay. Amazing snorkelling, amazing sunsets and an amazing place to stay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Escape to 2 simple getaway cottages on NE side of Gili Meno Island. These cottages are deliberately simple in design so one can relax and disengage from the stresses of modern life. This place was built with the idea of relaxing in a simple environment but with a few luxuries. If you are wanting "lights camera action" type holiday this is not for you. We rely on the island generator for power and embrace the simple life - if you going to get upset if the power goes out or water isn't delivered timeously due to bad weather or low tides over reef a remote island with no infrastructure is definitely not your gig. If you need simplicity and a pure island experience you will enjoy visiting us. 58 & Bamboo H are both beachfront properties, Shack59 is on a separate property about 100m from the beach, but it does have its own large daytime gazebo with bed and table and chairs and private bathroom where guests are invited to relax and enjoy the view. All meals are served on the beach gazebos. ... more   less
